Profile:
Ravindra Pushpakumara, or 'Ravi' as he is known, burst on to the Sri Lankan cricket scene in 1994/5, when he made his test debut against Pakistan at Asgiriya International Stadium. He was to be the quickest bowler in Sri Lanka for some time but was never able to secure a permanent place in the side. Broad shouldered and wide hipped he tears into the crease and bowls with a powerful action. However, he has lacked the necessary variation and general cunning to consistently succeed on the sub continents unrewarding surfaces. Born on the 21stJuly 1975 he was educated at Mahanama Vidyalaya before switching to St John's College, Panadura. He graduated into the national side after touring Singapore and Malaysia with the Under 19 team. He has now played 22 test matches and taken 58 wickets. His last test outing against Pakistan at Galle International Stadium in 2000 was an unsuccessful affair though he still remains in the national squad and is a reserve for the South African tour.(07.12.2000)
