Sheffield Steel (an HMK Enterprises subsidiary) is on a roll -- a hot roll. The minimill operator produces a variety of steel products for commercial, industrial, and agricultural applications. It primarily makes specialty hot-rolled bar products (including flat, square, round, and channel forms), which account for more than 40% of sales. The company also makes rebar (about 30% of sales) for construction projects; fabricated fence posts and fabricated rebar (for the highway and construction markets); and billets (which are reheated, rolled, and sheared into finished steel products). Chairman Steven Karol and his wife, Jane, own about 40% of the firm, which has operations in Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
