Profile:

Possibly the best keeper to ever play for India, "Kiri" was also a very useful lower order bat. Quiet and efficient behind the stumps, rather than flashy, he nevertheless executed some brilliant stumpings, and took some memorable diving catches. Having kept to the Indian spin quartet in the mid to late '70s, he then saw the emergence of Kapil Dev and a transition to an attack based more on medium-pace. Kiri was the keeper for most of the most prolific part of Kapil's career. As a batsman, he was unorthodox, but effective, playing several valuable innings in the lower order. One of his two centuries came as a night-watchman, against Australia in 1979-80.

Popular with Indian crowds, later in his career he invariably raised a cheer when he took off his hat to reveal his shaved head. He was recalled to play first class cricket for Karnataka in 1992-93, several years beyond his last Test (Uday Rajan, 1998).
