Profile:
Of impeccable pedigree (the nephew of the illustrious Ranji),
"Duleep" showed touches of greatness in a career cut short by
ill-health. His most famous innings was a glorious 173 on his
debut against Australia in the LordÕs Test of 1930, and the same
year hit 333 in a day for Sussex. His batting was stylish and
elegant, with a hint of his UncleÕs influence in his glancing
and driving. He was technically orthodox, with a sound defence,
and attacked with a complete repertoire of strokes, favouring
the back and front foot equally. A superb slip fielder, he was
only an occasional bowler. He captained a strong Sussex team for
two years before his health failed. He was later appointed
Indian High Commissioner to Australia (Dave Liverman, 1998).
