Articles about Ivo Bligh

Profile:

Best remembered for his part in the origin of the Ashes, being the recipient of the original urn from a group of Melbourne ladies (one of whom later became his wife) in 1883, after captaining England to victory and retrieving the trophy lost in 1882. His career was short, ended by ill-health after only 6 years. He was part of the Cambridge University side that defeated the Australians in 1878, and went on to play for Kent until 1883. Bligh was tall, and used his height to effect as a forceful right hand bat with a strong drive, and was a good field at point or in the outfield. After his playing career ended, as Lord Darnley he was much involved in the game as President of Kent and the MCC (Dave Liverman, 1998).
