Profile:

It's a tough act to follow when your mum's favourite cricketer is Neil Harvey and she names you after him - but that was the dubious legacy left for N H Fairbrother. He was never likely to emulate the Australian legend but he has proved successful in his own right, particularly in the one-day game. With remarkable hand-eye co-ordination and the ability to find gaps in any field, he has always been able to keep scoreboards ticking over.

Fairbrother made his debut for Lancashire in 1982, receiving his county cap three years later. He has enjoyed unparalleled limited overs success with the Red Rose county, appearing in ten finals at Lord's, finishing on the winning side seven times. But to label Fairbrother as purely a one-day specialist would be unfair. In first-class matches he averages more than 40 and has a highest score of 366 against Surrey at The Oval in 1990. That knock was the third highest County Championship score ever made, the second highest first-class score by a Lancashire player and the highest ever at The Oval. He was made Lancashire captain for 1992 but resigned after the following season. His county performances brought him to the attention of the England selectors in 1987. His Test career started with a duck on his home ground of Old Trafford against Pakistan and ended ten matches and 219 runs later, at a disappointing average of 15.64. He was never given another chance after a tour to India and Sri Lanka in 1992-93, despite regularly hitting big scores for England in one-day games. He has accumulated more than 2,000 runs and averages close to 40 - a particularly high tally in the one-day game. He featured in the 1992 World Cup final defeat against Pakistan, top-scoring with 62, and played for his country in the next two World Cup competitions. (Graham Holburn, Copyright CricInfo 2001)
