Profile:

After waiting in the wings for over a decade, Dilip Doshi made his Test debut at 32 and for the next three years he was the leading spin bowler in the side, completing his 100th wicket in his 28th Test. However over the next year, he played in only five Tests, was rather expensive and was dropped for good. But Doshi's final Test figures still classify him to be ranked amongst the great Indian bowlers. A left arm spin bowler with a good command over line and length, Doshi also had excellent control over turn and flight. He made his first class debut in 1968 and picked up wickets regularly around the domestic circuit but with Bedi around, Doshi had to bide his time.

It was only after Bedi played his last Test in 1979 that Doshi got his chance. But he made up for lost time picking up 27 wickets in six Tests in his first series against Australia in 1979-80. From then on he was India's spin spearhead and missed only one Test - because of a foot injury - out of 32 since making his debut. Despite his injury, he played a notable part in India's miraculous victory at Melbourne against a strong Australian side in 1980-81 and he was outstanding against England in 1981-82 picking up 22 wickets - the best for either side. He did well in England in 1982 and took eight wickets in the only Test against Sri Lanka in 1982-83. But on the tour of Pakistan in 1982-83, he was hardly given the status of the side's leading spinner and relations soured between him and the captain Sunil Gavaskar. Dropped for the tour of West Indies in 1983, he was back for a single Test against Pakistan in 1983-84 but was discarded thereafter. Towards the end of his career, Doshi switched from Bengal to Saurashtra. He had wide experience of the game in England including first class cricket for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire. His best season was in 1980 when he took 101 wickets for Warwickshire. (Partab Ramchand)
