Profile:

Winston Place debuted for Lancashire before the 2nd World War, but made little impression at the time. But his batting in 1946 was a revelation, when he established himself as a solid opening partner for Cyril Washbrook. Place's best year was 1947, when he made nine centuries, his highest score of 266*, over 2500 runs and averaged over 60.

A strong driver, and an excellent player of spin bowling, Place was picked to tour the West Indies in 1947-48. He played in three Tests there, making an excellent century in what was to prove to be his final Test innings. He toured India with a Commonwealth XI in 1949-50, and continued to prosper on the county scene, making 1000 runs in a season eight times in all. On retirement he became a first-class umpire, but stood at that level in just one season. (David Liverman, Copyright CricInfo 2001)
