Profile:
A string of brilliant performances in the last couple of years
have pitchforked Murali Kartik into the Indian team. With the ball,
the 23-year-old Chennai born left arm spinner is a true artist.
From an ideal action, he delivers the ball with a nice loop. The
ball comes down from a tantalising arc and very soon the batsman
is in trouble, not knowing whether to play forward or back, unaware
of what exactly the ball will do after pitching. For Kartik has the knack
of pitching the ball on a length which is inconvenient for
the batsman. Moreover the teasing flight and considerable bounce
and turn he achieves causes enough problems.
A talented and level headed youngster with a calm temparament,
Kartik came into prominence on the India A tour of West Indies
early in 2000 taking six for 75 in the first `Test' and three for
64 and five for 73 in the second. A series of fine performances
in the Ranji Trophy followed and the clincher came with his
excellent showing for the Board President's XI against the
South Africans at Mumbai. This saw him make his Test debut against the
visitors. He played in four consecutive Tests
over two seasons but was not given the long spells he likes.
In his limited opportunities, he has done well enough and could
be a long term prospect with more sympathetic handling. At the
domestic level he continues to be a prolific wicket taker,
symbolised by his 13-wicket match haul (including nine for 70
in the second innings) in the 2000-2001 Irani Trophy match against
Mumbai.(Partab Ramchand)
