Profile:

Chamara Silva has forced his way back into the senior squad after 18-months on the sidelines. A slightly built man he is an industrious right-handed batsman, who has inherited Aravinda de Silva's slightly bow legged stance, and bowls occasional leg-breaks. He is also brilliant fielder, especially in the inner circle. He hails from Panadura where he was born, schooled and now captains the Panadura Sports Club. He excelled as captain of Royal College (Panadura) and was selected for the Under 19 squad for the 1998 Youth World Cup in South Africa. He was then selected for the 1999 'A' tour to England and after the 1999 World Cup debacle, when the national selectors initiated their youth policy, he was inducted into the national squad for the Aiwa series against Australia and India. He scored a classy 54 on his debut against McGrath, Warne and co. After the debut he became a full member of the squad in Sharjah (October 1999), Zimbabwe (November 1999) and Pakistan (March 2000). However, he has never secured a regular place in the side, nor has been given an extended opportunity in the senior side and therefore remains a talent unfulfilled. (20.9.01)
