Profile:
Born in South Africa, Robin Smith moved to England in his teens
in order to qualify to play international cricket. His
brother Chris also represented England. A very able player of
fast bowling, he has at times experienced difficulty against
good spin bowling, failing in the Tests during the 1992-3 tour of
India (although topping the 1st class averages). His best shot is
the square cut, usually played with authority and force. A
fixture in the England side for 8 years, his 40+ average and 9
Test hundreds (many made in the face of adversity) indicate a
bat of the highest class. After dropping out of England
reckoning following the 1996 World Cup, he has continued to score
runs in domestic cricket. He has captained Hampshire with
considerable success, and retains his position as one of the most
liked and respected cricketers on the county circuit.
