Profile:

Rangana Herath shot to prominence against Australia in 1999 with a 'mystery' ball that darted back into the batsmen. An orthodox left arm spinner by trade, who broke into the side after an impressive A tour to England, he deceived the Australian's in the first few matches before being picked from the hand. Nevertheless, he remains the premier left arm spinner in the country and has toured both Zimbabwe and Pakistan in 1999/2000 with the national side. Since then he has been on the fringes of the Test squad, regularly playing for the A team, most recently during Kenya’s 2002 tour and the Emerging Nations Tournament in Namibia shortly afterwards. He was educated at Maliyadeva College in Kurunegala and thus became only the second spinner from Kurunegala (Ranjith Madurusinghe was the other) to represent the national team. He performed brilliantly at school before moving to Colombo and playing club cricket for Moors Sports Club. Was appointed club captain for the 2002-3 season.
