Profile:
"Nobby" Clark at his best was a brilliant very fast left arm
bowler, who could produce devastating movement off the pitch.
Unfortunately he produced this form at the highest level all too
rarely, as his contracts with the Lancashire League, and a
tendency to be easily discouraged, meant his appearances for
England were limited. After a promising debut in 1929, he
returned to the side in 1934 in the aftermath of the bodyline
series to face the greatest discouragement of all, Bradman. He
played in 1936 against the West Indies, himself employing leg
theory in the Manchester Test. He had no pretensions as a
batsman, and was not a strong fielder. Even up to his retirement
in 1947, he was amongst the fastest bowlers in England for short
spells (Dave Liverman, 1998).
