Profile:Ian Garrity is another local player who has risen through the ranks of ACT junior cricket to be selected in the ACT senior side. He played for the ACT Under 17 side in 1987/88 and in 1988/89 when he was selected as captain. He was then selected in the Under 19's side in 1989/90 and in 1990/91 when he was again selected as captain. A batting allrounder, Garrity has the ability to bat anywhere in the order and is one of the leading run scorers in senior representative cricket for the ACT. His right arm medium pace bowling has the ability to gain a wicket when it is most needed. He is used mainly as a change bowler but he can get through his overs very quickly. He made his ACT senior debut in 1992/93 where he scored 91 in the second innings against the NSW 2nd XI. He has since then become a mainstay of the ACT side and is seen as a future captain of the side. He is currently the vice-captain but has had captaincy experience in leading the ACT at the 1995/96 and 1996/97 Australian Country Championships. He has also been selected for the Australian Country side in 1995/96 where he was vice captain and in 1996/97 where he was selected as the captain against the touring West Indian side. Garrity plays for the Western District side where he has been since 1987 at the age of 14. He was a joint winner of the D.B. Robin Medal for the ACTCA grade cricketer of the year in 1991/92 and won the first grade batting award in 1995/96. (Adam Morehouse, November 1999) |
