Profile:
A left arm spinner whose strength was length and accuracy, Cecil
(Sam) Cook was always economical, and spun the ball
considerably, but his lack of flight made him less effective as
an attacking bowler. His performance in his one Test did little
to encourage further selection, but he partnered Tom Goddard in
Gloucestershire's spin attack for many years, and later became a
first-class umpire. He took a wicket with his first ball in
first class cricket, and was a poor bat, employing a shot of his
own that he called the "Tetbury chop", and his teammates
"killing the rat" (Dave Liverman, 1998).
