Profile:
His performances in his two Tests - the first two played - were said
to be far below his normal form, although he was given little
opportunity to display his unusual bowling ability. He combined medium pace
round-arm delivery with slow lobs, the latter earning him 13 wickets
for Yorkshire against Surrey in 1876, and making a great impression
on James Southerton, who thought it was as good example of lob
bowling as he'd ever seen. He was an all rounder, a competent bat,
and excellent fielder. Emigrating to the USA after his retirement, he
died in Chicago (DL, 2000).
