Profile:
David Smith was a powerful 6ft 4in left-handed batsman. One of the most
dominating openers in England, it was his volatile nature rather than a
lack of ability that held him back. Sacked and re-employed three times
by Surrey in his younger days, a move to Worcester brought about
selection for England in 1986. He was again called-up by England in 1990
to replace Graham Gooch in the W.Indies , but broke his thumb in a
one-day international and had to return home. Having joined Sussex in
1989, he was appointed to their coaching staff in 1995.
