Profile:
Billy "Brocky" Brockwell was a late developer, taking eight
seasons to establish himself in the Surrey side, he was a
stylish and aggressive right handed opener, often partnering
Bobby Abel. He was less successful on the international scene,
failing to keep his place in strong England sides. He was an
effective medium pace bowler, and a good second slip. He was
well educated, and known as a man of fashion and culture, a keen
photographer and writer. He took on winter employment as a coach
in India, by the Maharajah of Pataila, and in South Africa.
After his retirement, he lived well on the proceeds of his
benefit season, but took to drink after the untimely death of
his friend, Tom Richardson in 1912. He became destitute, and
despite an appeal on his behalf in the Sporting Life, spent his
final fifteen years often homeless and living rough (Dave
Liverman, 1998).
