Profile:

The best cricketer of a fine cricketing family (his father an uncle and two brothers also played first-class cricket) , Jack Crawford was a schoolboy prodigy at Repton, played for his county at 17, and his country at 19. A complete all-rounder, described by HS Altham as "a medium paced bowler of beautiful action, great accuracy, and every possible device, a batsman of extraordinary power but classic method, and a magnificent field in any position". He batted with an upright style, with basically orthodox technique but could hit extremely hard, especially straight. He toured Australia in 1907-8, where he was most successful in adapting his bowling to prevailing conditions. This promising career ended abruptly when he took issue with the Surrey authorities over the omission of two professionals from an XI he was to captain against Australia. In a dispute that with the passage of time seems absurd, neither side would back down, and Crawford left English first-class cricket for ten years, moving to Australia, playing Shield cricket, and only returning to Surrey after the first world war (Dave Liverman, 1998).
