Profile:
An extremely hard-hitting opening batsman, Wayne Larkins had the
misfortune to be given his main England chance when he was past his
prime. Though he played a few games in 1979 and 1980, he was by no means
a fixture in the team when he went on the first Rebel tour to South
Africa. Many people thought the resultant three year ban had ended his
international career. It was somewhat ironic that it was Mike Gatting's
second rebel tour in 1989 that brought about his return to the test
team. With players such as Broad, Robinson and Athey in South Africa,
the England captain Graham Gooch personally chose Larkins as the player
he felt most comfortable opening the innings with. He had limited
success however, and many people were surprised when he was again
selected for the following season's tour to Australia, where again he
did not do himself justice.
