Profile:
One of the ironies of Eddie Hemmings' career was that when he made his
test debut at the age of 33 he was thought by many critics to be too
old, when in fact he was hardly past the halfway point of his very
lengthy career. Initially signed by Warwickshire as a seam bowler, he
switched to off-breaks in the late 60s. A move to Nottinghamshire in
1979 rejuvenated his career to the extent that international recognition
soon followed. As was the vogue for off-spin bowlers in the 1980s, he
relied on firing the ball into leg stump to combat the effects of
defensive fields and heavy bats. He retired during the 1995 season,
after 29 years as a professional.
