Profile:

A top class left-handed bat, and useful occasional spinner, Maurice Leyland excelled at the highest level, averaging nearly 57 against the toughest opponents, Australia. Christened "Morris" (his name generally appears as "Maurice") he was born in Harrogate, his father a former groundsman at Edgbaston. He debuted for Yorkshire at 20, and was a regular until his career was effectively ended by the 2nd World War (although he played a few games up to 1947). His highest Test score of 187 was made in his final Test, a contribution to the massive 903/7 at the Oval in 1938. His best first-class bowling of 8-38 was recorded the same year. A powerful batsman who put great force behind his strokes he particularly favoured the drive, and loved to attack. A Yorkshireman through and through, he had a dry sense of humour, and was a great favourite with the Yorksahire crowd. Gerald Pawle, cricket writer with the Yorkshire Post wrote of him "Cap at a jaunty angle he was..... a batsman unmoved by disaster. He could bowl a Chinaman with deceptive innocence, and he was a beautiful mover and thrower in the deep field". (DL, 1999)
