Profile:One of the more consistent, reliable and underestimated bowlers of the last decade, paceman Damien Fleming continues to serve as a key figure in Victorian and Australian cricket. Like his state teammate Paul Reiffel, he has been one of his country's best performed players of recent times, albeit that the advent of a series of untimely injuries has tended to weaken his hold on a regular berth at international level. Fleming lopes to the bowling crease off a relatively short run-up but possesses a high and fluent action, extracts lively pace, and is well known for a looping outswinger which can bamboozle even the world's best batsmen. His economical approach to the wicket generally translates to a miserly run rate and, for that, he has long been seen as one of the world's best one-day bowlers. Notwithstanding his regular struggles against injury, his career has already touched a number of high spots - perhaps most notably in Rawalpindi in 1994, when he became only the third player in history to claim a hat-trick on Test debut. Having held his nerve magnificently amid stifling pressure, he will also long be remembered for playing starring roles at the bowling crease during the concluding overs of the dramatic 1996 and 1999 World Cup semi-finals against West Indies and South Africa respectively. Aside from his bowling, the unassuming and jovial Fleming is a capable outfielder and a useful lower-order batsman who likes to counter his opponents with hard-hit, if often slightly ungainly, shots square of the wicket.
