Profile:

Confident, aggressive, and blessed with great potential, Ryan Campbell is an explosive batsman and wicketkeeper who hails from Western Australia. Although consistency has eluded him at times, there are few players at Australian interstate level as destructive with the bat as the right handed Campbell. He has a fine eye and hits the ball magnificently off both the back and front foot and to all parts of the wicket. Campbell was introduced to the Western Australian team as a replacement wicketkeeper for international player Adam Gilchrist but quickly carved a niche for himself as a specialist batsman. His breezy shotmaking made him seem naturally suited to a role as a one-day opener and he also filled that position in first-class cricket for a considerable period, especially after he had registered both the fastest half-century and century in the course of the one Australian first-class season - in 1996-97. Increasing international appearances for Gilchrist over recent years have resulted in Campbell's return (on an intermittent basis, at least) to the 'keeping role but it has generally been for his ability to set the side away to flying starts at the top of the order for which he has remained best known. Among many belligerent innings for the Warriors, arguably the most noteworthy was a whirlwind 108 (off only 85 balls) that laid the foundation for his team's dramatic victory over Queensland in the 1999-2000 Mercantile Mutual Cup Final. He endured a difficult 2000-01 season following knee surgery and reportedly closely considered an offer to move to Victoria upon its conclusion. But he has elected to stay in Perth and remains a key part of the Western Australian squad. In the past, his talents have also seen him included in Australia 'A' sides and he continues to be touted in some circles as a likely future success story at one-day international level.
