Profile:

Almost solely responsible for the return of Derbyshire to the first-class ranks in the late 19th century, William Chatteron was an excellent defensive batsman, and a useful bowler. He could play attacking cricket when necessary but Wisden described his batting as "essentially watchful and steady". He represented the Players eight times against the Gentlemen, and made eight first-class centuries. He toured South Africa with W.W Read's team in 1891-92 (that winter two England teams toured, the other in the West Indies). He played in the only Test, making 48 as an opener as England won by an innings. He was the top run scorer on the tour, but the batting strength of England at that time was such that he never played another Test. He played for 20 years with Derbyshire, and represented Derby County at football. He passed away of consumption at the age of 50 (DL 2000).
