Storyline

Romantic comedy about six of Seattle's young people, most of whom live in the same apartment building and whose lives revolve around the city's ever-expanding music scene. The inter-related stories about each character's progress through the singles scene are intriguing and often very funny, and the soundtrack is a grunge fanatic's dream, with the likes of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Mudhoney. Trivia

In an early scene at the coffee shop, Janet Livermore looks over a somewhat bizarre-looking customer's shoulder at a book that she is reading. Although the title is obscured, the book is "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung," a collection of pieces by the rock journalist Lester Bangs. Bangs was an inspiration and mentor for Cameron Crowe, as depicted in Almost Famous (2000), in which Bangs is played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and advises the fictionalized version of the young Crowe. Quotes

Club Interviewer: Talking here with Cliff Poncier. Cliff, any comments on the "Seattle Sound" and Citizen Dick's place in it?
Cliff Poncier: Well, I don't like to reduce us to just being part of the "Seattle Sound." I'd like to think of us as expanding more. Like, we're huge in Europe right now. I mean, we've got records... uh, a big record just broke in Belgium.
Club Interviewer: Now, a song like "Touch Me, I'm Dick" is about... what?
Cliff Poncier: Well, I think "Touch Me, I'm Dick," in essence, speaks for itself, you know. I think that, you know, that's ...

Smart dialogue, believable characters
8 April 2000 | by (Melbourne, Australia) – See all my reviews

What I liked most about Singles was that many of the characters you could identify with. Its not often in a film where you can look at characters and think - I know someone like that. Its actually very accurate in the way it depicts the attitudes of twenty somethings who have been through a series of less than successful relationships. There are some great, and very funny scenes in this film, and the actors all put in great performances. Setting it in Seattle- the home of the Grunge band was a fantastic idea as well.
