Profile:
Playing only one Test the Indian born, Devonshire raised Emmett
came to Gloucestershire after a spell with the MCC ground staff.
Originally selected as a slow left-arm bowler, it soon became
clear he was a talented opening batsman, with rapid footwork,
quick reflexes and excellent timing. Like many small men he was
a superb hooker, and was strong off his legs. His intent was
always aggressive, and his style entertaining. He lost what
might have been his best years to World War two, where he served
with the Artillery, He captained Gloucestershire for four
seasons, increasingly hampered by arthritis in the field. A
stern disciplinarian as a captain his best year was 1956 when
Gloucester finished 3rd in the championship. He was called into
the England team to face the mighty Australian side of 1948,
after Hutton was dropped (Dave Liverman, 1998).
