Profile:As fearsome a player of the hook, pull and square cut as possibly any in Australia, Michael DiVenuto is a dashing left handed batsman who originates from Tasmania. Nicely balanced at the crease and blessed with a fine eye, he hits his shots with thunderous power and is a genuine crowd pleaser. Although his tendency to attack bowling a little too frequently for his own good can lead him into trouble on occasions, DiVenuto has, since the time of making his debut during the 1991-92 season, compiled an excellent first-class record for Tasmania and English counties Sussex and Derbyshire. In a career in which he has played many outstanding innings (none more impressive than his glorious 189 in Perth in the 1997-98 Sheffield Shield Final), he has generally batted in the number three position, but he does have the ability to play well at most spots in the order. Indeed, he has often been used as an opener in one-day matches - and it was in that role that he enjoyed his brief flirtation with international cricket in late 1997. It is a measure of his worth as a player that Tasmania fought so keenly to ward off a lucrative approach to him from South Australia in the lead-up to the 2001-02 domestic season.
