Profile:

India's chronic inability to discover a pair of durable, specialist Test openers appeared to have been half solved by the arrival of Shiv Sunder Das. The 23-year-old showcased his potent combination of sound technique and serene temperament to good effect in Zimbabwe where he produced three 50s in four knocks and was deservingly named Man of the Series. Only the second player from Orissa to win a Test call-up, the pint-sized lad scored a polished 110 in his third game, against Zimbabwe in Nagpur last November. Das showed growing evidence of his mettle against Australia in the series decider at Chennai, collecting a fluent 84 and repeatedly sweeping the spinners with panache. He then followed up his success at home with a tour of Zimbabwe that saw him outshine his teammates with sheer consistency. In the tour of Sri Lanka that ensued, it was once again Das who impressed with solid starts at the top of the order. The South African tour too proved that the young man has the technique and temperament to succeed anywhere. A strong showing in the home series' against England and Zimbabwe only served to reiterate his abilities, but the shocking run of failures in the West Indies has suddenly put him under pressure. Now, he has prove himself all over again in the Test series at the Old Blighty.

A former India Under-17 captain, Das journeyed through the junior ranks with distinction. Although he made 98 on his first-class debut as a 16-year-old in the 1993-94 Ranji Trophy pre-quarters, he was no overnight prodigy, honing his abilities took several seasons of domestic cricket.

His big break came in May 2000 when he was selected to the National Cricket Academy and got the chance to interact closely with his idol Sunil Gavaskar. In June, Das visited the Australian Cricket Academy under the Gavaskar-Border scholarship, which he believes was the best thing that happened to him. The intensive six week course instilled a sense of professionalism in Das. His technique was tightened and his preferred backfoot play refined, especially cutting and pulling. Das also has ample opportunity now to sharpen his leadership skills, taking over as East Zone captain last season in addition to his duties as captain of Orissa.(Sankhya Krishnan)
