Profile:Richie Richardson, like his fellow Antiguan Viv Richards, captained the Leeward Islands and the West Indies. But comparisons end there. Though both were master batsmen, Richards was in a classof his own. While Richards was confident and outgoing, Richardson was quiet and modest; Richards enjoyed great success in English domestic cricket whereas Richardson lasted just half an unhappy season at Yorkshire. A laid-back guitar player, Richardson made an ignominious start to his Test career, bagging a duck in his first Test innings in Bombay in 1983. But success was not far away with centuries coming in his fourth, fifth and eighth Tests, all against Australia. Whether opening the batting or going in at No 3, the runs came consistently with 16 centuries and 27 fifties in a Test career spanning 12 years. He averaged 44 - anything over 40 is a sure sign of a class act - and was just 51 runs short of 6,000 in Tests.Richardson took over the captaincy from Richards for a one-off Test against South Africa in Bridgetown in 1992 - which West Indies won - and went on to captain his country a further 23 times. He led them to series success in Australia in 1992-93, followed by victories against Pakistan and England. He eventually bowed out of Test cricket against England at The Oval in 1995, missing out on a century by seven runs. He also played in 224 One-Day Internationals, hitting five hundreds and 44 fifties. His last ODI was the 1996 World Cup semi-final which the West Indies lost by five runs to Australia, Richardson remaining undefeated on 49 having run out of partners. At a domestic level, Richardson was still going strong in 2000-01 at the age of 39, playing for West Indies B in the Busta International Series. (Graham Holburn, Copyright CricInfo 2001)
