Profile:
In a short career spanning seven Tests, Shinde had one really
fine performance when he took six for 91 off 35.3 overs in
England's first innings at New Delhi in 1951-52. His mixture of
leg spinners and googlies puzzled most of the batsmen. But in his
other Tests, he was less successful. Also his manner of bowling
meant that he tended to be expensive, which explains his career
average of nearly 60. Tall and rather frail in appearance, Shinde toured England in 1946 and 1952 and also played at home against
West Indies in 1948-49, besides the series against England. He
died suddenly following an attack of typhoid. The illness cut
short his first class career during which he claimed 230
wickets (32.59). (Partab Ramchand)
