Xinhua: FM Spokeswoman Condemns "Taiwan Security Enhancement Act"

U.S. Charges Against China's Dealing with Falun Gong Slammed

BEIJING, October 28 (Xinhua) -- China today expressed strong resentment
over U.S. charges against China's dealing with the Falun Gong cult.
Commenting on U.S. Department of State spokesman James Rubin's remarks
on the matter on October 27, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue
said that Rubin has made gratuitous charges against the Chinese
government's settlement of the Falun Gong issue by distorting facts, and
the Chinese side expressed strong resentment over that. It must be
pointed out, Zhang said, that China is a country ruled according to law,
and China's laws not only protect the freedoms of association, speech,
assembly and religious belief of its citizens, but also brook no abuses
of these freedoms by anyone. Facts have shown that the Falun Gong cult
harms the physical and mental health of the people, and undermines
normal public order, Zhang said, adding that it is an anti-science,
anti- humanity and anti-society cult.
"No responsible government will ever allow cults to
harm the people's safety, or undermine public order and social
stability," the spokeswoman said, adding that accommodation of cults is
in itself trampling on the basic human rights of ent settles the Falun
Gong issue according to laws, and by doing so it is protecting the basic
human rights and the freedoms of citizens and safeguarding China's
Constitution and laws, Zhang said.
"What the Chinese government has done has won firm
support from the entire Chinese people," she said, adding that in this
issue the Chinese government firmly opposes any irresponsible remarks on
and interference in China's internal affairs. Enditem

FM Spokeswoman Condemns "Taiwan Security Enhancement Act"

BEIJING, October 28 (Xinhua)-- The revised version of "the Taiwan
Security Enhancement Act" passed by a U.S. House Committee is a gross
infringement on Chinese sovereignty, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman
Zhang Qiyue at today's press conference. The act, passed by the
International Relations Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives,
seriously violates the three Sino-U. S. Joint Communiques and
interferes in China's internal affairs, said Zhang, venting China's
strong indignation at and firm opposition to it. It needs to be pointed
out, she said, that efforts by a small group of U.S. congressmen to get
the act passed was actually an attempt to provide a "legal basis" for
strengthening U.S. high- tech arms shipment to Taiwan, and for
expanding the direct liaison between the two militaries, thus
obstructing the cause of reunification of the Chinese people. This
action poses a severe threat to peace of the Taiwan Straits and even the
Asia-Pacific Region, said Zhang. According to Zhang, the Chinese
government and people have expressed their vehement condemnation and
resolute opposition to the act from the very beginning, and have
repeatedly lodged solemn representations to the U.S. side. China has
noted that the United States government opposes passage of the act, she
said. China strongly demands that the U.S. congressmen terminate their
erroneous acts of interfering in China's internal affairs by making use
of the Taiwan issue, and that the U.S. government strictly abide by the
three Sino-U.S. Joint Communiques, honor its commitments, be fully
aware of the serious harm of the act, and take effective measures to
stop it from becoming law to ensure that no serious harm befalls the
Sino-U.S. relationship, the spokeswoman said. Enditem
