RUSSIA PLEDGES TO HELP DEVELOP GREATER MEKONG SUB REGION

Ha Noi, Oct. 15 (VNA) -- Russia and ASEAN on Oct. 14 agreed to
intensify cooperation in developing the Greater Mekong Sub Region
(GMS) with special focus on improving economic and social conditions
among countries located along the so-called East-Weast Corridor.

The consensus was reached in the second ASEAN-Russia meeting at the
deputy foreign ministerial level held in Ho Chi Minh City on Oct.
13-14.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Tam Chien of Viet
Nam, which acts as coordinator for ASEAN-Russia dialogue, and Russia's
Deputy Foreign Minister G.K, Karasin, agreed that both sides had the
potential to develop GMS co-operation.

GMS development had been given priority in the Ha Noi Plan of Action
adopted at the Sixth ASEAN Summit held in Ha Noi in December 1998.

The two sides frankly exchanged notes on regional and international
issues of mutual concern, with Russia fully supporting ASEAN's efforts
to maintain a region of peace and stability.

Russia said it would be ready to join the Treaty of Amity and
Cooperation and the Treaty of Southeast Asian Nuclear Weapon Free Zone
(SEANWFZ) as soon as procedures were completed, and pledged to make
greater contributions to the ASEAN Regional Forum.

The ASEAN-Russia dialogue ties were fully established in July 1997 when
Viet Nam became official ASEAN coordinator for Russia.--VNA
