Profile:

[2000-01 Season] Craig Spearman was recalled to the CLEAR Black Caps for the winter tour of India to bat at no.3 when captain Stephen Fleming declared his intention to drop down to no. 4 in the order. Over the past two seasons Spearman has battled to secure a top order batting position, mostly being preferred for one-day cricket despite a Test average of 33.00. His excellent form in the 1999 Shell Trophy when he averaged 52.62 and led Central Districts to the title, culminated in his call-up. During The National Bank Series v West Indies he opened the batting from the second Test when Horne was injured, and averaged 40.50 across four innings. He was not as successful against the Australians, struggling to average 17 in the three Tests and being dropped from the one-day side for the final two matches after a miserable run. However poor form from a raft of top order batsmen means the door remains open for Spearman to secure a spot this summer.
