Profile:

A right arm leg spinner from Western Australia who moved to New South Wales to advance his career, Stuart MacGill is a spirited and enthusiastic bowler who makes a reasonably short, straight approach to the wicket and whose repertoire encompasses excellent variation. His trademark delivery is a relatively flat and slightly short leg break which pitches on about the line of the right handed batsman's off stump and turns to finish outside it but he also bowls a nicely aimed top spinner and a flipper which, whilst it does not spin appreciably, is cleverly disguised and rarely ill-directed. MacGill brings a combative and self-assured approach to the game that is not dissimilar to that of his more celebrated compatriot, Shane Warne, and he was preceded by a reputation through the formative stages of his career as being a particularly fiery player. Since his move to Sydney, MacGill has quickly matured into one of New South Wales' most effective contemporary players, and has become one of its all-time leading wicket-takers in both first-class and limited-overs cricket. His international opportunities have, however, proved more limited, primarily as a result of the fact that he has been forced to play second fiddle to Warne on a regular basis. He was nonetheless a star of the Ashes series on home soil in 1998-99, capping a memorable four Tests with a brilliant twelve-wicket haul in the final match of the series in Sydney. Highlights of his career in Australian sides have also included his return of 4/19 on his one-day international debut in 1999-2000 and his return of seven wickets in an innings against West Indies in the SCG Test of 2000-01. MacGill is a third-generation Australian state cricketer, his father and grandfather having both played at Sheffield Shield level for Western Australia. (John Polack, April 2001)
