Profile:

Dean Jones was a talented strokemaker whose aggressive approach helped him to become one of Australia's most successful one-day players.

In limited-overs matches the overriding intent of Jones - who typically came to the crease at the fall of the first wicket - was to counter-attack. He pinched quick singles, while swift footwork allowed him to come down the pitch to both spinners and medium-pacers. Jones' drives straight of the wicket and through mid-wicket were a particular strength. His seven ODI centuries included 145 against England in 1990-91, which for several years remained the highest limited-overs score by an Australian.

Jones' strengths offered him the greater advantage in one-day cricket, but he was also a competent Test batsman. In the First Test of the 1986-87 tour of India, a dehydrated Jones played undoubtedly his bravest innings, battling nausea and delirium to score a double-century. His efforts left him hospitalised, although he returned to play in what became the second-ever tied Test. (Anthony Fallick)
