Business Summary
Sonoco Products Company consists of two main business segments, industrial and consumer packaging. Sonoco's industrial packaging segment produced approximately 54% of the Company's sales in 2000. Industrial products and services include high-performance paper, plastic and composite engineered carriers; paperboard; wood, metal and composite reels for wire and cable packaging; fiber-based construction tubes and forms; custom-designed protective packaging; and supply chain management capabilities. Sonoco's consumer packaging segment accounted for approximately 46% of the Company's 2000 sales. Consumer products include round and shaped composite cans, printed flexible packaging, high density film products and folding cartons. The consumer products business also includes specialty packaging and packaging services. The Company is in the process of restructuring in order to create more synergies between businesses to leverage resources for greater cost-effectiveness and customer service.

Financial Summary
Sonoco manufactures high-value tubes, cores, and cones, and provides packaging materials and services used by a variety of the world's industries in their winding and converting processes. For the six months ended 7/1/01, revenues decreased 6% to $1.28 billion. Net income decreased 76% to $21.6 million. Revenues reflect lower unit volumes shipped and lower prices of recovered paper. Earnings suffered from a $46.3 million restructuring charge and insurance adjustments.
