Profile:
A batsman who combined elegance with courage, Hemu Adhikari was also
one of the first outstanding Indian fielders. He provided much
strength in the middle order with a penchant for excelling in a
crisis. His Test career lasted over a decade but mainly because of his
duties as an officer in the Indian army, he was in and out of the
team. Still, almost whenever he played, he proved his worth. In his
debut series, he twice displayed his tenacity. First, when he scored
51 and helped Vijay Hazare put on 132 runs for the seventh wicket in
the fourth Test at Adelaide and then when he and Vinoo Mankad added
124 runs for the second wicket in the fifth Test at Melbourne,
Adhikari's share being 38. His only Test century was made when runs
were badly needed against West Indies at New Delhi in 1948-49. Another
notable innings was his 60 in a losing cause on a turning track
against England at Kanpur in 1951-52. He toured England in 1952 as
vice captain to Hazare. Against Pakistan at New Delhi in 1952-53
Adhikari scored 81 not out at No 8 and added 109 runs for the last
wicket with Ghulam Ahmed, an Indian record that still stands. His
career ended on a high note. Called in a desperate measure to become
India's fourth captain in the 1958-59 series against West Indies, he
not only prevented the powerful visitors from notching up a fourth
successive win but also scored 63 and 40 and picked up three wickets
with his little fancied leg breaks.
In a first class career that spanned almost quarter of a century,
Adhikari scored 8628 runs (41.88) including 18 centuries. His highest
score was 230 not out for Services against Rajputana in 1951-52. While
playing for Baroda, he scored 129 and 151 not out against Nawanagar in
1945-46. A shrewd captain of the Services team for several years,
Adhikari also managed the victorious Indian team in England in 1971.
