Storyline

The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam, has a life filled with both culinary delights and profound loss. Drifting through Europe after fleeing political violence in India that killed the family restaurant business and their mother, the Kadams arrive in France. Once there, a chance auto accident and the kindness of a young woman, Marguerite, in the village of Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val inspires Papa Kadam to set up a Indian restaurant there. Unfortunately, this puts the Kadams in direct competition with the snobbish Madame Mallory's acclaimed haute cuisine establishment across the street where Marguerite also works as a sous-chef. The resulting rivalry eventually escalates in personal intensity until it goes too far. In response, there is a bridging of sides initiated by Hassan, Marguerite and Madame Mallory herself, both professional and personal, that encourages an understanding that will change both sides forever. Quotes

Papa: She thinks she owns everybody in town. Do you hear me up there? I say no! Don't try to steal my children!
Madame Mallory: I will report you, Mr. Kadam, for making too much noise.
Papa: And I will report you for attempted child abduction!
Madame Mallory: Have you even asked the boy what he wants?
Papa: You deliberately seduced him!
Madame Mallory: [Scoffs]
Papa: You seduced his mind, with your awful, tasteless, empty sauces! With your pitiful little squashed bits of garlic!
Madame Mallory: That is called subtlety of flavor.
Papa: It's called meanness of spirit! If you have a spice, ...

A wonderful movie with a wonderful message.
10 August 2014 | by (USA) – See all my reviews

When this movie was announced, I was honestly just going to watch because of Om Puri. However, the plot of the movie is so well written, Om Puri was just a extra bonus. This movie has humor that just comes out naturally, but it also shows lots of emotions. This movie hit me home and I am pretty sure it will hit home to others as well. The casting is very well picked and I really enjoyed this film with my family. It is one of those movies you can watch with your family, and just relax and enjoy. There were some plot holes and other things you might find odd, but the whole movie as a whole was well made. A R Rahman also never disappoints with the movie score.

Verdict: Well Written, Well Made, Enjoyable film. For foodies and the families of anyone.
