Profile:

Leicestershire have produced a number of top class fast-medium bowlers over the years, and James Ormond is the latest in a long line. A strong, burly right-arm bowler measuring 6' 3" and weighing in the region of 15 stones, he has the priceless ability to swing the ball.

Ormond was born at Walsgrave near Coventry in Warwickshire, but came through the Leicestershire youth teams before making his first-class debut in 1995. He was awarded his cap in 1999.

Ormond represented England at U19 level and went on the England A tour to Kenya and Sri Lanka in 1998 before being chosen for his Test debut at the Oval against Australia in 2001. He bowled a first spell in his usual, fast-medium guise before switching to a secondary role as off-break bowler. It was in his faster mode that he took his first Test wicket, that of Ricky Ponting, held at slip by Michael Atherton who was playing in his last Test.

By no means of negligible ability with the bat, Ormond had to withdraw from England's ODI tour to Zimbabwe through injury in 2001. He had, however, already been selected for the tours to India and New Zealand with the full Test side that followed. During the Indian leg, it was announced that he was leaving Leicestershire to join Surrey, and he proudly displayed his new kit during the first Test at Mohali. He claimed one wicket in that match, but gave way to a spinner thereafter and could not get back into the team.

Whether that new kit he had shown off in India still fitted when he got to New Zealand might be a point for discussion. Certainly the England coach, Duncan Fletcher, was not best pleased by the extra pounds Ormond had added over Christmas and he did not feature in Tests on the second leg of the tour. That was the situation in the summer of 2002 when Ormond took 51 wickets in Surrey's triumphant championship campaign, but his name was not mentioned in international terms.
