Profile:Yet another product of Bloemfontein's Grey College - in recent years South Africa's most prolific source of international cricketers - Boeta Dippenaar is on the threshold of what promises to be a rewarding career. Still a schoolboy when he made his maiden 50 on first-class debut against Michael Atherton's England tourists in 1995/96 and three seasons later he became only the 18th South Africa to total more than 1 000 runs in a domestic season. Indeed, only five players - Barry Richards, Graeme Pollock, Jimmy Cook, Hylton Ackerman and Peter Kirsten - have bettered his 1 070 runs. He is in exalted company. Dippenaar played two Tests as an opening bat against Zimbabwe at the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, but lost his place in the side when Gary Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs returned from injury. He was a late call-up for South Africa's tour of Sri Lanka this year when Gibbs was withdrawn from the team. (Peter Robinson July 2000)
