Profile:
A versatile left-arm bowler, Harry Dean appeared for Lancashire from 1906 to
1921, a career interrupted by the First World War. Varying his pace between
fast-medium and slow according to the conditions, he took over 1,000 wickets
for Lancashire at an average of just over 18. As a medium pacer he swung the
ball deceptively, and on a rain-damaged wicket was most effective with his
slower style. He played just twice for England in the triangular tournament
of 1912, and took eleven wickets at 13.9 - notably taking 4/19 against
Australia as they were bowled out for just 65 at the Oval. Possibly the most
satisfying performance for Dean, however, would be the 9/22 and 8/29 he
recorded against Yorkshire in 1913, the best bowling recorded in the history
of the Roses match. At the conclusion of his first-class career, he played
for Cheshire for several years, and later coached at Rossall School (DL 2000).
