Profile:
An off-spinner who bowled at close to medium pace, Appleyard had
a deceptive dipping flight, and great accuracy. With immaculate
length, he was devasting on a wet wicket, and economical on
batsman's pitches. Not making his first class debut until the age
of 27, he took nearly as many wickets as he scored runs. Possibly
the high point of his Test career was the 1954-5 tour of
Australia and NZ where he, not only headed the bowling averages,
but also contributed to a match winning 10th wicket partnership.
Plagued by poor health throughout his career and missing most of the
1952 and 1953 seasons he retired after only 7 years at the top
level (Dave Liverman, 1998).
