Business Summary
USA Education, Inc. is the nation's largest private source of funding and servicing support for higher education loans for students and their parents. The Company provides a wide range of financial services, processing capabilities and information technology to meet the needs of educational institutions, lenders, students, and guarantee agencies. As of December 31, 2000, the Company's managed portfolio of federally insured student loans totaled approximately $64.5 billion (including loans owned and loans securitized). The Company also had commitments to purchase $16.4 billion of additional student loans as of December 31, 2000. Primarily a provider of education credit, the Company serves a diverse range of clients, including approximately 5,500 educational and financial institutions and state agencies. The Company serves in excess of 7 million borrowers through its ownership and management of approximately $67.5 billion in student loans.

Financial Summary
SLM provides a wide range of financial services, processing capabilities and information technology to meet the needs of educational institutions, lenders, students and guarantee agencies. For the six months ended 6/30/01, interest income rose 3% to $1.67 billion. Net income applicable to Common rose 14% to $305.8 million. Interest income reflects higher student loan balances. Net income also benefited from an increase in servicing and securitization revenue.
