Profile:

Eddo Brandes has been the spearhead of Zimbabwe's bowling attack for over ten years, and is now, in his mid 30s, fitter and bowling perhaps better than ever before. Early in his career he concentrated mainly on raw pace and was criticised for too much short-pitched bowling; he did not have extreme pace by world standards and the placid home pitches often resulted in the bumper being a wasted ball. As he developed, he has slowed his pace a little, pitches the ball up more readily and has developed the skills of movement, becoming a more complete bowler. He has always been a potentially dangerous batsman against all but the fastest bowlers or the highest quality spinners (he has a first-class century to his name). His finest performances have been against England, earning man-of the-match for his part in Zimbabwe's 1992 World Cup victory over them, and then dismissing Knight, Crawley and Hussain to take Zimbabwe's first one-day hat-trick in 1997. He has not always been able to fully participate in Zimbabwe's overseas tours due to his business committments (he is a chicken farmer), and occasionally has had fitness problems for the same reasons. (John Ward and DL, Apr 1999).
