Profile:
The untimely death of Raman Lamba on the playing field in a league
match in Dhaka in 1998 is still fresh in public memory. Having moved
up to forward short leg for the last ball of the over, Lamba took a
fatal blow on the head from Mehrab Hossain. It was a disaster waiting
to happen in the days of unhelmeted short leg fieldsmen and an irony
that while the likes of Brian Close went unharmed, the first casualty
had to occur in an era where protective equipment was freely
available.
Lamba was not one to be fettered by the rules laid down in the
coaching manual. He was a master of improvisation and brought a
refreshing unorthodoxy to the batting crease. His sheer exuberance
pepped up his teammates as much as it cowed down his opponents. Lamba
first made people sit up and take notice with a man of the series
performance in a one day series against Australia in 1986. Unable to
keep his place in the team for long, Lamba was impossible to ignore as
he fashioned a series of tall scores in domestic cricket year after
year. A career Ranji record of 6362 runs in 87 matches at an average
of 53.92 speaks volumes for the veritable colossus he was at this
level. Four Tests and 32 ODI's came Lamba's way in the course of a
chequered career but although he showed flashes of brilliance, he
could not turn on the magic consistently enough to merit more than a
minor flirtation with the national colours. Going on the tour to
Pakistan in 1989, it was an injury to Lamba that allowed an out of
form Azharuddin to sneak into the playing eleven after which he never
looked back and Lamba never got a look-in again. Lamba had one blot in
an otherwise blemishless career when he and Rashid Patel were involved
in a disgraceful altercation during a Duleep Trophy match, after which
Lamba was handed a ten month ban by the BCCI. (Sankhya Krishnan)
