Profile:

The nick-name "Lord Ted" referred to his aristocratic bearing and manner, but his batting at its best had a certain nobility. Unusually amongst players of his era, he batted aggressively and with style. Fine bowling brought out the best in him, and his driving off front and back foot sparkled. He was capable of restricting his attack if the situation demanded it, as shown by his match saving 8 hour 173 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1964. He was a very good medium pace bowler, although often injured, and captained both Sussex (his native county although born in Italy) and England. He was a fine fielder everywhere, particularly in the covers, although his concentration was apt to wander. He retired as a player early to pursue his many other interests - he was a superb amateur golfer, dabbled in politics, horse-racing and business. He returned to cricket as England cricket "supremo" in the 1990s but moved onwards after a controversial and difficult period (Dave Liverman, 1998).
