Profile:

Thilan Samaraweera is a journeyman cricketer. Primarily an orthodox off spinner he has worked so hard on his batting that he made an unbeaten century on debut against India in August 2001. The 25-year-old had forced his way into the Test team after two years of consistent success with his club, the Sinhalese Sports Club, in Board XI matches against touring teams and for the A team, whom he had captained shrewdly against Zimbabwe (April 2000) and Pakistan (June 2001). He played his first ODI when selected for the Champions Trophy at Sharjah in 1998/99. This was followed shortly afterwards by a man of the match performance (3/37) against England at the SCG when Sri Lanka defended 181 in the Carlton and United Series in Australia. He played in the next game at Melbourne too, but proved expensive and was dropped until selected for the ARY Gold Cup in March 2001 at Sharjah. He struggled to secure a place because of the indomitable presence of Muttiah Muralitharan, the selectors faith in off-spinning all rounder Kumar Dharmasena and the fact that a number of the top order bowl part-time off spin. Finally, though, he appears to be establishing himself in the team, as a fully-fledged all rounder who can bat at number seven. After scoring his debut century he went from strength to strength, scoring one further hundred and three fifties, solidifying the middle order with Hashan Tillakaratne. After nine Tests his batting average was an astonishing 87.16. He is essentially an adhesive and defensive player, who's run scoring depends largely upon patience and sound shot selection. However, when on top, as witnessed during his debut Test, he can play a range of attacking shots. He enjoyed less success with the ball - although his five Test wickets to date included Andy Flower, Brian Lara and Sourav Ganguly - but his bowling is generally characterised by its steady accuracy and subtle variations. He does not spin the ball as prodigiously as Muralitharan, but a sharp cricketing brain allows him to apply pressure on the batsmen during the course of long spells.(30.04.2002)
