Articles about Syed Abid Ali

Profile:

He was perhaps born 20 years too soon for there is little doubt that he would have been ideal for one day cricket. His ubiquitious qualities - a hard hitting middle order batsman, a medium pace bowler known for his stamina and considerable movement in helpful conditions and a brilliant close in fieldsman - would have made him an automatic selection for the limited overs game. In a career which lasted from 1967 to 1975 Abid Ali served Indian cricket most selflessly. A fighter to the core, he was almost always in the thick of battle, either playing the rescue act with the bat or by taking some quick wickets. With the bat his best game was the Test against Australia at Sydney in 1967-68 - his debut series - when he top scored with 78 and 81 in a losing cause. On his debut at Brisbane, he took six for 55 in the first Australian innings but perhaps his best performance with the ball was his spell on the first morning of the Test against England at Old Trafford in 1971. He dismissed Jameson, Edrich, Fletcher and D'Oliveira for 15 runs as England slumped to 41 for four. He had the signal honour of hitting the winning boundary that heralded India's historic triumph at the Oval in 1971. Even as late as 1974, he was doing the rescue act when he scored 71 at No 9 against England at Old Trafford. His career in one day cricket was limited but even in that short stint he had one notable innings when he top scored with 70 against New Zealand in the 1975 World Cup.

A fitness fanatic, Abid Ali was a pillar of strength to Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy for about 20 years. In retirement, Abid Ali spent much time coaching in California before news came through in the 90s that his health was deteriorating. In the mid 90s he was reported to have `died' and some news agency reports put out an obituary and his `death' was even reported by one of his former colleagues over TV. Happily news of his demise proved to be premature. (Partab Ramchand)
