Business Summary
The TJX Companies, Inc. is an off-price retailer of apparel and home fashions in the United States and worldwide. The Company offers off-price family apparel and home fashions through its T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and A.J. Wright chains in the United States, its Winners Apparel Ltd. Stores (Winners) chain in Canada and its T.K. Maxx chain primarily in the United Kingdom. The Company also operates HomeGoods in the United States, a chain that focuses exclusively on off-price home fashions, and is opening a Canadian home fashions chain called HomeSense in fiscal 2002. The target customer for all of the Company's chains, except A.J. Wright, is the middle- to upper-middle-income shopper. A.J. Wright targets a more moderate-income customer.

Financial Summary
The TJX Companies, Inc. operates off-price apparel and home fashions retail stores under the names T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, T.K. Maxx, HomeGoods and A.J. Wright Stores. For the 26 weeks ended 7/28/01, sales increased 9% to $4.76 billion. Earnings decreased 4% to $235.6 million. Net sales benefited from new store openings. Earnings were offset by unseasonable and harsh weather which resulted in greater markdown, and higher labor-related expenses.
