Profile:

Few cricketers would have experienced the ups and downs in one season so sharply as Vijay Bhardwaj. At the beginning of the 1999-2000 season he seemed to have emerged as the country's new cricketing hero. Towards the end of the season, he was out of the Indian side.

A string of consistent performances around the domestic circuit including the rare feat of over 1000 runs in the 1998-1999 Ranji Trophy season - pitchforked the unassuming, bespectacled Karnataka youngster into a nationally known figure. His game seemed tailor made for one day cricket. A fine middle order batsman, a more than handy off spinner and a reliable fielder, he was at home in the shorter version of the game. He quickly made it to the top, winning the man of the series award in his debut series in the LG Cup at Nairobi. Based on his excellent performances in the one day game, he was given a chance to play in the Test series against New Zealand in late 1999. He had only modest figures to show in the three Tests and looked out of sorts on the tour of Australia when he lost his place even in the one day side. For a comeback, it will now be a long, hard road to traverse for Bhardwaj.(Partab Ramchand)
