Profile:
With his long, curly, ginger hair, standing 6' 4" and weighing 13 stone,
Ryan Sidebottom is one of the most recognisable figures on the county
circuit. Son of Arnie Sidebottom, who played one Test for England (Third
Test, Trent Bridge against Australia in 1985), and enjoyed a long career at
Yorkshire (alongside a distinguished career as a footballer for Manchester
United and Huddersfield Town amongst others), Ryan soon followed into his
father's footsteps. Born in Huddersfield in January 1978, he made his county
debut for Yorkshire as a left-arm seamer in 1997, having previously
impressed the scouts of Sheffield United Football Club. He toured with
England Under-17 to Holland in 1995 and with MCC to Bangladesh 1999-00 as
well as playing some club cricket for Ringwood in Melbourne, Australia in
1998.
Part of a strong contingent of young fast bowlers at Yorkshire,
Sidebottom barely appeared for the club during the 1998 season, though he
struck his maiden first-class half-century against Glamorgan and took 6-40
in a one-day league game, also against Glamorgan. He took 24 wickets in an
injury-disrupted 1999 season, and won the NBC Denis Compton Award.
Sidebottom gained national prominence when he took 5-27 against Kent at
Headingley, his first five-wicket haul, and followed it up with 6-16 in the
second innings in 2000. He was the leading English-qualified bowler in the
domestic averages that season, earning his county cap in the process, and
finishing with 24 wickets at 12.5 a piece and winning a nomination for the
Cricket Writers' Club Young Cricketer of the Year. He has suffered from
injury problems however, notably a groin strain that robbed him of much of
the 2000 season.
A successful tour of the West Indies with England A helped earn
Sidebottom pole position for a senior spot at the start of the next summer.
He took 16 first-class wickets (the equal best for a seamer on the tour) at
16.81 with a best of 5-31 against Jamaica to earn the man of the match
award. Capable of swinging the ball both ways, he appeared to add a yard of
pace during the tour.
Sidebottom attracted the attention of the England selectors at the start
of the 2001 summer, and made his international debut in the First Test
against Pakistan at Lord's in place of injured teammate Matthew Hoggard.
Although he bowled tidily throughout, he failed to take a wicket and was not
called upon again for the rest of the summer. He went on the short one-day
tour of Zimbabwe that followed, taking the wicket of Stuart Carlisle on his
ODI debut. However he did not make either party to India and New Zealand,
nor did he achieve international recognition in 2002. (Copyright CricInfo
