Profile:
For nearly a decade as a player, GS Ramchand served Indian cricket
in various capacities. As an aggressive middle order batsman, as a
medium pace bowler, known for his stamina, accuracy and movement of
the ball under helpful conditions, as a fearless close in fieldsman
and as an able captain. He made his debut on the tour to England in
1952 and till 1960 was more or less a regular member of the side. As a
utility man, Ramchand proved his value to the side time and again with
a series of courageous knocks or a devastating spell with the
ball. Perhaps Ramchand's quintessential performance with the bat was
his 109 against Australia at Bombay in 1956 when he held the innings
together against a strong attack which included Lindwall, Davidson and
Benaud. He also hit a breezy 106 not out earlier in the same year
against New Zealand at Calcutta. With the ball his best performance
was six for 49 in 28 overs against Pakistan at Karachi in 1954-55. On
the tour of England he scored 644 runs in first class matches at
24.76, took 64 wickets (25.85) and held 20 catches for a weak side.
Perhaps Ramchand's greatest contribution to Indian cricket came in
his last series. Appointed as captain as a desperate measure, he led
the side capably against a strong Australian team, captained by Richie
Benaud. Australia won the series 2-1 when the general forecast had
been 4-0 in their favour and Ramchand earned a lot of praise for his
shrewd handling of limited resources. In the Ranji Trophy, Ramchand
was one of the Bombay stalwarts for many years during their halcyon
days and scored 2569 runs (average 75,55) with ten centuries. His
career highest was 230 not out for Bombay against Maharashtra in
1950-51 and his best bowling in an innings was eight for 12 against
Saurashtra in 1959-60. Later Ramchand was a popular manager for Indian
teams. (Partab Ramchand)
