Profile:

Kalutura born Marvan Samson Atapattu, a pupil of Ananda College and a quiet, unassuming man, is right-handed opening batsman. An accomplished technician and a natural grafter, he has become an important cornerstone of the Sri Lankan batting, providing a necessary counterbalance to the side's more flambuoyant strokeplayers. But the early days were tough with five ducks in his first six innings after making his Test debut in 1990/1. His confidence shattered, he dropped out of the reckoning before returning again in 1997. Since then he has settled and scored runs consistently. In Tests he prefers to open the innings, whereas in ODIs in usually bats at number three, although he may open in both forms of the game shortly. He can be nervous starter, recording a high number of ducks in Test cricket (18 in 96 innings), but possesses great powers of concentration once settled and has an appetite for big scores. He has converted five out of his eight Test hundreds into double tons, a feat surpassed only by Sir Don Bradman (12), Wally Hammond (7) and Javed Minandad (6). A balanced batsmen, with precise footwork, he is Sri Lanka's best player of spin. In 2000 he took over the vice captaincy of the Sri Lanka side from Mahela Jayawardene.(30.04.2002)
