Profile:
Asoka de Silva, 45, has quickly emerged as Sri Lanka's best-regarded cricket
umpire. A former Sri Lanka leg-spinner in the early 1990s, who was quick
through the air and not a big turner of the ball, he played ten Test matches
and 28 ODIs before retiring from first-class cricket in 1996/7. Having hung
up his boots he became a fully qualified coach before turning his attention
to umpiring. In 1999/00 he made his international umpiring debut at Galle
during Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka.
