Profile:

He played his initial first class match as a military cadet for Services against West Indies in the opening fixture of the 1958-59 tour and made it memorable by getting 35 and 100 not out. In the same season, in his first Ranji Trophy match, he took six for 32 against Delhi with his leg break-googly bowling. But Sengupta's career faltered after this encouraging start. Based on the promise he held out, he was played as opening batsman in the Madras Test against West Indies the same season. But he failed getting one and eight and that remained the extent of his Test career. In a decade long first class career, Sengupta scored 1695 runs (26.48) with two centuries and took 21 wickets (31.14). (Partab Ramchand)
