Profile:
John Emburey was an off spin bowler of considerable class, with
a lovely effortless delivery, and a looping flight. His run up
was of a few paces, and his front foot landed almost in line
with the stumps in the delivery stride, resulting in the ball
being bowled wicket to wicket. He could spin the ball
effectively but took many wickets with his "arm" ball, that
drifted away from the bat. His natural attacking style often
took second place to the necessity of containment required by
limited overs cricket. He was a determined lower order bat whose
idiosyncratic style became more effective through his career,
memorably so in 1993 when he showed he was a true all-rounder.
Despite eyesight difficulties he continued as a Test and first
class players into his 40s, his final year being with
Northamptonshire as player coach. He was an effective fielder,
particularly in the gulley (Dave Liverman, 1998).
