Profile:

There is a yawning need for an all-rounder in West Indian cricket, and Ryan Hinds is one of the favourites to answer it. Still only 21, he is a composed left-hander, and orthodox spinner. He is also a brilliant fielder, and developed well on West Indies A tour to England in 2002.

Hinds' talent was spotted early, and he debuted for Barbados in the 1998/99 season while still at school. He took 3/28 in his first Red Stripe Bowl match, and impressed throughout the tournament. He announced himself on the first-class platform with an unbeaten 44 at Bridgetown.

Though he struggled to secure a place in the Barbados team, Hinds captained West Indies at the Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka. Back in the Caribbean, he was beginning to get noticed. His first half-century in the Busta Cup was completed despite a sickening blow to the face, and he continued to score consistently throughout the tournament.

More runs and wickets in the 2001 Red Stripe Bowl earned Hinds a spot on West Indies' 2001/02 tour to Sri Lanka. He hit the winning runs in his first ODI. Sharjah's spinning pitches ensured he was retained for the Test and ODI series with Pakistan. Though he struggled with the ball, Hinds hit a fluent 62 in his first Test innings.

Hinds was appointed Barbados vice-captain for the 2002 Busta Cup, and completed his maiden first-class century in his 31st first-class match against West Indies B. He made little contribution in the subsequent one-day series with New Zealand, but made the West Indies squad for the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy. (Sean Beynon, Copyright CricInfo September 2002)
