Profile:His hero is Allan Donald, but it's difficult not see at least a trace of Michael Holding in Mfuneko Ngam, the Eastern Province Express who made his Test debut against New Zealand as a 21-year-old in December 2000. Put simply, "Chew" Ngam is a completely natural fast bowler with a smooth run-up and enough pace to make the best batsmen hop around. Ngam has been carefully groomed for the top level in Port Elizabeth and much of the credit must go to EP coach Adrian Birrell who made sure that he wasn't pushed too far too quickly. The young man is living proof that the United Cricket Board's development programme is more than just a public relations exercise. It is too early to tell how far Ngam might go, but he has pace, he has control and he is a good learner. If he is representative of the post-Donald generation of fast bowlers, then South Africa's future in this department should be well served. Peter Robinson December 2000
