Profile:
Chris Schofield is a rarity in English cricket, a home grown
leg-spinner. Born in Rochdale he attracted attention at a
comparatively young age with his ability to spin the ball. Tall,
with a whippy, somewhat uncontrolled action, he bowls fastish
wrist-spin, with considerable variety in length, direction and
spin. He is a useful lower order bat - he opened for Ringwood,
the Melbourne club that he played for during the winter of
1997-98. During that winter he was asked to attend the England
touring team's net practice to provide them with practice
against wrist spin. He debuted for his native Lancashire in 1998,
picking up 10 wickets in 2 matches. His progress to a regular
place in the Lancashire team seemed halted when Muralitharan was
signed, but he made the most of the opportunities offered to him
on the helpful wickets of Old Trafford. His good season was
rewarded with a place on the England A squad to tour Bangladesh
and New Zealand in 1999-2000.
He was awarded a Test contract for the 2000 season before making his Test
debut, a recognition by the England management that he has a bright future
ahead of him.
He has shown he can trouble the best on the
English county scene but it remains to be seen if he can improve
his accuracy and consistency in order to be effective at the
highest level. (DL and Chris P, Mar 2000)
