Profile:

A tower of strength to Bombay cricket during their peak period in the fifties and sixties, MS Hardikar was a genuine all rounder - a courageous middle order batsman and an accurate off break bowler. During a first class career which lasted a little over a decade, Hardikar, who played in spectacles, scored 3602 runs (45.59) with eight centuries and took 74 wickets (31.66). In the Ranji Trophy alone he scored 2589 runs (50.76). His highest score was 207 not out against Services in 1964-65 and also hit 204 against Gujarat in 1956-57.

Unfortunately his record in Tests was very limited. He played just two matches against West Indies in 1958-59. Making his debut in his home town, Hardikar took his first - and only - Test wicket with his third ball, having Rohan Kanhai leg before. In the second innings he scored 32 not out and put on 85 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket with GS Ramchand to help India earn an honourable draw. He did not have a very successful Test in the following game at Kanpur, was discarded and not picked again. (Partab Ramchand)
