Profile:
Tillakaratne recently completed a remarkable comeback into the Sri Lankan
Test team having been axed in favour of youth after the 1999 World Cup, when
he played in just one game and had reputedly been at odds with captain
Arjuna Ranatunga. Since rising to prominence with a century against England
B at Galle in 1986 as a schoolboy, however, he had been known as a gutsy
cricketer and a tenacious middle order batsman, whose steady accumulation of
runs provided a useful counterpoint to Sri Lanka's dynamic top order in the
mid to late 1990's. He also kept wicket during his early years, but stopped
in 1994. Having been discarded he refused to retire like his colleague
Roshan Mahanama and went to play club cricket in Bangladesh. In 2000/01 he
then led his domestic team, Nonedescripts Cricket Club, to the Premier
League title and topped the first class batting averages in the process.
With Ranatunga having retired and Aravinda de Silva losing interest Sri
Lanka turned back to the left-hander in the hope that he could stabilise an
occasionally frenetic middle order. He failed in the first two Tests against
India, but finally delivered in the final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club,
resurrecting his career with his seventh Test century. Against the West
Indies and Zimbabwe he went on a run spree, scoring a further two hundreds,
including a marathon 204*. Although 34 years old he remains remarkably agile
in the field and his work-rate is extremely high leaving him with an
opportunity to play on for the foreseeable future. He is, however, not
expected to play in the one-day side.(30.04.2002)
