Profile:
Still the only batsman to make two double centuries in a
first-class match, Arthur Fagg was unlucky not to represent
England more often. After debuting against India he was selected
for the England tour of Australia in 1936-37, but struck down by
illness returned home after playing two Tests. He later had to
turn down an opportunity to tour South Africa. He was an opener,
and relished fast bowling being a particularly effective hooker.
He played strokes all round the wicket but favoured the on-side.
A good slip fielder. In poor health after the war, he took to
coaching but returned to the county side, playing until 1957. He
then became a fine umpire, being on the Test panel for years. He
became increasingly unhappy with the standards of on-field
behaviour, and in 1973 attempted to stand down in mid Test after
a player had openly questioned a decision (Dave Liverman, 1998).
