Profile:

Prasanna Jayawardene has remained on the fringes of the national side for two years now. His prowess with the gloves is not doubted and he is recognised as the premier wicket keeper in the country. However, in this day and age the wicket keepers are required to contribute consistently with the bat. Prasanna Jayawardene, though solid in style and determined in his approach, is considered to be a lesser batsman than Kaluwitharana, Lanka de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara. However, in 2000/01 he has started to score runs in the domestic competition. He was educated at St Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and played from Under 15 to Under 19 level as a wicket keeper batsman. Following his impressive schools performances he was selected for the Sri Lankan U19 squad that participated in the U19 World Cup in South Africa, 1998. He did very well behind the stumps in the whole tournament and was selected as the "Best Wicket-keeper" in the tournament. On his return to Sri Lanka he was selected as vice captain for the Under 19 tour to India in 1999. In 1998 in traveled to England with the national team and in 1999 in returned with the 'A' team. Unfortunately, when the time finally came for him to be awarded his first test cap, in the third test against Pakistan at Asgiriya International Stadium in July 2000, rain prevented him from keeping wicket. He plays his club cricket for Sinhalese Sports Club, having just moved from Sebastianities
