Profile:

The amiable Hudson has experienced the extremes of fortune in his international career. Opening the batting against India in Calcutta in South Africa's first post-isolation international match he was dismissed for a duck in the first over by Kapil Dev. He did not bat again in tha t short tour of India but the selectors kept faith in him and he rewarded them with consistent performances in the subsequent World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. From the disappointments of his one-day debut, the elegant opening batsman made a sensational entrance into Test Cricket with a score of 163 against a powerful West Indian pace attack in Bridgetown, Barbados. He thus became the only South African to score a century in his first Test innings. Despite Hudson's efforts, South Africa lost the Test, and Hudson was again on the losing side when he made his second Test century against Australia at Newlands in 1994. He had a disappointing tour of England in 1994 and after more below par performances against New Zealand in South Africa he was dropped. A fine century in the inaugural test against Zimbabwe in Harare set him up for the 1995/96 season and although he failed to register a 50 in the Tests against England he found form during the limited over internationals and enjoyed a successful World Cup. He scored a his 4th Test century in South Africa's emphatic win against India at Eden Gardens, but this was the sole high point for him in the 3 test series.
