Profile:

Born in Maldon, Victoria, in 1897, the son of a clergyman, Bill Woodfull was an opening batsman who captained Australia during the early 1930s, including the "Bodyline" series of 1932/3. During that infamous series at Adelaide he told the MCC manager, Pelham Warner: "There are two teams out there, and only one of them is playing cricket."

Woodfull's 35 Test matches yielded a batting average of 46 with a top score of 161, and his record against England was particularly impressive. He scored more than 1,000 runs on each of his three visits at an average of over 50, and won back the Ashes twice, in 1930 and 1934.

Known as "the rock" and "the worm-killer", Woodfull gathered his runs patiently and consistently. He made his highest first-class score of 284 for the Australians against New Zealand at Auckland in 1926/7.

Woodfull led Australia in 25 Tests and was a firm, courageous and understanding captain. He later received the OBE for services to education. In August 1965 Woodfull collapsed and died while playing golf near Tweed Heads in New South Wales.
