Profile:

Chaminda Vaas, a strict Roman Catholic, grew up in Wattala and was schooled at St Josephs College in Colombo. He once disclosed his desire to become a catholic priest, but this ambition was sidelined, as he became Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler ever. At 20 years of age he made his debut against Pakistan at Kandy in 1994/5, a venue he returned to you in 1999 to set-up an historic Test series victory, as he ran through the Australian batting in the first session of the match. Vaas went on to become the first ever Sri Lankan bowler to take ten wickets in a Test match when he toured New Zealand in 1995. He is a left arm bowler, who bowls with a rhythmical run up and a smooth, sideways on action. Although not express in pace he is able to swing the ball into and away from the right-handers and cut also cut the ball off the pitch. He has been Sri Lanka 's premier fast bowler since making his debut and is usually required to bowl long spells in tandem with Muttiah Muralitharan. He has recently become increasingly effective having painstakingly learnt the art of reverse swing, a skill he used to excellent effect during recent series. Over the years his batting has developed and he is now considered to be a genuine all rounder. In ODIs he is occasionally promoted as a pinch hitter. Vaas has been regular member of the Sri Lanka side since he made his debut Muralitharan has taken more wickets than him for Sri Lanka. In December 2001 he became the first bowler to take more than seven wickets in an ODI when he took 8-19 against Zimbabwe.(30.04.2002)
