NEWS FROM THE STANDARD Sun, Lucent to Build Unified Messaging Platform Aug 17 1998 12:00 AM PDT  PROFILE Octel is trying not to become the butt of a 'knock-knock' joke. The company's main product is TEL (about 70% of sales), a lead alkyl antiknock gas additive sold to oil refineries. Octel readily admits that its TEL sales have been in steady decline since the US enacted the Clean Air Act in 1970 (with other countries following suit); sales fell by about 25% in 2000. Octel, a 1998 spin off from Great Lakes Chemical, is looking to two developing businesses for growth. The company makes other fuel additives (used to burn fuel more efficiently) sold to refiners, and specialty chemicals with applications in the personal care, pulp and paper, and coatings market.
