Profile:

Born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) in 1948, Duncan Fletcher was a pioneer of Zimbabwean international cricket and subsequently became one of the most respected coaches in world cricket.

Although he was never able to score a first-class century (93 against Young New Zealand at Bulawayo in 1984/85 was his highest), Fletcher was a consistent, determined left-handed batsman (average 23.68), and right-arm fast-medium seamer (average 28.03). He played first-class cricket from 1969 to 1985, representing Old Hararians and Mashonaland in Zimbabwean domestic cricket. He was also a superb and versatile fielder. His retirement preceded Zimbabwe's introduction to Test cricket.

Fletcher's finest hour, as a player, came when captaining Zimbabwe in their first ever One-Day International in the 1983 World Cup. He scored 69 not out and took 4-42 to take the man of the match award as Zimbabwe beat Australia by 13 runs.

Having immigrated to South Africa, he worked successfully for Western Province as Director of Cricket. He coached Glamorgan to the County Championship in 1997, attracting the attention of the English and Wales Cricket Board when they searched for a new England coach. Fletcher was offered the job after the World Cup debacle of 1999, but illustrated his loyalty by seeing out the season with Glamorgan.

In marked contrast to his predecessor (David Lloyd), Fletcher was happy to remain in the background, keeping his distance from the press. His relationship with England captain, Nasser Hussain, soon turned around the fortunes of an ailing England team. Their first series together saw defeat in South Africa, but as the pair learned about the personnel at their disposal, results improved markedly as England beat the West Indies at home and Pakistan away for the first time in a generation.

Fletcher demonstrated a welcome ability to spot, and then work with, potential. A policy of consistent selection was followed, and a clear team spirit grew within the English squad. He was also partly responsible for the adoption of the central contract system by the ECB, under which top international players could be rested from county cricket at the England coach's discretion.
