Profile:

Several slow bowlers have been tried for the West Indies in the last five years, and Mahendra Nagamootoo is currently in possession of the spinner's place. He has a disappointing record with the ball, though he is a good hitter down the order. He will never be a great bowler, but could develop into a useful player.

Nagamootoo was selected for the 2000 Tour of England thanks to a strong performance in the Busta Cup. He claimed 31 scalps in the competition, benefiting from spinner-friendly tracks at Bourda.

In England, he played two unremarkable ODIs, though the only wicket he claimed was that of England skipper Nasser Hussain. Nagamootoo's quick-fire century against Somerset highlighted his all-round ambitions, though his bowling was distinctly average. Making his Test debut at the Oval, Nagamootoo dismissed Hussain again and finished with match figures of 3/92.

Selected for the tour of Australia, Nagamootoo played just one Test. A creditable performance at Sydney bought three wickets and a Test-best 68 with the bat. In the one-day series, his figures of 4/32 helped West Indies to an easy victory over Zimbabwe.

Only occasionally making the one-day side, Nagamootoo had to wait until 2002 to win back his Test place. He took 50 wickets in nine Busta Cup matches and returned to face India. Though he only took one wicket in the Test match, it was that of Sachin Tendulkar.

Dropped for the second Test, Nagamootoo was involved in a car crash in which he sustained minor injuries. He returned to Test cricket against New Zealand, a powerful 32 the highlight of a poor match. (Sean Beynon, Copyright CricInfo September 2002)
