Profile:

A strapping paceman, Jo Angel has been a favourite among Western Australian cricket supporters for close to a decade now. The genial right armer has never shaped as the most natural of athletes (he has a distinctly lumbering - as opposed to smooth - run in to the wicket) but he has certainly been one of the hardest working and most wholehearted players in Australian first-class ranks over recent years. Until a succession of injuries eventually started to take their toll in the late 1990s, he had proved himself a wonderfully consistent wicket taker, his effectiveness netting him well in excess of 400 wickets for his state and also resulting in seven appearances in the international arena. In the main, Angel's calling card has been his ability to add excellent control to tearaway pace. Ever since the time of his first-class debut in the 1991-92 season, it has been a combination that has allowed him to capture an average of better than four wickets a match and to remain a threat with both the old and the new ball. He bowls with great method and has always illustrated confidence in his ability - a trait perhaps best underlined by the notion that he has never been frightened, even on placid pitches, to make use of his considerable height by dropping deliveries in short. Among many career highlights, a brilliant ten wicket match haul against the touring New Zealanders in 1993-94 shapes as possibly his best all-time performance, but his key contributions toward three winning Sheffield Shield campaigns and two domestic one-day titles do not rate a long way behind in significance. Likewise, a rattling debut spell in Test cricket in Perth in 1992-93 (in which he had Desmond Haynes dropped from his fourth ball and then forced the West Indian opener to retire hurt after he had misjudged a blistering short delivery) will also live long in the memory. More recently, Angel's battles with injury have dimmed some of his fire, but he still preserves the status of a much-valued member of the Warriors' squad. That he remains one of only four players in history to have captured over 300 first-class wickets for Western Australia continues to say a considerable deal about his worth.
