Profile:

A dashing batsman who went after the bowling from his first ball, David Denton was the antithesis of the Yorkshire style of the later 19th century. "A beautiful pair of wrists made his off-side hitting a joy to watch, but he could hook and pull with equal elan on heavy wickets" said HS Altham. His cutting on fast wickets was particularly admired, and he could transform a game by the rapid addition of runs. He was a fine field at third man, and a safe catcher. He played but once for England at home, and toured South Africa twice. After his playing career he became a first-class umpire (Dave Liverman, 1998).
