PROFILE |
 |
Radio stations count on Arbitron to count their listeners. Spun off as a public company from information provider Ceridian in 2001, the company performs radio audience surveys in more than 280 markets across the US, primarily by having participants fill out listening diaries. (Arbitron realizes the diary system is antiquated and is trying to move to portable electronic "people meters.") Some 3,700 stations and 2,600 advertising agencies and advertisers subscribe to the surveys. In addition, the company monitors cable and satellite TV viewership, measures newspaper and magazine circulation, collects consumer purchasing and lifestyle information, and provides ratings analysis software. Arbitron has five regional offices in the US as well as a UK subsidiary.
