Design, Environment and Assumptions

The early development of ideas about experimental design and the study of variation, by Sir Ronald A. Fisher in particular, focussed on agricultural experiments. Thus there has been a long history in the biological sciences of attention to design, environmental effects and diagnostic checking of assumptions. However, many of these ideas are only now being incorporated into studies involving molecular markers. Several current packages for QTL analysis largely overlook these issues. Therefore they merit at least brief mention here.
