Profile:
Ian Salisbury is a rarity, an English leg-spinner, and a
successful one too, at county level. He bowls well-flighted
leg-breaks, has a well disguised googly, and generally maintains
good length and line. Not a big spinner of the ball, he relies on
variation of length and pace. A useful bat with a first-class
hundred to his name, he often contributes runs in the lower
order, without really being considered an all-rounder.
Born in Northampton, he debuted with Sussex in 1989, earning his cap in
1991. His success was rewarded with a Test against
Pakistan, and his first scalp was a notable one, Javed Miandad. He took five
wickets on debut but was unable to produce consistent
performances at the highest level. He played 12 Tests spread
over the next six years, touring India and the West Indies but
failing to make an impact. A move to Surrey in 1997 re-vitalised
his career, and the arrival of Saqlain Mushtaq in 1999 saw the
formation of a very effective spin partnership. Drifting away from the
international scene, he spent his winters honing his craft in
grade cricket in Australia, earning Sydney grade player of the
year in 1999-2000. With the awarding of a central contract to
young leg-spinner Chris Schofield in 2000 it seemed his
international career was over. A superb county season, however,
led to a somewhat surprising recall to the England tour party for
Pakistan in 2000-01. Unfortunately he failed to make any impression on the
Test Series there and was discarded for the 2001 tour of Sri Lanka. (Dave Liverman,
