Profile:
A burly all-rounder, a journeyman county player for
Lancashire for years, his selection for the England one-day squad
in 1998 at the age of 32 caused some surprise. He is highly
regarded by his fellow-players however as a very effective
one-day player, his accurate bowling very hard to get away, and
capable of useful runs. He bowls right arm medium pace (batting
left) with a full length and specialises in bowling at the
"death" in one-day games. His build might suggest a lack of
atheleticism in the field, but he is reliable in most positions,
safe hands ands a strong arm compensating for a lack of pace. His all-round ability was vital in Lanacashire's one-day double in 1998. A
very popular player, Wisden's editor Mathew Engle wrote in
selecting him as a Cricketer of the year in 1999 "He is
Lancashire to the marrow. When he succeeds there is a special
cheer in the Old Trafford pavilion because they regard him as one
of their own" (DL 1999).
