Profile:

William Gunn translated his practical attitude on the cricket field to business, founding the successful sports equipment firm of Gunn and Moore. As a batsman he was the premier defensive batsman of his generation, using his great height to smother the ball. He was a useful round-arm bowler, and famous for his abilities in the deep field. He was more than capable of hitting, but chose to eschew the lofted shots because of their inherent risk. He played with an immaculate straight bat, driving with power ,and using his wrists to whip away the shorter ball. He and his contemporary, Shrewsbury formed a formidable partnership for Nottinghamshire. He also represented England at soccer, and in later life was a director of Notts County. He became the first former professional to serve on a County committee, elected to the position with Nottinghamshire after his retirement. HS Altham wrote of him "very few batsmen can have so combined power, orthodoxy and grace". His nephews George and John both represented England (Dave Liverman, 1999).
