Profile:
From the untraditional cricket nursery of northeast Scotland, he
rose to captain Kent and England, as a solid opening bat. When
partnered with Brian Luckhurst Kent had the best opening pair in
England in the early 70s. His period as England captain was
difficult, and he endured much criticism in the press for his
unreliable form with the bat. He was an orthodox but sound
captain, and somewhat unfortunate to come up against Lillee and
Thompson at their best in 1974-75 after a successful tour of the
West Indies. He was a stylish, forcing bat, with excellent
technique against spin, and a good fielder in the covers. Kent
enjoyed much success under his captaincy, as did Essex after his
move in 1979 (Dave Liverman, 1998).
Divorced with one son and two daughters.
Interests include all sports, travel and cricket history past and present.
Co-founder/director of KBMD Public relations and sports sponsorship consultancy.
He captained Englnad in 19 Test matches.
