Profile:

Fairfax, originally an elegant if somewhat restrained batsman he became a genuine all-rounder who would almost certainly have played many more tests had he not signed as a professional for Accrington in the Lancashire League in 1932. He remained in England running an indoor cricket school in London until the war. His test career could hardly have had a better start as in his first match he made 65 as he shared in an Australian record fifth wicket stand of 183 with another of the season's test debutants, one Donald George Bradman. His test batting average of over 50 is all the more remarkable as it wasn't boosted by any centuries. His bowling at a lively medium pace delivered from a high action and close to the stumps was initially seen as a useful adjunct to his batting but he soon developed into a genuine all rounder. He was badly injured during the war and his health never fully recovered. (Jeff Green, greenjk@dircon.co.uk)
