Business Summary
Level 3 Communications, Inc. and its subsidiaries provide a broad range of integrated communications services, and engage in the communications, information services and coal mining businesses. The Company is a facilities-based provider, a provider that owns or leases a substantial portion of the plant, property and equipment necessary to provide its services. The Company has created, generally by constructing its own assets, but also through a combination of purchasing and leasing of facilities, the Level 3 Network, an international, facilities-based communications network, to provide communications services that employ and leverage rapidly improving underlying optical and Internet Protocol technologies. At February 15, 2001, the Company had a total of 63 markets in service, comprised of 52 markets in the United States, nine in Europe and two in Asia.

Financial Summary
LVLT is a telecommunications and information services company that operates an advanced, international facilities-based communications network based on Internet Protocol technology. LVLT also has interests in coal mining and public companies. For the 26 weeks ended 6/30/01, revenues totaled $838 million, up from $411 million. Net loss totaled $1.27 billion, up from $552 million. Results reflect growth of the customer base, offset by increased network and personnel expenses.
