Profile:

The "Coroner", a medical doctor like his more famous younger brother, was an unorthodox batsman and effective lob bowler He started playing top class cricket under his father's captaincy at 13, and toured Australia with Parr's team in 1863-4. He came to prominence by scoring 192* and taking all 10 wickets in an innings for the MCC. Before WG's ascendancy, EM was generally acknowledged as the finest all round cricketer in England. His batting was highly entertaining, often using cross batted shots to straight balls to the frustration of the bowler, and specialising in the "draw" shot, often played under a cocked left leg. He was a superb fielder at point (Dave Liverman, 1998).
