Profile:
Left arm pace bowler Ruchira Perera, 24, has had his fair share of injuries
and has been in and out of the national team in recent times, but remains
one of the liveliest fast bowlers in the country. He was born in Kotte on 6
April 1977 and played for his school, Ananda Sastralaya, from the U13 to U19
level. He first emerged onto the national scene in 1998 when he played
against England A. He was then selected against the Australian Academy side
that toured in the same year. His ability to bowl with genuine pace and
swing the ball forced him into the national squad to Australia in 1998/99,
where he made his ODI debut against England in the Carlton & United Series
and impressed with the wickets of Nick Night, Graeme Hick and Nasser
Hussain. He made his Test debut against India in the Asian Championships at
the SSC, but then was sidelined for nearly a year with a stress fracture in
his lower back. He finally made a comeback against South Africa at SSC in
August 2000. He just missed out on selection for Sri Lanka' s tour of South
Africa, but ended up playing in the final Test as a replacement for Chaminda
Vaas. With Sri Lanka playing just two fast bowlers during the England tour
he failed to play in the Tests or ODIs, although he did play in a Board XI
game, in which he became embroiled in an ugly verbal confrontation with
England all-rounder Craig White. Sri Lanka's current fast bowling focused
strategy, however, provided Perera with another opportunity. He was selected
for the first two Tests against India and bowled creditably before being
surprisingly dropped in the decisive third Test. He was quickly recalled for
Asian Test Championship clash against Bangladesh but will now face stiff
competition for his place from Nuwan Zoysa, who is now back to full fitness.
