Profile:

David Hookes was a naturally aggressive strokeplayer who became renowned for his fast scoring rate. He debuted for Australia in the 1977 Centenary Test at the MCG, announcing his ability in the international arena with a half-century which included five boundaries off a single Tony Greig over. Only a month earlier, in February 1977, Hookes had scored his first century in the Sheffield Shield state competition, taking twenty-nine (including four sixes and one four) off one over from Victorian leg-spinner Colin Thwaites. His ability to maul bowlers in this way remained with him throughout most of his first-class career - in 1982/83 he set an Australian record for the fastest first-class century (34 balls, against Victoria). However, he often tempered his aggression in the 1980s with the added responsibility of captaining South Australia.

Hookes' exciting batting had made him a great catch for Kerry Packer's breakaway World Series Cricket in the late 1970s, but his career stalled in the subsequent period: he had his jaw shattered by an Andy Roberts bouncer, and then struggled for form in the period after WSC ended. He nonetheless made further appearances for Australia in the 1980s and had a fine 1982/83 season, averaging close to 50 in the five-Test Ashes series, and then making a Test century against Sri Lanka.

Hookes led South Australia to a Sheffield Shield title in 1981/82 and retired 10 years later as his state's leading run-scorer. He remains a high-profile commentator and coach. (Anthony Fallick)
