[2000/01 Season] The icing on the cake for Chris Cairns in 2000 was his 'man of the match' performance against India which led New Zealand to its first ever international tournament win at the ICC KnockOut tournament in October. It followed on his rise to the ranking of No 1 All-rounder in the world. At home he was named The National Bank Player of the Year, and became only the second person in 62 years since the New Zealand Cricket awards began to win both top prizes - the Redpath Cup for batting and the Winsor Cup for bowling. In The National Bank Series v West Indies he topped the Test bowling with 17 wickets at 9.94. This included a career-best and the third best bowling figures in New Zealand Test history, with his 7-27 in the first Test. In the same match Cairns, 29, joined with his father, Lance, to become the only father and son to have captured 10 wickets in a Test match. Against the West Indies he averaged 51.50 with the bat, while he shone against the world champion Australians, topping the Test batting averages with 56.83, including a century.
