Profile:

Alec Coxon debuted for his native Yorkshire in 1945 at the age of 29, the war causing him to miss an important part of his career. He was a useful right-hand fast-medium bowler, and also a reasonable lower-order bat with a first-class best of 83 against Nottinghamshire in 1948. On the strength of a good county season he was brought into the Test team to face the might of the 1948 Australians at Lord's. He got off to a fine start, dismissing Barnes for a duck, and later removed the other opener Morris, but not until he'd completed a century. He batted at seven, as England had a long tail, and made 19 in the first innings. He bowled economically as Australia compiled 460/7 in the second innings, and his Test career came to an abrupt close when Toshack dismissed him for a duck. He played two more years for Yorkshire, and after taking 131 wickets at an average of just over 18 in 1950, he moved to Durham and played no more first-class cricket (DL 2000).
