Profile:One of the remarkable success stories of South African cricket, Symcox was not even a member of the Natal provincial squad in the season before he made his international debut at the age of 33. Before that he had played much of his cricket in the relative anonymity of the Bowl competition. Yet he became a fixture in the National squad, primarily for his ability as limited-overs player. A tall off-spinner, he maintained an exceptional economy rate of just over 3.5 runs an over in international matches. His ability to generate bounce and turn and his highly competitive nature made him a formidable opponent. Symcox worked hard on his fitness and agility in order to keep up with his younger colleagues in the field. His determination to stop everything within reach and hard, flat throw surprised more than one batsman running between the wickets. At the start of his career, Symcox was an opening batsman. He is a fierce striker of the ball and in a successful experiment he was used as a top-order "pinch-hitter" in Sharjah at the end of the 1995/96 season. He announced his retirement from international cricket in March 1999. (adapted from the UCBSA tour brochure 1996-97).
