Profile:

Though born in Southend in England, Alan Mullally is Australian-trained and bred and made his first-class debut for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield final. He went on to play Shield cricket for Western Australia between 1987 and 1990 and then for Victoria in 1990/91.

Mullally made his debut for Hampshire in 1988, but that was his only game for the county before he joined Leicestershire where he made his debut in 1990, receiving his county cap three years later. He went on to take more than 400 first-class wickets for Leicestershire, with a best of seven for 55 against Nottinghamshire in 1998 and, though very much a number 11 bat, he does have two first-class fifties to his name.

Mullally left Leicestershire at the end of the 1999 season to return to Hampshire and enjoyed an excellent summer in 2000, picking up 49 wickets in only eight championship matches at an average of just under 17. He also improved on his career-best figures by taking nine for 93 against Derbyshire at Derby - the only wicket he didn't get was Matthew Dowman's, but he had him dropped four times. Mullally finished with match figures of 14 for 188.

Mullally bowls fast left arm, something of a rarity in England, and the different angle of attack combined with the ability to swing and seam the ball has made him an effective wicket-taker. He made his Test debut against India at Edgbaston in 1996 and collected five wickets in the game. He went on to play throughout that three-match series and in all three games against Pakistan later that summer. He toured the following winter to Zimbabwe and New Zealand but was then dropped and did not reappear until the tour of Australia in 1998/99. In his first match back he collected Test-best figures of five for 105 in Brisbane. Mullally went on to play against New Zealand the following summer, and toured the following winter to South Africa and Zimbabwe, though he appeared in only two Tests. He played in five World Cup matches for England in 1999.

Mullally enjoyed a successful summer for Hampshire in 2001, which included an eight-wicket haul against Warwickshire. But the selectors' attention was caught by his figures of 5-18 in Hampshire's defeat of the touring Australians. He was brought into the England side to add some variety to the ailing attack for the Fourth Test, and performed ably enough in picking up two wickets. However, he was dropped for the final Test and failed to win a place on the tours the following winter. (Copyright CricInfo September 2001)
