Profile:

Clem Hill stands among the all-time great left-handers, and was probably the finest produced by Australia prior to World War II. He possessed an advanced technique for his era - especially in his ability to hook fast bowling - and was noted for his power and range of shots.

His most prolific period was between 1897-88 and 1902-03, where he averaged better than 50 in four out of five series. Hill's record of seven centuries would also have been higher, had it not been for an astonishing proportion of dismissals in the 90s. (In 1901-02 against England he gained the dubious distinction of being the first Test player to be dismissed for 99 and, if that were not enough, followed it up with consecutive scores of 98 and 97!) He was also an athletic outfielder who famously caught a shot headed over the fence in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford in 1902, helping Australia to scrape to victory.

Hill captained Australia in two home series, defeating South Africa 4-1 in 1910-11 but losing the Ashes the following summer, by the same margin, to a formidable touring side. His Test career came to a close when he refused to tour England in 1912 due to a dispute over the administration of Australian cricket. However, Hill continued to play Sheffield Shield cricket until 1922-23 - 30 years after his first-class debut. (Anthony Fallick)
