Profile:
A stylish left hander with a penchant for tall scores, WV Raman had an insatiable appetite for runs. He made his debut against the West Indies in his home town of Chennai in 1987-88 and going in at No 3 in the second innings, top scored with a stroke filled 83. He seemed set for bigger things but his career never really took off chiefly because the selectors did not know what to do with him. Desperate for a game, he even offered his services as an opening batsman and enjoyed moderate success. He had a good series against New Zealand in 1990 and scored 96 in the first Test, which remained his highest. His lone international hundred came against South Africa in a ODI at Centurion Park in 1992-93.
Though he had a chequered international career (he went through a whole tour of Sri Lanka in 1993 without playing a single first class game), Raman was a profilic run getter in the domestic circuit. A natural stroke player, he represented Tamil Nadu in 65 Ranji Trophy matches scoring 3958 runs with ten centuries. He struck a purple patch in the 1988-89 season, notching up his personal best of 313 against Goa. He followed it up with two double centuries and ended the season with an aggregate of 1018 runs which surpassed Rusi Modi's 44-year-old record in the national competition. Raman who started out as a left arm spinner, remained handy as a bowler and in fact is one of the few Indian players to have taken a wicket in his first over in Test cricket. In first class cricket, Raman tallied 7819 runs (average 50.12) with 19 hundreds (Natarajan Sriram)
