Profile:

His rise was meteoric. A hard hitting left hander, Bedade in the early 90s suddenly burst upon the scene with a series of breezy knocks both in the limited overs version and the longer game. He became famous for his sixers and big hitting. As such, he was a popular choice when he was picked in the Indian team for the Australiasia Cup at Sharjah in April 1994. He was not an instant success, but given his swashbuckling approach, he was given a lot of opportunties. He did come off by scoring 44 off 45 balls in the final against Pakistan. However Bedade's batting was less scientific compared to other players known for their breezy batting like Engineer or Srikkanth. He took too many chances and this proved to be his undoing. He did make a splendid 51 against West Indies in the Faridabad ODI in 1994-95 but consistency was never his forte and he was discarded after a few more games. Since his Ranji Trophy debut in 1990-91, Bedade has been one of Baroda's main run getters with a highest score of 159 not out against Punjab in 1993-94. (Partab Ramchand)
