Profile:

A dashing strokeplayer and capable wicketkeeper, Chandrakant Pandit was one among several young players in the mid 80s who were in the running to take over the gloves from Syed Kirmani. Kiran More got the nod ultimately because he was the better 'keeper but Pandit's superior batting saw to it that he was not totally discarded. In fact in three of the five Tests he played, he was taken as a middle order bat. He was perhaps a shade fortunate to have played in Tied Test II when he was included following an injury to Dilip Vengsarkar but he did come up with two valuable contributions (35 and 39) in that tense match. He also deputised for More who was indisposed. But in the two Tests he kept wickets when More was unavailable on the 1991-92 tour of Australia, he showed his skill by taking eleven catches.

His Test appearances might have been limited but his attractive batting style saw to it that for some time he was a regular member of the Indian one day side. He played in quite a few limited overs tournaments and proved his value by a number of timely little knocks towards the end of the innings that boosted the scoring rate. After his international career ground to a halt, Pandit joined Madhya Pradesh as a professional and enjoyed some good seasons with the bat. (Partab Ramchand )
