Profile:A player whose uncanny skills once earned him the nickname 'the Freak', Ian Harvey is an all-rounder who has represented Victoria, Gloucestershire and Australia since the time of his first-class debut in 1993-94. As a medium pace bowler, his main assets are skidding bounce and an almost-always deceptive slower ball that is regarded as one of the best of its type in the world. As a batsman, his average has generally remained around the 30-mark in both forms of the game but he is ruthlessly aggressive and enjoys the distinction of having clubbed one of the quickest half-centuries ever made in domestic one-day cricket in Australia. Following sound performances at the state level, Harvey received a call up to the Australian ODI side for the first time in 1997-98 and has subsequently acquitted himself creditably over a number of years. He has never enjoyed the luxury of cementing a truly permanent berth as the team's number one all-rounder, however, and has been required to continue to press his claims through strong performances at the domestic level with both Victoria and Gloucestershire. With the latter, he has enjoyed particular success and was a key member of the side which won an unprecedented four one-day finals in succession during the 1999 and 2000 county seasons.
