The St. Paul Companies, Inc. is a management company principally engaged, through its subsidiaries, in providing commercial property-liability insurance, and reinsurance products and services worldwide. The Company owns F&G Life Insurance Company and, through its majority ownership of The John Nuveen Company, has a presence in the asset-management industry. As a management company, the Company oversees the operations of its subsidiaries and provides them with capital, management and administrative services. The Company has eight business segments in its insurance operations, which consist of: Commercial Lines Group, Global Healthcare, Global Surety, Other Global Specialty, International, Reinsurance, Property-Liability Investment Operations and Life Insurance.

Financial Summary
The St. Paul Companies underwrites property-casualty, life insurance and reinsurance worldwide, and offers asset management services. For the six months ended 6/30/01, total revenues increased 5% to $4.33 billion. Net income applicable to Common from continuing ops decreased 46% to $301 million. Results reflect increased written premiums due to price increases and strong renewal retention rates. Earnings were offset by higher insurance losses and loss adjustment expenses.
