Profile:

Ray Lindwall was the premier fast medium bowler of the post war era, combining a superb action with genuine pace, and the ability to move the ball both ways in the air. His test career lasted 13 years, although by his final test (in 1959-60) he had lost much of his pace. He was right-arm, and generated considerable speed and hos- tility from a moderate, well balanced run up. As he delivered his right arm was low, rather than classically upright, and he "dragged" his right-foot well over a yard in the course of bowl- ing. He was a complete fast bowler, able to bowl the out swinger, inswinger, seamers, cutters, and a fearsome bouncer, all at high speed. His test career did not start until he was 25, due to the second World War, but he made an immediate impact, and by the time Australia toured England in 1948, his new ball partnership with Keith Miller had developed into one of the best in cricket history. He was also a useful bat, with two test centuries. His sporting talents were such that he excelled in school athletics, and appeared in a first grade Rugby League grand final with St George. His early cricketing promise was as a batsman. On one occasion he scored a double century in a junior match in the morning, and a century in a senior match in the afternoon. Bill O`Reilly saw his bowling potential, however, and persuaded him in that direction. His favourite moment in tests: "I suppose it was in the hotel after removing Trevor Bailey twice for no score in Melbourne. Bailey called the waiter over and ordered roast duck." Former teammate Alan Davidson felt Lindwall`s outswinger was so deadly that he produced deliveries of the ilk of Shane Warne`s famous "Gatting ball" with great regularity. Davidson says he lost count of the number of batsmen he saw playing leg side shots only to find their off stump missing.
