Profile:
Aged just 21 and having played 10 first-class matches, Richard Dawson
confessed to some surprise when he was selected in England's senior Test
squad for the 2001/2 winter. It was a remarkable turnaround for the
Yorkshire off-spinner, who had the ill-luck to break his hand in the first
game of the 2001 season while doing 12th man duties at Kent. Out of action
for nine weeks, he made a strong case for selection on his return with 30
wickets in nine first-class games, helping Yorkshire to win the CricInfo
Championship, their first success in the tournament since 1968.
Six foot four inches tall, Dawson studied at Exeter University, toured
with England U18s in Bermuda in 1997 and went to New Zealand with the U19
squad the following year. In 1999 he played for England U19s against
Australia in both forms of the game. He has developed both control and
flight, and is seen as a quick learner.
Initially picked to tour India as deputy to Robert Croft, Dawson was left
as England's solitary off-spin specialist when Croft pulled out of the tour
over security concerns. Given his Test debut in the first match of the
series at Mohali, Dawson took 4-134 in 43 overs as India compiled their
match-winning first-innings total of 469. Despite England's defeat, he
impressed observers with a phlegmatic demeanour that also conveyed a sense
of enjoyment. After an indifferent performance in India's first innings at
Ahmedabad, he took two wickets in the second, including that of the maestro
Sachin Tendulkar.
In the event it was Dawson's last Test scalp of the winter. He did not
bowl a ball in the rain-ruined final Test at Bangalore, and was surplus to
requirements in the Test series in New Zealand. However the invaluable
experience he gained in the India series, combined with a further 40
first-class wickets in 2002, ensured selection in the Ashes squad for his
second successive winter in the England party. (Copyright CricInfo October
