Profile:
Of impeccable pedigree (he is the son of Worcestershire and West Indies
player Ron Headley, and grandson of the great George Headley), Dean Headley
made his Test debut in 1997 after a successful run with the England A side.
Headley made an excellent start to his Test career, immediately
impressing in the 1998-99 Ashes series. His finest hour came in the fourth
Test at Melbourne, when he took a memorable five wickets for nine runs,
which earned him the Man of the Match award and England a famous victory.
Headley debuted with Middlesex, but moved to Kent in 1993. He had a
longish, straight run up, and a classic delivery that allowed him to move
the ball away from the right hander. His greatest strength was the ability
to bowl a consistent line and length, and although not genuinely fast, he
could slip in a troublesome bouncer. He was also a useful lower order
batsman.
Headley's career was cruelly cut short after he sustained a back injury
in April 2000, shortly after becoming one of the first England players to be
awarded a central contract. On medical advice, he announced his retirement
from first class cricket in March 2001. (Copyright CricInfo 2001)
