Profile:
A stalwart opening batsman for Warwickshire and England, Dennis
Amiss made his first class debut at the age of 17, and Test debut at 23. He
had trouble establishing himself in the England side and it was
not until his 13th test that he reached the three figure mark, in
1972-73. A technically sound batsman, strong off his legs, and
with a fine cover drive, he was renowned for his powers of
concentration, as best shown by his match saving 262* at Sabina
Park in 1973-74. He made another remarkable double hundred in
1976, withstanding the fiery Michael Holding at his fastest. A
right hand bat, he bowled left arm seam until back problems
prevented further bowling. His Test career ended when he joined
the Packer "circus" in 1977, but he continued for another decade
in county cricket, achieving a hundred first class centuries in
1986 (Dave Liverman, 1998).
