Profile:
"Tich" Freeman was probably the most effective bowler ever in
county cricket, year after year enticing slow footed batsmen to
their doom with his beautifully flighted slow leg breaks.
"Stumped Ames bowled Freeman" appears many times in the Kent
scorebook in the 1920s and 30s. His 304 wickets in 1928 will
probably remain the record for an English first-class season (he
took 298 in 1933, and over 250 in 6 seasons in all). In Tests,
however, he had less success, particularly against Australia. The
Australians were adept at the quick footwork required to
counter-act his flight and spin. Against less skilled batsmen,
however, he was deadly. A small "gnome-like" man, he bowled off 5
paces with a quick, economical action, had excellent control of
leg break, top spinner and googly (of which he bowled two types),
with considerable spin. He took 10 wickets in a innings in three
consecutive years, the only bowler to have achieved this feat
thrice. He holds the less illustrious record of conceding 331
runs in a match, for Kent against the MCC in 1934 (he did take 8
wickets). He also holds the record for most runs conceded in a
season (5489 in 1928), and most balls bowled in a season (12,234
in 1933). Few have bowled as much, and as consistently well, for
so long (Dave Liverman, 1998).
