Profile:
Kaushalya Weeraratne, or 'Kaushi' as his team-mates call him, has been earmarked as Sri Lanka's all-rounder for the future. His bowling is presently stronger than his batting, but he nevertheless has the ability to hit the ball cleanly. He bowls right arm medium fast and is a genuine swing bowler, who can move the ball both ways with just a subtle change in the wrist action.
He was born in Gampola on 29/1/1981. He studied at Trinity College, was a good rugby player, and a fine athlete in his younger days excelling in the Inter-Schools tournaments. Once he decided that cricket would be his future, he concentrated only on cricket and did wonderfully well for his school. In 1999/2000 he won the most prestigious award for a schoolboy, winning "The Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year". Whilst at school he also won the Trinity "Lion", which is the highest sports award in the school.
As a youngster he has represented Sri Lanka U17, on the Hong Kong tour in 1998. In January 2000 he was a key member of the U19 World Cup squad, and based on these performances, he was selected for the national side to the Asia Cup, in April 2000 at Dhaka. He made his debut against Bangladesh in the very first match and then against India bowled extremely well to pick the vital wickets of Sachin Tendulkar, Ajay Jadeja and Robin Singh. Most recently he captained the U19 team that toured England August 2000 and won the Test series.
