Profile:

On the verge of retiring from first-class cricket in order to concentrate on a career in law when South Africa's sporting isolation ended in 1991, Richardson has been a crucial factor in the South African team's success. His unobtrusive and reliable wicket-keeping has been an essential adjunct to the South African pace attack, while his contributions with the bat have often been vital. To the relief of his supporters, he has several times delayed his decision to retire although there have to be limits to how long even so dedicated a player can maintain his physical condition and suppleness. During the first Test against England in 1995/96 he held his 100th catch in his 24th Test, equalling the record of Australia's Wally Grout for reaching 100 dismissals in the fewest tests. It is a commentary on the reliance of pace in the South African attack that Richardson is the only one of 18 wicket-keepers to have reached this landmark without making a stumping. Having played many valuable innings for his country, Richardson reached a pinnacle during the series against New Zealand in 1994/95 when he scored 247 runs at an average of 82.33. Having made 93 in the first Test at the Wanderers, he reached his maiden Test century 2 matches later at Newlands. A broken finger suffered during the 6th limited-overs international against England in 1996 meant Richardson would not play in the World cup but he returned to be part of the winning effort in Sharjah.
