PROFILE |
 |
Theragenics helped New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani win a fight against cancer, but it couldn't win him a Senate seat. The firm's TheraSeed product, used to treat Giuliani's prostate cancer, is a radioactive implant about the size of a grain of rice. The seeds are implanted in early stage prostate tumors and release radiation that kills cancerous cells with minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Palladium-103, produced in Theragenics' own cyclotrons, is the radiation source. Amersham (formerly Nycomed Amersham), Imagyn Medical Technologies, C.R. Bard, and Prostate Services of America market the seeds. Theragenics hopes to expand TheraSeed's use to macular degeneration, restenosis, and other cancers.
