Profile:

Upul Chandana's career has blossomed in 2002 ever since he was asked to captain Sri Lanka A against Kenya. His batting gained a new authority and his bowling greater potency, as he topped both the batting and bowling averages in the unofficial Test series. Also a wonderfully supple fielder, the soon to be 30 year old has been on the fringes of both the national squad for a number of years, but now has a chance of securing more permanent place, especially in the ODI team (he does have 86 ODI caps) where his explosive ability in the middle order proved a real asset in the recently completed Sharjah Cup 2002. He has only played six Tests for Sri Lanka despite taking six wickets on debut against Pakistan in the Asian Test Championship in 1999. His leg breaks are nagging rather than explosive. He plays his club cricket for Tamil Union.(30.04.2002)
