Profile:

Denis Compton's career started just prior to the Second World War, but did not flourish until the post war period, when he was the best batsman in England until a knee injury cut his career short. He was an innovative player, capable of improvising shots, and notorious for his sweep. His greatest weakness was probably that he was a poor runner between the wickets. His statistics would have been even more impressive if his career had not been interrupted for WW2. He bowled left arm wrist spin, and was dangerous, but erratic. His greatest year was 1947 when he made over 3800 runs, including eighteen centuries. He died in April 1997, 50 years after this best of all years. Notable records include 123 career hundreds; his 100th hundred was made in fewer innings than anyone other than Bradman; 38,942 runs at an average of 51.85, in a career that lasted from 1936-64. In 1947 Compton made 18 centuries (the record for an English season),including 6 against the South African tourists, an aggregate of 3,816 (again a record) at an average of over 90. He made the fastest triple hundred on record (181 minutes).
