Profile:
Paras Mhambrey looked to have trespassed onto the wrong stage
when he was blooded into Test cricket in England in 1996. Unable
to exert a semblance of control over the extravagant conditions,
he ended up spraying the red cherry all over and offering a
liberal sprinkling of gift balls in his two appearances.
Mhambrey debuted in the Ranji Trophy in 1993-94 with a bag of
30 wickets at 23.77 apiece, a key element in Bombay's title
triumph. Graduating quickly to the India A side next season
against the visiting England A, Mhambrey impressed further with
a controlled display of seam bowling in conditions that
offered inadequate assistance. He knocked off his maiden first
class century in the 1999-2000 season against Maharashtra but
then suffered the misfortune of missing the entire Super League
through injury. Returning for the final against Hyderabad, Mhambrey
had the satisfaction of being embroiled in his fourth successful
Ranji campaign. With 19 wickets at 17.89 and 324 runs at 64.8,
he showed there is still plenty of cricket left in him and it is
not inconceivable for him to engineer a comeback to the national
side. (Sankhya Krishnan)
