Profile:

A sound, safe wicketkeeper and a reliable late order batsman, Hindlekar was first choice stumper for the Indian team on the tours of England in 1936 and 1946. He performed commendably particularly on the second tour when because of injuries to his deputy RB Nimbalkar, he had to play in a great majority of the first class games, besides all the three Tests.

Nimbalkar made his debut in the first Test at Lord's in 1936 when he made 26, opening the innings with Vijay Merchant and putting on 62 runs. Ten years later he played another heroic role, this time at No 11 when he and SW Sohoni played out the last 15 minutes to deprive England of victory at Old Trafford. During a first class career that stretched to just over a decade, Hindlekar had a hand in 181 dismissals, 124 of them caught.(Partab Ramchand)
