Profile:

A determined and highly talented batsman, Mike Hussey has built on a distinguished junior record to become one of Western Australia's top contemporary players. A left hander with a full array of front and back foot strokes, his readiness for elite level cricket was confirmed by his third-place finish in the Sheffield Shield Cricketer of the Year award in his first full season at first-class level (1995-96) and he has been scoring valuable runs for the Warriors ever since. In fact, he has been a model of consistency, exceeding the 850 first-class run mark in all but one domestic season thereafter. His form has arguably been even more impressive in the limited-overs arena - where he generally bats in the middle order - with several sparkling innings helping him to become the country's leading domestic one-day run scorer in 2001-02 and the third most prolific in 2000-01. He also carved a niche for himself as one of only four players in state history - and the first from outside New South Wales - to land a six-figure jackpot when he struck a ball into a sponsor's sign in an ING Cup match in February 2002. Hussey's capabilities similarly translated themselves well to an outstanding debut season of county cricket in 2001, when he plundered a record-breaking 2055 first-class runs (including 329 in one innings against Essex) for Northamptonshire. These productive returns have all come on the heels of an accomplished underage career which saw him tour India in 1994 and Pakistan in 1995 (with the national under-19 team and an Australian development squad respectively) and which culminated in his selection as a full-time scholar at the Australian Cricket Academy. Hussey, who complements his batting skills with sharp reflexes in the field and an ability to bowl both leg spin and medium pace on a part-time basis, is a qualified schoolteacher in his life away from cricket.
