Profile:

The early part of his career lost to the War, Cliff Gladwin was a seam and swing bowler good enough to play for England 8 times, and to take over 1600 wickets for his native Derbyshire. A tall man, he bowled at a brisk fast-medium, and commanded late inswing, and a useful off-cutter. He has the distinction of being involved in one of the most thrilling of Test match finishes, as he scrambled a leg bye off the last ball of the 1st Test against South Africa in 1948-49 to bring England a 2 wicket win. Really a tail ender who liked to hit, his efforts in a crisis were invaluable to England in that and the 5th Test of the tour life (Dave Liverman 1998).
