Profile:

An intense, bespectacled right-handed batsman who shares, with legendary Indian batsman Gundappa Viswanath, the rare feat of scoring a century on both first-class debut and Test debut. Chosen for the 1981 Ashes tour after just one season of Sheffield Shield for New South Wales, Wellham had to wait till the Sixth Test at The Oval, and grabbed his opportunity with both hands, scoring 103 in the second innings.

A successful leader who eventually became the first player to captain three states in the Sheffield Shield (later moving to firstly Tasmania then Queensland), Wellham took over the captaincy of the Blues following the retirement of Rick McCosker. In 1984/85 he took New South Wales to their first shield/one-day double, winning both the Sheffield Shield and the McDonald's Cup.

After that initial blaze of glory, Wellham's Test career was intermittent. He was dropped from the Australian side during the 1981/82 season. He was chosen for the 1985 Ashes tour and, like four years earlier, had to wait until the final Test for his chance - though less successful this time. A further recall came briefly in the 1986/87 season.

Wellham's bowling achievements were far and few between, his only first-class wicket being that of Essex wicketkeeper David East on the 1981 Ashes tour of England. (RE, June 2000).
