PROFILE |
 |
Frederick Brewing Co. was feeling high on life when it introduced the first US craft beer brewed with hemp seeds, Hempen Ale, in 1997. Since then the company has experienced a bit of a downer in sales. Nevertheless, Ohio's largest independent brewer, Snyder International Brewing Group, acquired a 51% stake in the firm in 1999, resulting in the resignation of founders Kevin Brannon and Marjorie McGinnis. Snyder's owners, David Snyder and Christopher Livingston, now head the company. Hempen has been discontinued, but Frederick makes more than 20 other beers and ales, including Blue Ridge, Brimstone, and Wild Goose (which brings in 57% of revenue) for the company's 140 independent distributors.
