Profile:

School cricket is often referred to as the cradle of Sri Lankan, but not in the case of Michael Graydon Vandort, a lanky 21-year-old left hander, who emerged onto the national scene in 2001 after a string of impressive performances for Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) and Sri Lanka A. Vandort only played one game for St Joseph's First XI, in which he incidentally scored a fifty, so he jumped at an opportunity to play for CCC in the third division in 1998/99. He quickly made an impression and was soon promoted into the first team. He made a century on debut against Kurunegala and has not looked back since. Vandort was picked for the Sri Lanka A team's rain affected tour of Kenya (January 2001) and he remained in the side in the three-Test tour against Pakistan A (June 2001), where he impressed the selectors with his concentration and patience. Then, when picked for a Board XI side against India, he booked himself a berth in Sri Lanka's 16-man Test squad after a sparkling first innings century. He sat on the sidelines throughout the entire three-match Test series, but was finally given a chance against Bangladesh in a one-sided Asian Test Championship clash when he batted at number five and scored 36. He is strongest against pace bowling and likes to play off the front foot. He is a superb slip catcher.(20.9.01)
