What began as a London drapery shop is today one of the UK's largest retailers -- and arguably its most oddly organized. John Lewis Partnership runs about 25 John Lewis department stores and some 130 Waitrose supermarkets in England, Scotland, and Wales. Subsidiary Findlater Mackie Todd & Co. sells wine and spirits via mail order. The partnership also makes woven and printed fabric, wooden furniture, and bedding, and it grows mushrooms. Founded in 1864 by John Lewis, the firm became a partnership in 1929 when Lewis' son, Spedan, created a trust to own the company. Employees (called partners) are beneficiaries of the trust and as such receive perks, including a share of the profits, and elect trustees.
