Profile:

A teenage prodigy, Ramesh Saxena was a right hand middle order batsman who combined style with technical expertise. A stalwart for Delhi for many years, Saxena made 113 not out on his debut in the Ranji Trophy against Southern Punjab in 1960-61 when he was only 16. Throughout the sixties and seventies, he was a prolific run getter and when he called it a day in the eighties after a stint with Bihar, Saxena finished with 5265 runs in the national competition with 16 hundreds and a highest score of 202 not out against Assam. Saxena toured England with the Indian team in 1967 as a reserve middle order batsman and scored 238 runs (23.80) in first class games. But he played his only Test as an opening batsman. In the first innings he scored nine and in the second, going lower down, got 16. He also toured Australia and New Zealand in 1967-68 with modest success. (Partab Ramchand)
