Profile:
William Walter Keeton perhaps was unlucky to play in an era of
superb English opening bats, and played but two Tests in 1934
(called in after Sutcliffe was injured) and 1939. He was unlucky
again in that he hit his best form in 1939, before the 2nd world
war interupted his career. It was in that year he made his
triple hundred, 312* v Middlesex at the Oval. An wristy,
consistent, opening bat with considerable style, and a fine
fielder in the deep, he played 382 matches for Nottinghamshire
between 1926 and 1952. He also also played football for
Sunderland and Notts Forest. He made centuries against every
first-class county apart from his own. EW Swanton wrote of him:"a fine, sound player with an agreeable method, and a beautiful
outfielder".(DL, 1999)
