Profile:

An outstanding left handed opener from Victoria, Matthew Elliott is one of the most talented contemporary batsmen in Australia. A delightful player to watch, he possesses excellent footwork, is a gifted timer of his strokes, and plays with great fluency and style to both sides of the wicket. He was occasionally troubled through the early part of his career by a tendency to hook and pull in the air, but there are now very few weaknesses in his game and he can make batting look ridiculously uncomplicated.

Following a string of excellent performances for his state, Elliott won Australian selection for the first time at the start of 1996-97 season and impressed immediately, but a nasty mid-pitch collision with Mark Waugh in the following Test left him with a knee injury which sidelined him for a considerable period. After winning his way back, he then enhanced his reputation with a stellar Ashes series in 1997 in England - one that led him to being named among Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year. But soon after, he began to lose his way at the international level and he experienced a run of outs which ultimately culminated in the loss of his Australian Cricket Board contract prior to the 1999-2000 domestic season.

Elliott nevertheless continues to plunder runs for Victoria (a point underlined by the fact that he has twice been named the Sheffield Shield Player of the Year) and he has never seemed far away from regaining his Test cap. He was also honoured by being appointed the state's one-day captain in the lead-up to the 2001-02 domestic season. He then became its first-class leader upon Paul Reiffel's retirement later the same summer. (John Polack, June 2002)
