Profile:

After failing to establish himself in the Nottinghamshire XI, George Bean moved south, where for many years he batted for Sussex at Hove. A brilliant cutter, he made the most of what were at the time the best wickets in England. He was also a useful medium pace bowler, and fielded well at cover. His best year was 1891, when he topped the Sussex averages, made 145* and 92 against Nottinghamshire, and was selected to tour Australia. Bean played three Tests on the tour without distinguishing himself, and a complete loss of county form in 1892 led to him dropping out of contention for England. However his form returned in 1893, and he played five more seasons for Sussex before retiring, and joining the ground staff at Lord's, where he remained until his death (DL, 2000).
