Photos from Kent's Trip to Cozumel, Jan. 20-27, 1999

Cozumel

I stayed in a hotel on the island of Cozumel, about 2 miles south of the main town of San Miguel. The hotel was right across the street from the beach.

The pier by my hotel

This is the pier across the street from my hotel. On the right is one of the dive operator shops.

Underwater

I spent four days of the trip snorkeling and diving. The diving was just incredible -- visibility up to 100 feet, and a fantastic variety of marine life. Unfortunately, my underwater photos didn't turn out too well.

Sponges

I included this picture mainly because it turned out about the best of the underwater photos I took. The main things in the picture are various kinds of sponges.

Blue fish

This is also one of the better photos. I'm not sure what kind of fish it is, maybe some kind of angel fish.

Parrot fish

This is a parrot fish. Unfortunately, the photo didn't turn out too well.

Ray

I really wish this one had turned out better. It's a picture of a small sting ray sitting on the bottom (the ray is the roundish blob in the middle). It wasn't all that easy to see even in real life, because it was pretty darn well camoflaged.

Angel fish

Well, I obviously didn't take these photos. I did see fish like this; the postcard is much better than any of my underwater photos.

Chichen Itza

On my last full day in Mexico, I took a bus trip to the Mayan sacred city of Chichen Itza.

Mayan kids

On the way to Chichen Itza we stopped in a little village of Mayan people. Here are some of the kids from the village. Supposedly, life in these villages is much like it was centuries ago (except that they have refrigerators!).

The main pyramid in Chichen Itza.

This is the main pyramid in Chichen Itza.

The jungle seen from the top of the pyramid.

Here's a view from the top of the main pyramid, looking out over the jungle and some of the other ruins.

Looking down from the top of the pyramid.

Looking down the main stairway from the top of the main pyramid at Chichen Itza. It's not really quite as steep as it looks here, but you sure wouldn't want to fall...
