Profile:
Mohammad Ashraful burst on to the international scene in the Asian Test
Championship in September 2001, with a century on his Test debut against Sri
Lanka which made him the youngest batsman ever to score a Test hundred. Aged
just 17 years and 63 days
, he beat the
30-year-old record set by Mushtaq Mohammad of Pakistan, who made his first
Test century aged 17 years and 81 days. Ashraful also broke the record set
two months earlier by Zimbabwe's Hamilton Masakadza (17 years 354 days) for
being the youngest batsman to score a century on Test debut.
Ashraful, a diminutive right-hander, first caught the eye in a one-day
match against the Commonwealth Bank Academy of Cricket, with a relentless
batting assault that was watched by, amongst others, Akram Khan who was
playing for the opposition. Ashraful finished with an unbeaten century. He
also won admirers for his performance in Asian Under-17 cricket. The 69 he
made against India in the final was enthralling, although Bangladesh
eventually had to be content with the runners-up trophy.
Ashraful began his career as a specialist leg-spinner, but later focused
on his batting. His leg-spin does not look hostile, but is nevertheless
effective. In Zimbabwe in 2001 he played a single ODI, dismissing Andy
Flower. He showed courage with the bat after a shaky start; he twice smashed
Bryan Strang over the boundary, but got out attempting a third.
