    Profile:

A fixture in the West Indian sides of the 60s, Conrad Hunte averaged over 45 in Tests, exceptional in any circumstances, but particularly so when opening the innings. Many openers find a favourite partner - in the West Indies Greenidge and Haynes will always be linked in such a manner - but Hunte was never regularly paired with a player of similar ability. He made an immediate impact in Test cricket scoring a century on debut, and later in the series made 260, whilst Sobers made his 365 at the other end. His technique was founded on solid defence, and he often played with considerable restraint, avoiding the flamboyant strokes. He could despatch the loose ball effectively, however, being a wonderful cutter. He tended to favour the back foot, and was a master at leaving the good length ball outside off early in his innings. He became vice-captain of the West Indies, leading them on occasion. A quiet, modest man, he always conducted himself on and off the field with dignity, being generous with his praise to team-mates and opponents alike. After spending seven years as a cricket officer in South Africa, in 1998 he returned to his native Barbados to work in the Ministry of Youth and Culture. He died of a heart attack in Australia in December 1999. (DL, Dec 1999)
