Business Summary
The Southern Company owns various power companies operating in the Southern United States. Southern owns all the outstanding common stock of Alabama Power Company (Alabama), Georgia Power Co. (Georgia), Gulf Power Co., Mississippi Power Co. and Savannah Electric and Power Company, each of which is an operating public utility company. These integrated Southeast utilities supply electric service in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Georgia, respectively. Southern also owns Southern Communications Services, Inc. (Southern LINC), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (Southern Nuclear), Southern Company Services, Inc. (SCS), Southern Company Energy Solutions (Energy Solutions), Southern Telecom, Inc. (Southern Telecom), Southern Power Company (SPC) and other direct and indirect subsidiaries.

Financial Summary
SO is a holding company for Alabama, Georgia, Gulf, Mississippi and Savannah public utility companies as well as Southern LINC, Southern Nuclear, Southern Telecom, SCS, Energy Solutions and other subsidiaries. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 6% to $4.83 billion. Net income from continuing operations before acct. change rose 10% to $449.1 million. Results reflect growth in the number of customers and lower net interest expense.
