Profile:
The solid foundation on which the Gloucester batting was founded
for many years, Alf Dipper ("Dip" to his team-mates) played only
one test, against the strong Australian side of 1921. An opening
bat, he missed four prime years during the First World War. A
workmanlike bat, with a minimal back-lift, who strongly favoured
the on-side. Grahame Parker described his stance thus:- "angled
slightly to leg, he shuffled ponderously around the crease like
an arthritic penguin". Not a strong fielder, a useful change
bowler, he was the one reliable bat in the Gloucestershire
line-up until the advent of Hammond. A quiet and shy man, after
retirement he became a first-class umpire (Dave Liverman, 1998).
