Profile:

Roger Telemachus has been unlucky to have his career coincide with a period during which South Africa have been liberally blessed with fast bowling talent. This, together with a couple of badly-timed injuries, has held his career back. He was chosen to tour Australia in 1997/98, but had to withdraw from the squad after failing a fitness test. In 1998 he made it to England, only to have to return home with an injury early in the tour. In the meantime, the likes of Makhaya Ntini, David Terbrugge and Nantie Hayward stepped past him on the ladder. Still, at 27 Telemachus still has time to make a name for himself if he can steer free of injury and demonstrate that he has more than one spell an innings in him. When fully fit, he generates enough movement at a lively fast-medium pace to pose questions for most top-order batsmen. His move from Boland to Western Province in the 1999/2000 probably did him no harm as he mixed with the experience of Craig Matthews, Eric Simons, Brian McMillan and Jacques Kallis. Opportunities to play international cricket will not come along too often for Telemachus. When they do, he has to be sure he takes them. (Peter Robinson. July 2000)
