Profile:
Sairaj Bahutule had the misfortune to be baptised into international
cricket through the shorter version of the game. An attacking leg
spinner of his type should have ideally been given the initial break
in Tests where the number of runs given away is not an issue. A
sensational Irani Trophy showing for Mumbai in 1997-98, netting eight
wickets in an innings and 13 in the match, pitchforked Bahutule into
national focus. Later that season, he dished out another forceful
reminder of his abilities in the final `Test' on India A's tour of
Pakistan. Scores of 43 & 27 in a low scoring game plus match figures
of 7/59 translated into a 58-run victory for India A and the Man of
the Match award for Bahutule.
Sandwiched in between these two occurences were seven ODI appearances
in which Bahutule had a conspicuous lack of success. After missing the
bulk of the 1999-2000 calendar through injury, Bahutule pressed his
claims forcefully in the 2000-01 domestic season. Second in the Duleep
Trophy wickets tally, he also made a strong impression in the warm-up
game for Mumbai against the touring Australians. Rewarded with a
maiden Test cap in the decider at Chennai, Bahutule bowled steadily
but was overshadowed by a rampant Harbhajan Singh. A genuine all
rounder at the domestic level, his five Ranji centuries include a best
of 134 not out vs Karnataka in 1993-94. (Sankhya Krishnan)
