Articles about Chris Broad
Profile:
If Chris Broad had been a less confrontational character, he could have
played 100 matches for England. An imposing opening batsman with a very
upright stance, of his contemporaries only Gooch was a better player of
pace bowling. After his superb tour of Australia in 86-87 it looked as
though he would be a permanent fixture in the England side. However, he
pressed the self-destruct button when he refused to leave the crease
when given out against Pakistan in Lahore, and he compounded this a
month later when he smashed down his stumps in the Bicentenary Test at
Sydney. In 1989 he was dropped for mouthing an obscenity after being
given out lbw at Lord's. Disillusioned with the TCCB, he opted to join
Mike Gatting's rebels.
