Profile:
Selected for the England one-day squad for Sharjah when many
would have given up hope for international honours (Fleming will
turn 33 at Sharjah), this former regular Army officer had an
outstanding season for Kent in 1997, proving himself a useful
all rounder, particularly adept at the one-day game. He had been
established in the Kent side as a bits-and pieces player,
capable of bowling economically, and scoring rapidly with his
stylish batting, but 1997 saw him flourish with bat and ball,
and also pen, occasionally contributing notes from the county
scene to the Daily Telegraph. Described by Christopher
Martin-Jenkins as "an occasionally inspirational and inspired
player, always wholehearted and brilliant at cover point". He
bowls medium pace with much variation, and recently added an
effective out-swinger to his armoury. Currently chairman of the
Professional Cricketers' Association. (Dave Liverman, Dec 1997).
