Profile:
Charith Senanayake was given an opportunity to establish a
position as an opener on the 1990/91 tour of New Zealand. A left
handed batsman, he was a capable strokeplayer but was probably
better suited down the order on the New Zealand wickets where his
defence was questionable against the new ball. In the second Test
at Hamilton he made his highest test score of 64, adding 95 for
the first wicket with Chandika Hathurusinghe. With Roshan
Mahanama and Hathurusinghe forming a solid opening pair
Senanayake was not given another opportunity following the tour.
In seven one day internationals he failed to impress somewhat
surprisingly, as the free scoring nature of the game seemed to
suit his mentality.
