Profile:
Nuwan Zoysa is one of an impressive new band of fast bowlers emerging in Sri
Lanka. A left arm bowler with a loping, rhythmical run-up and action, he can
extract steep bounce with his great height. He rarely swings the ball, but
does nip the ball off the pitch. He was born in Maharagama, in the suburbs
of Colombo on 13 May 1978. He started off at Buwaneka Central School at
Maharagama, before following his brother, Deepan, also a fast bowler, into
Isipathana College where he developed into a useful all-rounder. In 1995 the
popular Sri Lankan cheerleader, Lionel, spotted the young bowler and
introduced him to the former Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, who
swiftly enrolled him into the Sinhalese Sports Club. He was soon fast
tracked into the national squad and was selected for the 1996/97 tour of New
Zealand, where he made his Test and ODI debut. Since then he has been in and
out of the side because of niggling injuries, although in recent times his
fitness record has improved. His Test record is not particularly
flattering - 38 wickets in 22 games - but he has frequently been forced to
bowl on lifeless, slow pitches at home. The most memorable moment in his
Test career was a hat-trick in his first over of the match against Zimbabwe
at Harare on 26th November 1999. In one-day cricket he has generally proved
more effective, being both economical (av. 4.46 runs per over) and
penetrative in his opening overs.(04.30.2002)
