Profile:
The diminutive, right-handed, wicket-keeper batsman, known fondly as "Kalu",
burst into the international scene by blasting an unbeaten 132 on debut
against Australia during the 1992/3 tour of Sri Lanka. However, after such a
wonderful start he failed to secure his place in the senior side because of
occasional lapses behind the stumps. The selectors experimented instead with
Pubudu Dassanayake, Gamini Wickramasinghe, Ashley de Silva and Chamara
Dunusinghe from 1992-1995, but not one established himself as the regular
keeper. For the crucial 1995/6 tour of Australia they recalled Kaluwitharana
and it turned out to be the turning point of his career. During the
controversial tour Kaluwitharana combined with Sanath Jayasuriya to form a
devastating opening partnership in the Benson and Hedges One-Day Tournament.
He managed only 250 runs in ten innings but the pace with which he scored
them revolutionalised one-day batting. He was the first true pinch hitter.
The 1996 World Cup followed soon after where he and Jayasuriya created a
sensation with their violent assaults in the opening fifteen overs. The
confidence gained from his batting fed into his wicket keeping and he
established a semi-permanent berth in the side. Since then his batting style
has tempered somewhat and he is now capable of playing longer innings.
Nevertheless a 22.24 one-day average remains disappointing after 173 games,
as does a 27.15 Test average, and the emergence of wicket keeper batsman
Kumar Sangakkara threatens his career. He has been dropped from the Test
squad being, but still remains in the ODI squad.(30.04.2002)
