Profile:

Phil has been around for so long he is sometimes thought to be an ``old'' man. He is still only in his early 30's, but has been playing since around 1989. Having played for the West Indies in the past as an opener, he could be the ``stand-by'' opener in this group of players selected, though, under normal circumstances, he would probably be batting at No. 6.

Simmons have become, over the recent past, more of a one day player than A Test type player. He is extremely aggressive and because of his stature, about six feet tall and about 175 pounds, the ball normally stays hit when it is hit. The problem with Simmons is that he is normally good for a very aggressive 30 or so, but seldom goes on to greater things.

Simmons greatest asset in the run of things in the present West Indies Team is his very infecteous enthusiasm and optimism. He is probably the biggest cheerleader in West Indies cricket and has a never-say-die attitude. It has even been suggested that he is selected to keep his present captain's feet on the ground, where they need to be, something Simmons does well when playing with Lara for T&T.

While a young Simmons was someone with some sound batting technique, his latter days have suggested a loss of this technique but a belligerence of ``beef''. He simply wants to hit the ball over the top most of the time. Like Carl Hooper, he is caught more at mid-off and mid-on than most established batsmen. This has curtailed his run scoring production immensely.

Simmons bowling is much more useful than just as a change bowler. Especially in one day games, he bowls a great line and length and normally ends the bowling innings because he is so hard to ``slog''.

The all-rounder tag has never fitted better, even if his returns after so many opportunities have never really fulfilled the early promise and these abilities are fully supplemented by an excellence in catching and fielding which is brilliant. If only he could have concentrated more in his youth on longevity at the crease. These days, the mind might be willing to concentrate, but the ability is not entirely there anymore. His inclusion is to lend some experience and all-round skills, with the loss of Hooper. (Colin Croft, March 1999)
