Profile:

A gritty determined batsman, and an uncompromising captain, no bowler enjoyed the sight of Ian Chappell walking to the wicket. Sharp reflexes, a good eye and power made him effective against most types of bowling but he was outstanding against pace. He could play attractive, aggressive innings but often concentrated on defence first, making him very hard to dislodge. He tended to play his best innings in the face of adversity. A good hooker of the ball, normally keeping it down, he had a wide range of shots. A superb slip fielder. He was an aggressive, ruthless, but fair, captain who inspired tremendous loyalty among his men, and was rated by Dennis Lillee as the best captain he played under. As captain he won the Ashes back in 1974-75, retained it in 1975, and won a series in West Indies in 1973. He was also a key member of the team which inflicted a 5-1 drubbing on the men from the Carribean in 1975-76 at home. After retirement he has worked as a television and newspaper journalist.
