Profile:
Ashantha de Mel was Sri Lanka's leading pace bowler following its
inception into the test arena. De Mel was a brisk right arm
bowler with the ability to gain genuine outswings. A consistent
wickettaker, despite being quite expensive at test level. In Sri
Lanka's inaugural test against England de Mel took a highly
creditable 4/70 and 1/33, capturing the England top order. In the
proceeding tour to Pakistan he toiled willingly, earning 11
wickets in Sri Lanka's initial test tour. In the one off test
against India in 1982/83, he became the first Sri Lankan pace
bowler to take a five wicket haul in tests, taking 5/68 in the
second innings. With the bat in hand de Mel was a handy
performer, capable of valuable contributions in the lower order
with his aggressive style. After the debacle in the 1999 World
Cup de Mel was promoted to national selector as Sri Lanka ushered
in a new era.
