Profile:

His international career may be just over a year old but Hemang Badani has already made a remarkable impression. An ice-cool temperament under pressure separates him from several of his peers as he revealed in the one-day series against Zimbabwe last December. Badani's unbeaten 58 in the Cuttack run chase, crafted in the face of precarious circumstances, won him a Man of the Match award in just his fourth game. A maiden century off only 97 balls against the Australians at Pune confirmed his rising stature. Badani cut his teeth in the Test arena as a stopgap opener for the injured Sadagoppan Ramesh against Zimbabwe in Harare, lasting six balls. The experiment was discontinued in the second innings and is not likely to be repeated but he remains the first choice to fill any future vacancy in the middle order.

Badani stealthily accumulates his runs without a hint of extravagance, carving the ball around with a touch of elan and discriminating in favour of the gaps. His front foot drive played on the rise through cover is especially pleasing. Badani's occasional orthodox slow left armers and fleet-footedness in the field do no harm at all to his prospects. He made his first class debut against Kerala in the 1996-97 season following a fine showing for India Under-19 against South Africa at home. His maiden call-up to the Indian team for the Asia Cup in May 2000 was not surprising, coming just after two impressive knocks of 162 & 63 in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Mumbai.(Sankhya Krishnan)
