Profile:

Seven Foster brothers played for Worcestershire in the years before World War 1, but RE (Tip) was the finest cricketer. After a stellar school and University career (Malvern and Oxford), Foster toured Australia in 1903-4, and in his first Test scored a mammoth 287, still the highest innings by an Englishman in Australia. His batting was orthodox, marked by superb cutting and off-drives, and with a sound defence. He captained England against South Africa in 1907 (he also captained the England soccer team, winning 6 caps, the only man to captain England in both sports), but illness and business commitments meant that he played little cricket after this. He died from diabetes shortly before the first World War (Dave Liverman, 1998).
