Profile:
Boycott was a great accumulator of runs in English cricket for 15 years, both
for Yorkshire and England. He was a controversial figure, misunderstood by many,
and often accused of playing selfishly. As a bat, he was capable of playing
most strokes, but emphasized defence, often scoring slowly and taking on a sheet
anchor role. He was dropped by England following his highest test innings of
246*, due to slow scoring in the initial stages of the innings. Despite this he
played many match saving or winning innings, and was the best English batsman of
his generation. His strongest shot was a placement of the ball off the back foot
through the covers, but was also a good driver, and was strong off his legs. At
times he dabbled with the hook shot, but it was never a strength. His running
between the wickets was at times poor. He worked hard to make himself a sound
fielder, and occasionally bowled medium paced in-swingers. He captained
Yorkshire for a few seasons, and England three times. In retirement he has
become a well-known broadcaster.
