PROFILE |
 |
This law firm underwent about a dozen name changes during its 90-year history before christening itself Dewey Ballantine (not to be confused with the fictitious Dewey, Cheatem & Howe) in 1997. The Dewey in the name refers to former partner Thomas Dewey, famous for the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline from the 1948 presidential election (he actually lost). The firm (which has more than 500 attorneys in nine offices worldwide) specializes in mergers and acquisitions, overseeing some of the larger deals of the 1990s, including Chrysler's merger with Daimler Benz and Lockheed Martin's merger with Northrop. Walt Disney is another major client of the firm, which also practices antitrust, corporate, tax, and trade law.
