Profile:

A raw talent when drafted into the Sri Lankan side, Silva was a slow left arm orthodox bowler. Silva was promoted with the hope that with time he could develop into a partner for Muttiah Muralitharan. He was selected for the 1995 tour of New Zealand with minimal first class exposure. With his willingness to flight the ball, and gain turn on responsive wickets he seemed to have a bright future in the Test arena, however his rudimentary batting and fielding skills hindered his progress.

In the lead up to the Test matches he performed with some merit. In the single first class fixture against a New Zealand Academy XI, he captured 5 wickets in each innings, finishing with the match analysis of 10/106. Prevailing conditions ensured Silva was kept on the sidelines for the Test series. He made his international debut in the first one-day international at Christchurch, where he came in for some hefty punishment. On the 1995/96 tour of Australia he impressed taking 5/96 against Queensland troubling the batsman with his subtle variations. A Test debut followed in the second match at Melbourne. It was a miserable test for the Sri Lankans and Silva was forced to toil under difficult circumstances taking 1/120 from 35 overs. At home against Zimbabwe he consistently troubled the batsman having a sterling series capturing 13 wickets at a phenomenal average of 7.69.

Against more accomplished players of spin, with a willingness to use their feet and play through the lines, he struggled to have the same impact and he drifted out of the picture after playing his last Test against Zimbabwe in 1998. With a plethora of left arm slow bowlers in domestic circles Silva's time seems to have passed. (Johann P Jayasekera Sep 1999)
