Profile:

A determined opening batsmen, Laird was noted for his resilience against fast bowling and in particular the formidable West Indian pace attacks of his era.

Laird forged much of this reputation in the late 1970s in Kerry Packer's breakaway World Series Cricket contests, where he played several courageous knocks against top-class West Indian and World XI line-ups. While not flamboyant – he was more likely to leg glance than attempt riskier cross-batted shots – Laird's persistence often wore down attacks and created opportunities for more aggressive middle-order batsmen.

In 1979 he made his official Test debut and defied an attack comprising Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Colin Croft and Joel Garner for five hours in each innings, scoring 92 and 75.

Laird's first-innings effort on debut remained his highest Test score. He did, however, score a century in one-day international cricket and played a handy anchor role in the limited-overs form of the game. (Anthony Fallick, June 2002)
