Not your average drugstore cowboy, GelTex Pharmaceuticals rides herd on its drugs to make sure they do their work in the intestinal tract without being absorbed into the bloodstream, thus minimizing adverse side effects. The FDA has approved the company's RenaGel, which treats elevated phosphorus levels in patients with chronic kidney failure, and Welchol (formerly CholestaGel, developed with Sankyo Pharma), a drug which treats high LDL cholesterol levels. The company is also developing a drug to treat obesity by inhibiting the body's absorption of fat, and treatments for infectious diseases (such as "C. difficile" infections). The company is a subsidiary of Genzyme General, which is a division of Genzyme Corporation.
