Articles about Duleep Mendis
Profile:
When the mood struck him Mendis was capable of destroying bowling
attacks with remarkable exhibitions of attacking strokeplay at
any level of the game. A marvelously gifted batsman, Mendis
played a vital role following Sri Lanka's arrival into the Test
arena. After two Tests he took over the mantle of captaincy from
Bandula Warnapura. Considering the circumstances, he performed
admirably leading Sri Lanka to its inaugural Test and series
victory against India.
Already an experienced first-class player when Sri Lanka started
playing Test cricket, Mendis was aged 29 on debut; he initially
struggled to adjust to cricket at the highest level. A half
century against the Australians at Kandy seemed to settle his
nerves and he followed this performance with a striking display
against India in the one off test at Madras. Mendis became the
first Sri Lankan cricketer to make two centuries in a Test
striking a 105 in each innings, in only his 6th Test match.
Injury ruled him out of the Test series in New Zealand and when
the Kiwis toured Sri Lanka he had a miserable time with the bat.
He returned to form with a scintillating display against England
thrilling the Lord's crowd with his strokeplay. Scoring 111 at
nearly a run a ball in the first innings he narrowly failed to
repeat his previous feat of twin centuries scoring 94 in the
second innings. As well as captaining Sri Lanka in its first Test
victory against India he also led from the front with the bat
being the leading run scorer in the series. Unfortunately
following the series he went into a steady decline and his
performances deteriorated culminating with Ranjan Madugalle
replacing him as captain. He went out on a high note personally
scoring 56 in his last Test innings.
In the following years he remained in the public eye managing the
test side for a number of years with distinction.
