Profile:

With 291 Test and 203 ODI wickets to his name, Craig McDermott rates as one of the most successful bowlers Australia has ever produced. Scorching pace brought him some large hauls early in his career, but he enjoyed more consistent success in the early 1990s as he learned to harness his fiery competitiveness and bowl with greater rhythm. This period included his best Test innings haul (8/97) in the Fifth Ashes Test in 1990/91. He became noted for his skill in moving the ball away from the batsman and also developed an effective slower ball.

Other career highlights include his vital role in Australia's triumphant 1987 World Cup campaign, where he took 18 wickets at 18.94. He also pipped Shane Warne to be Australia's leading wicket-taker in the 1994-95 Ashes campaign, with 32 wickets at 21.09.

McDermott's career haul might have been even better but for injury, which seemed to visit just as he was at his peak. He had to withdraw from the 1993 Ashes tour with a twisted bowel; while an ankle injury, sustained during a training run, ended his tour of the West Indies in 1994-95. McDermott, who was renowned for his dedication to fitness, made a comeback to international cricket the following summer, but recurring injuries ultimately led to his retirement. (Anthony Fallick)
