Profile:
A stylish batsman who thrives on timing rather than brute force,
Aftab Habib made a late entry into first class cricket, only
establishing himself in the Leicestershire side in his mid
twenties. A successful England junior player at under-15 and
under-19 level, he failed to impress after joining Middlesex,
playing just one first-class match before leaving. He was playing
minor-counties cricket for Berkshire when Leicestershire coach
Jack Birkenshaw invited him to join them. He has made steady
progress for his new county, capped by England selection in 1999.
A naturally talented player, his flair is matched with excellent
powers of concentration and he has shown he can build a big
innings. Former England coach David Lloyd says of him:- "Habib
has style. He has a presence at the crease and a touch of
arrogance", and his county coach Birkenshaw believes that "In
terms of natural talent he is one of the most gifted players I
have come across". (DL, June 1999)
