Nextel Communications, Inc. provides a wide array of digital wireless communications services throughout the United States. The Company offers a differentiated, integrated package of digital wireless communications services under the Nextel brand, primarily to business users. The Company's digital mobile network utilizes a single transmission technology that was developed by Motorola, Inc., and is referred to as integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) technology. As of December 31, 2000, the Company had close to 6.7 million digital handsets in service in the United States.

Financial Summary
NXTL provides a wide array of digital wireless communications services utilizing single transmission technology to customers throughout the U.S. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 43% to $3.62 billion. Net loss before extraordinary item applicable to Common rose 37% to $854 million. Revenues reflect an increased number of domestic digital subscriber units in service. Higher loss reflects higher customer acquisition and handset upgrade costs.
