Profile:

Throughout his career Devon Malcolm has been regarded as an enigma, both on the county circuit and at Test level. At times capable of bowling with hostility, pace and accuracy, Malcolm has too frequently lacked the consistency that would have gained him far more than his 40 caps. Born in Jamaica, Malcolm began his career in England with Derbyshire where he came to the attention of the national selectors. His international debut was inauspicious, finishing with 1/166 as Australia won by an innings at Trent Bridge in 1989, but he went on the West Indies tour the following winter and acquitted himself well, finishing as top wicket taker with 19, including a Test career best of 10/137 in Port of Spain. His career highlight came in 1994 at The Oval where, having been hit on the head by Fannie DeVilliers, he memorably said "you guys are history." He then unleashed an irresistible spell of fast bowling to obliterate the South African second innings with 9/57, the sixth best Test return of all time. He is immensely proud of the fact that during a game in Soweto, he met Nelson Mandela who called him the Black Destroyer. He is one of the game's most renowned rabbits, averaging a fraction over six in the Test arena. He left Derbyshire for Northants, and Leicestershire surprised a few people by signing him for 2001 at the age of 37 (GH, 2000).
