Profile:
A star batsman at Cambridge University, John Dewes played in the
Victory Tests in 1946, and debuted for England in 1948. He was
unable to match his county form at the Test level, and faded
from the county scene (apart from an Indian summer of 644 in 7
matches in 1955), becoming a school-teacher in England and
Australia. A left-hander, his batting was based on solid
defence, and he was an excellent outfield (Dave Liverman, 1998).
