Profile:
Jason Brown was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme in October 1974. Though he
initially failed to make an impact at first-class level, he made huge
strides in the 2000 season.
Educated in Stoke-on-Trent, Brown represented Staffordshire at all junior
levels, and then as a Minor County, including the NatWest Trophy of 1995. He
made his Northants debut in 1996, but struggled to win a place in
competition with the all-round skills of off-spinner Graeme Swann (Brown is
very much a tailend batsman), and left-arm spinner Michael Davies. Brown
benefited from the decision by Northamptonshire to concentrate on their spin
resources. With dry pitches ensuring that two spinners played in most of
their home games, and Michael Davies losing form, Brown earned a prolonged
run in the side.
Brown played only 16 first-class games prior to the 2000 season, with a
best of 6-53 against Somerset at Taunton in 1998. He played 10 matches in
2000, taking 61 wickets at 20.62, with two ten-wicket matches and four
five-wicket hauls (including a best of 7-78). He out-bowled international
county colleague Graeme Swann and won selection for the A tour to the West
Indies. But after Ian Salisbury struggled in Pakistan, the England
selectors called up Brown and Robert Croft as replacements for Salisbury and
the injured Dominic Cork for the 2001 tour of Sri Lanka. Brown spent the
first month of the A tour performing with credit in the West Indies, before
joining the Test squad in Sri Lanka at the end of January. (George Dobell,
