Storyline

Doc McCoy has been granted parole. The catch is that Sheriff Beynon expects a small favor from McCoy for his generosity: robbing another bank! Beynon does not really intend to let McCoy walk away after the heist and neither does co-robber Rudy Butler, but stopping Doc proves a trifle difficult. Written by Stefan Kahrs <smk@dcs.ed.ac.uk>

Trivia

According to "The Garner Files", Luis Delgado was working as Steve McQueen's stand-in. Luis' wife bought him a custom van, built by Tony Nancy, for his birthday. James Garner volunteered to drive the van from Los Angeles to San Antonio to surprise Luis. While on the set of The Getaway, Jim drove an orange VW Beetle in the robbery scene. When Jim asked the director, Sam Peckinpah, to be paid for the car stunt, Sam asked "How much do you want?". Jim said "Just give me what you think it's worth." Sam reached in his pocket pulled out $1. Jim later said he had so much fun doing the stunt, he would have paid Sam. See more »

Well-Crafted Heist Flick!
10 August 2004 | by (sparks, nevada) – See all my reviews

Not one of S. Peckinpah's masterworks but one hell of a crime thriller. Steve McQueen is perfect as the cool, professional Doc and although Ali MacGraw (Steve's next wife) is breezily gorgeous she doesn't have the chops to make her character (Carol) too believable. Al Lettieri is creepier than he was in THE GODFATHER and Richard Bright (THE GODFATHER as well) has a nice bit as a small-timer. Ben Johnson has credibility as does Dub Taylor later. Throw in authentic Western icon Slim Pickens and you have a nice Southwest crime drama.

A 7 out of 10. Best performance = Steve McQueen. He's very good with weapons and cars as he earlier proved. THE WILD BUNCH and STRAW DOGS are Peckinpah's masterpieces, but this is well worth a trip to the movies! Junior Bonner (a totally different type of sensibility) is also a fine film.
