Profile:
One of the few batsmen of Bangladesh who has real natural strokes in his bat. Shahriar Hossain, more famous as Biddyut, made an auspicious start when he used to play in Narayanganj, his hometown. His dexterity in playing firm and solid knocks square of the wickets caught the eyes of the selectors and soon he was seen in the national squad in the Independent Cup-1997-98 that did not brought him much success. But he did not have to wait much longer to get his first achievement against Kenya which could be the first century for Bangladesh unless he had became the victim of the nervous nineties-made 95. After two matches he went all-out with Mehrab Hossain in record setting partnership in first wicket against Zimbabwe where his contribution was 65. These feats were enough to start off for World cup, 99 and in the match against Pakistan that was epoch-making, he slashed bowlers like Waqer and Shoieb all around the wicket with comfort to notch 39 which played a pivotal role in Bangladesh's victory in that match. His luck did not favor him to take part in the Zimbabwean tour as he surrendered to his dormant injuries, yet, he opened with his compatriot Mehrab in the inaugural test rivaling India.
