Profile:
Kumar Sangakkara is an elegant top order batsman and wicket keeper, who
burst on to the international scene in July 2000, when he took Romesh
Kaluwitharana's place in both the ODI and Test side. Since then he has
established himself in the Test team at the number three position and after
his first 20 Tests averages 53 having scored four Test hundreds, including a
career best 230 against Pakistan in the 2002 Asian Test Championship final the second highest ever score by a wicket-keeper in Test cricket. He has
also combined this with increasingly adept glovework behind the stumps. Full
of self-esteem and extremely well read (he is a big Oscar Wilde fan), he
continues to study law at Colombo University during rare breaks in the
international cricket calendar. Indeed, for some, he is too quick tongued.
During England's tour of Sri Lanka (Feb-Mar 2001) he attracted the wrath of
the tourists, English media and match referee with his aggressive brand of
cricket. His family comes from Kandy and he was schooled at Trinity College,
where he excelled in a variety of sports to become an all-island champion in
badminton and tennis. In 1997 he joined Nondescripts Cricket Club and was
picked for the Under 19 side against India in the same year. Two years later
he was selected for the A team tour of South Africa (Nov 1999) and Zimbabwe
A tour of Sri Lanka (April 2000). He impressed with a scintillating hundred
in Moratuwa during the one-day games and was selected as a wicket-keeper
batsman for the Singer Series against Pakistan and South Africa (July 2000).
He is yet to establish a permanent place in the one-day team but has now
been promoted up the order and can expect an extended run in the side. He is
already being touted as a future national captain.(30.04.2002)
