Profile:
Called into the England side to face the 1921 Australians after
making a good score against for them for the MCC, John Evans did
not shine in his one Test. He captained Oxford, like his father,
represented Hampshire, and captained Kent. Altham wrote of him
"a somewhat uncertain starter with the bat, his method once he
got going, was both classical and impressive". He was also a
useful bowler with the new ball. Imprisoned in a Prisoner of War
camp in World War 1, he escaped, later writing a popular book
about his exploits (Dave Liverman, 1998).
