Pictures of Stuart Law
Profile:The first Queenslander to captain his native side to a Sheffield Shield triumph, Stuart Law has enjoyed significant success with his State and with county team Essex. With so much competition abounding for batting spots in his national team, however, the elegant right hander has been one of a number of players in Australia over recent years whose sterling performances at first class level have counted for little in the way of higher honours. Despite continuing to maintain a first class average of close to the fifty mark for the majority of a career which began in 1988-89, he has in fact only been afforded one opportunity to prove himself in the Test side. He compiled an unbeaten half century in that single appearance (against Sri Lanka in Perth in 1995-96), thus leaving himself without a Test average, and he has not been recalled at any time since. Otherwise, Law has essentially been pigeon-holed as a one-day player at the elite level. Yet he has also courted disappointment in that arena too: he has played more than fifty one-day internationals in total (including the 1996 World Cup Final loss) but was axed not long before Australia embarked on its unforgettable 1999 World Cup campaign. For all of the potential that has created for discouragement though, the fluent Law has rarely lost his thirst for runs or for domestic titles, as many as five of which have come his way at Queensland's helm. He has also proved a valuable asset at Essex and the sterling performance which made him the County Championship's leading run scorer in 1999 has been typical of the quality of his output.
