Profile:An excellent leg break bowler, a useful middle order bat and a thoughtful captain. He was always innovative, as shown by his winning strategy of bowling round the wicket on the final day of the Old Trafford test in 1960, removing the heart of the English batting order. Following in the tradtion of fine Australian leg spinners (Grimmett, Mailey, O'Reilly) Benaud mixed both googlies and leg-breaks and used the top-spinner and flipper well. He disguised his variations, with very little difference in his action for the various deliveries that he bowled. This, combined with his ability to turn the ball and the immaculate line and length made him a superb bowler. His batting was generally aggressive, and a stubborn streak brought out his best in difficult circumstances. A creative and successful captain, after retirement he has become one of the more respected cricket broadcasters.
