Profile:
In virtually any other era, Bob Taylor would surely have doubled the number
of his 57 Test caps. But he had the misfortune to be a contemporary of Alan
Knott. Cricket lovers argue long and hard over who was the king behind the
stumps but there can be no doubt that Knott was the better batsman. The Kent
keeper hit five centuries and more than 4,000 runs in his 95 matches at an
average of 32.75, while Taylor mustered 1,156 in 57 games, averaging 16.28 and there's the rub. When there was so little to choose between them as
keepers, Knott was always going to get the nod because of his battling
ability. But when Knott succumbed to Test match bans, Taylor took over
behind the stumps and rarely let England down. In 1980 in Bombay he took
seven catches in an innings and ten in the game altogether, eight off the
bowling of Ian Botham. He played in the 1979 World Cup Final at Lord's,
where England were defeated by the West Indies. In his career with
Derbyshire between 1961 and 1983, he claimed 1,473 catches and 176 stumpings
- a world record for dismissals in a career. (Graham Holburn, Copyright
