Profile:Born in Sydney, raised in Broken Hill, and now in Adelaide pursuing the dream of a successful first-class career with South Australia, Jeff Vaughan is a fluent middle order batsman. Lightly framed, the South Australian Cricket Association employee is a patient and correct cricketer whose temperament is sound and who plays equally well off the front and back foot. On either side of his move to Adelaide as a 17-year old, he was a star junior player, his sheer weight of runs at schoolboy and club level elevating him into South Australia's under-17 and under-19 teams and later earning him an invitation to join the Australian Cricket Academy's 1997 intake of scholars. Although he enjoyed an outstanding first-class season in 1998-99 - hitting scores of 121 and 157* in successive weeks at one stage - he is, however, yet to nail down a permanent position in South Australia's middle order. This has been a task made more difficult for him by the return to the state team of star batsmen Darren Lehmann and Greg Blewett after their respective stints in the national side, and the emergence of young players like Chris Davies and Shane Deitz. The make-or-break years of Vaughan's interstate career are rapidly approaching. (John Polack, August 2001)© 2001 CricInfo Ltd |
