Profile:Far from the first player to leave New South Wales in search of greater opportunities, Shane Deitz has already responded favourably to the opportunities that have come his way in his new surroundings in South Australia. As a left handed upper order batsman and wicketkeeper, Deitz's cause has been hampered by the presence in the Redbacks' squad of several talented batsmen and one of Australia's most promising young glovemen. But he hasn't let it discourage him, making a breakthrough in interstate ranks as a specialist batsman at the end of the 1998-99 season and continuing to appear in the state side in each of the two seasons which have followed. Deitz is a nuggety batsman who possesses the trait of patience in abundance and who always presents the impression that he places a high price on his wicket. He looks at his most comfortable off the back foot, but also drives the ball well to both sides of the wicket. Before leaving Sydney in 1998, Deitz kept wicket for Bankstown-Canterbury and the state's second eleven team, and was a runner-up in the O'Reilly Medal (awarded to the best player in Sydney grade competition) count of 1996-97. He was also a member of New South Wales under-17 and under-19 sides in earlier years, and a part of the national under-17 squad. (John Polack, August 2001)© 2001 CricInfo Ltd |
