Profile:
Gavin Hamilton is a useful all-rounder has represented
both his native Scotland and England at the top level. Born in
Scotland, he was educated in Kent, and has played cricket for
Yorkshire since 1994, earning his cap and player of the year in
1998. He spent the winter of 1998-99 playing grade cricket in
Australia. A tall right-arm fast-medium bowler, and more than
useful lower order left-hand bat he came to public attention in
the 1999 World Cup. Playing for Scotland, he showed that he had a
flair for the big occasion, making two fifties, and bowling
usefully against top class opposition. He followed up the World
Cup with a superb season for Yorkshire, averaging over 50 with
the bat and under 20 with the ball in first-class cricket (his
career batting average was under 25 at the start of the season).
In the reckoning for an England place all summer, he was selected
to tour South Africa in 1999-2000. He made his Test debut but, after a
miserable introduction to top-level cricket, was largely ignored for the
rest of the tour, failing to get a game in the one day series that followed.
Still to make a first-class
century, his bowling will have to be at its best to justify a
place as a genuine all-rounder (DL 2000).
