PROFILE Roanoke Electric Steel turns wrecked Renaults and bashed Buicks into merchant steel bar, billets, steel joists, and reinforcing steel. Its Shredded Products subsidiary processes junked autos to supply the company's steel minimills with raw materials. Subsidiaries John W. Hancock, Jr., and Socar use the merchant steel to produce joists used in construction; subsidiary RESCO Steel Products Corporation cuts and bends reinforcing steel to contractor specifications. Another subsidiary, Steel of West Virginia, makes custom steel for mining equipment, guardrail posts, and industrial lift trucks.
