Profile:
Dulip Liyanage, a fast medium bowler, has just made a comeback into the senior squad after four years in the wilderness. The hard-working pace bowler, who bowls right-handed, but bats left-handed was born in the coastal town of Kalutara and schooled at Kalutara Maha Vidyalaya. Liyanage made his test debut alongside Muttiah Muralitharan in the Second Test Match against the touring Aussies in 1992. He had an impressive debut, taking the wicket of Tom Moody with his third ball in Test cricket and going onto claim the wickets of Alan Boarder and David Boon in the Australian first innings. In the two Tests following against New Zealand he continued his promising form taking seven wickets in a series generally dominated by the Sri Lankan spin battery. On the unresponsive pitches in India he went wicket-less during Sri Lanka's disappointing 1994 tour. Injury limited his future opportunities and he drifted into obscurity before making a surprise, albeit short-lived, return to the international arena at one day level in 1997. He represented Sri Lanka in seven ODIs after his return, but after the Wills Quadrangular tournament in Pakistan he was injured again and was out of action. After an impressive season with Colts CC he was given another chance and recalled to the squad for India's tour of Sri Lanka (August 2001). He played in the final Colombo Test, in which he bowled just 14 overs, before being controversially dropped by the selectors. (20.9.01)
