Profile:
Subroto Guha arrived on the scene when the accent of the Indian attack
was almost totally dependent on spin. His Test appearances thus were
limited, which was a pity for he was an accurate right arm medium pace
bowler who could swing the ball both ways. He made his presence felt
when he took eleven wickets to bowl an unfancied combined Central and
East Zone team to a shock victory over the all conquering West Indian
side in 1966-67. He had a nightmarish start to his Test career when he
sent down 48 overs and went wicketless after conceding 115 runs
against England at Leeds in 1967. On the tour he took 22 wickets in 13
games. Overlooked for the tour of Australia and New Zealand in
1967-68, Guha played three Tests against Australia in 1969-70 with
moderate success and was not considered thereafter.
In the Ranji Trophy however Guha was a pillar of strength to Bengal
for over a decade and took 209 wickets (14.61). In his first class
career, Guha captured 299 wickets (20.29). (Partab
