Statistics involving Doug Walters

Profile:

Hailing from the small NSW town of Dungog, Doug Walters went on to become one of Australia's great cricketing folk-heroes. Fans related to his unassuming, country-bred character and traits such as his famous dislike of training, while also admiring his exciting natural talent. For Walters was a match-winner: an unorthodox, instinctive batsman capable of scoring a century in a session; a medium-pacer noted for his ability to break established partnerships; and a fine slips fieldsman.

Walters burst onto the international scene in the mid-1960s with centuries in each of his first two Tests. His career included several prolific series, but it is hard to go past his performance in the 1968-69 series against the West Indies, where his 699 runs at 116.50 included three centuries and one double-century.

One aspect of his Test career which remained unfulfilled was success in England, where the conditions were ill-suited to his technique. Nonetheless, Walters proved to be an extremely durable batsman, extending his career into a third decade and averaging better than 50 in the 1980-81 season against New Zealand and India.

Walters now has a stand named after him at the Sydney Cricket Ground, situated on the "Hill", where many of his most enthusiastic fans congregated to watch him play. (Anthony Fallick)
