Profile:Possibly the greatest batsmen South Africa has produced, Graeme Pollock, along with Sobers, was described by Donald Bradman as the best left-hander he had seen. At his best he could make light of the best bowling attacks on difficult wickets - such as during a breathtaking 125 scored out of 160 against a good England attack at Trent Bridge in 1965. Graeme Pollock was an excellent timer of the ball, a powerful cutter, and a magnificent driver. He bowled leg spin effectively at times, and was an excellent fielder. Only playing 23 tests, due to the isolation of South Africa during the apartheid period, he is one of the few players to average over 60 at the highest level. He burst onto the scene with a first class century at 16, and test centuries against Australia at 19. Part of a cricketing family, his father kept wicket for Orange Free State, and his brother, Peter, and now his nephew, Shaun also represented South Africa. In retirement, he owns a bar, is a frequent commentator for the SABC and is sometimes involved with training young South African cricketers.
