Profile:
Immortalized as the inventor of the googly or "Bosie", Bosanquet
was a fine all-rounder with 21 first class centuries to his
name. Originally a fast-medium bowler of some ability, he
developed the googly after noting its deceptive spin in
experiments. He practiced the ball for two years before bowling
it in a game, overcoming the difficulties of control and
accuracy, and toured New Zealand in 1902-3. The team played
against an Australian XI on their way home, and Bosanquet
cleaned bowled Trumper with a googly with his first delivery on
Australian soil. His Test career was brief, but he was
instrumental in two defeats of Australia, with 6 wickets in the
decisive Test of the 1903-4 tour, and 8-107 at Trent Bridge the
following summer. The same summer he scored two centuries and
took 11 wickets for Middlesex against Sussex. As a batsman his
technique was unusual with a very short backlift and with a
style described by Altham as "rough and unattractive". He had
great strength in his arms and few contemporaries hit harder. He
in effect dropped out of the game after 1905, playing only
occasionally, but his legacy, the googly, dominated the game for
the next 10 years, and remains with us today (Dave Liverman,
1998).
