Profile:

Michael Holding has been called "the Rolls Royce of Bowlers" - a genuinely fast bowler with one of the smoothest actions of all. He was a talented sprinter in his teens, and this showed in his graceful and silent approach to the wicket. Several umpires reported that they did not hear the sound of his approach until he passed them leading to his nickname of "whispering death". He was capable of terrorising batsmen with his steep bounce and intimidating pace, notably the Indian tourists at Kingston in 1975, and an aging Brian Close at Old Trafford in 1976. He was possibly the fastest of a powerful fast bowling line-up in the great West Indian sides of the 1970s and 80s, capable of getting movement even with the old ball and could surprise even great batsmen at any time of the match. Not a great batsman, he could hard and far on occasion. An articulate and thoughtful man, after his retirement (brought about prematurely due to back problems) he now has a successful career as a commentator. (Muraari Vasudevan (muraariv@rocketmail.com) and Dave Liverman, Nov 1997).
