Profile:

Overshadowed by his Bombay schoolmate Tendulkar throughout, Kambli arrived with a bang when he debuted against England in 1992-93. The free-stroking left-hander with the high backlift scored two successive double centuries in tests and followed it up with two more centuries in as many tests against Sri Lanka ending up with a phenomenal, ``Bradmanesque`` average in his first 7 tests. From then on, his average has been steadily declining as he has struggled to cope with fast, bouncy bowling and a loss of form. After short periods out of the team, Kambli is gradually getting back to his best, and is showing the appetite for success which had served him so well previously. His quicksilver footwork and Clive Lloyd-like high backlift continue to combine well to make him the nemesis of spin bowlers worldwide, and the Australian genius Shane Warne in particular. He has been in and out if the team on account of either indifferent form or injury. He was dropped after the Sahara Cup, 1996, and was recalled for the Independence cup in 1997. But he was dropped again and was recalled for the triangular series in India and Sharjah early in 1999. His scores did not impress the selectors and a dejected Kambli was not included for the World Cup squad to England. He hasn't represented India in a test match since 1995. A long tough road is ahead for Kambli, especially with the number of youngsters performing well in the domestic circuit and putting pressure on the selectors. (Aditya N.
