Articles about Shane Jurgensen

Profile:

A tall right arm fast bowler, Shane Jurgensen has become renowned for his persistence and his uncompromising line and length. Born and raised in Queensland, Jurgensen moved to Western Australia in 1996 after state and national underage appearances failed to translate into a regular berth in one of the strongest domestic teams in the country. It was in Perth that he took his first steps in carving out a first-class career, making his debut in the tour match against England in 1998-99 and his first foray into interstate competition at senior level when he appeared in a game against South Australia later the same season. But the depth in fast bowling resources in the West, together with an offer from Tasmania, ultimately encouraged him to relocate a second time and - after winning the TCA Medal as Hobart's best grade cricketer in 1999-2000 and carving a niche in the Tigers' first eleven - he has rapidly become one of the island state's most highly regarded pace bowlers. Jurgensen has a straight approach to the wicket; a high, uncomplicated action; and rarely strays from an off stump line. He also impresses with his consistent preparedness to bowl into the wind, to players established in big partnerships, and to generate sustained, economical spells. Together with his spirited batting low in the order, his bowling has become a key factor in Tasmania's resurgence as a power at domestic level. He best showcased this in capping the Tigers' march into the 2001-02 Pura Cup Final when he embedded a hat-trick inside two career-best hauls in the space of a single game against New South Wales. Further powerful evidence of his credentials arrived when he snared match figures of 11/172 to become the first player to attain a ten-wicket haul in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup Final history.
