Profile:
Donald Smith was a useful all-rounder for Sussex in the post-war period. Debuting in 1946, he was in and out of the county side for a number of years but received his cap in 1950. A steady run scorer, he passed 1000 runs in a season eight times and consistently picked up wickets with his left-arm medium pace. He hit his best form in 1957, at the age of 34, and a string of high scores earned him a trial in the England team against the West Indies. He played three Tests, but failed with the bat, making just 25 runs on four innings and capturing Collie Smith's wicket. 1957 was still a career season for him, as he made over 2000 runs at an average of over 40. He retired in 1962, and subsequently was appointed coach at Lancing School, a position he held for many years (DL, 2002).
