Profile:
A thrilling opening bat with a penchant for hitting the first
ball of the innings for a straight six, Harold Gimblett gladdened
the hearts of many a Somerset supporter in the years either side
of the second World War. Like that other Somerset hero, Ian
Botham, he made a stunning debut, making 123 in 65 minutes in his
first match against Essex, in a dazzling exhibition of stroke
play. He was picked for England the following year, and had a
promising debut against India. He only played two further Tests,
however, with the advent of Hutton and Compton, combined with
selectors who shied away from his adventurous style, limiting his
opportunities. He played the game "vividly, sturdily, and above
all gallantly" (G Moorhouse), his character being shown by
hitting three sixes from an over during which his partner
appealed against the light. An occasional bowler, and a fine
fiedler, he made 50 first-class hundreds, and over 23,000 runs.
Ill-health dogged his final years with Somerset, and his
retirement, and he eventually took his own life (Dave Liverman
1998).
