Profile:

A slightly built batsman whose talents have seen him represent Western Australia, Middlesex and Australia, Justin Langer has long been a prolific scorer at first-class level.

The nephew of former WA batsman Robbie Langer, he first rose to prominence on the back of his superb 149 in the Sheffield Shield Final of 1991-92. A glorious innings which not only gave hint of his fine powers of concentration but also his capacity to revel amid intense pressure, it set the tone for the defiant approach to run scoring which has been his trademark ever since. In the following season, his bravery in weathering an inspired pace bowling assault from Curtly Ambrose and Courtney Walsh in each innings of his debut Test only enhanced his reputation.

While he has never truly established a permanent place at international level, Langer has ultimately become an outstanding contributor to Australian Test teams during recent seasons. He was a regular at number three for a period of two-and-a-half years from the late 1990s, bringing his fierce determination and his wide mix of defensive and attacking strokes to bear in a number of memorable innings. Among these, his hand of 127 in the midst of a remarkable Test-winning partnership of 238 with Adam Gilchrist against Pakistan in Hobart in 1999-2000 remains widely acknowledged as the finest.

By his own admission, the hard-working Western Australian left hander then met one of the lowest ebbs of his career on Australia's 2001 Ashes tour when he surrendered his hard-earned mantle as his country's first-choice number three batsman. But an opportunity at the end of that five-match series to replace Michael Slater in a role as an opener has allowed Langer to reclaim his Test spot and again showcase his inestimable worth to Australian cricket.

Alongside a remarkable five centuries in seven matches for the Western Australian upon his return to Test cricket, he joined with fellow left hander Matthew Hayden to craft an astonishing four double-century stands in the space of their initial ten appearances together. In registering as many partnerships in excess of the 200 mark, they duly realised a feat that had never previously been bettered by any pair of openers in the entirety of Test match history.
