Alfred Gilligan, like his brother Arthur, captained Sussex and England albeit briefly, and was a useful all-rounder. He was an opening bat, good field, and useful change bowler. He played only four Tests, captaining England in their first two Tests against New Zealand (Dave Liverman 1998).
