Kansas City Life Insurance Company underwrites a full line of individual life insurance and annuity products, primarily operating in four business segments: its individual business, its group business, and its two insurance affiliates, Sunset Life Insurance Company of America and Old American Insurance Company. The Company operates nationwide, being licensed in 48 states and the District of Columbia. Sunset Life Insurance Company markets interest sensitive and traditional products to individuals through a personal producing general agency system. Life Insurance Company operates in 40 states and is in the process of filing for admission to operate in most of the remaining states. Old American Insurance Company markets whole life final expense products to seniors through a general agency sales force. Old American operates in 46 states.

Financial Summary
Kansas City Life Insurance Company underwrites a full line of individual life insurance and annuity products through its two wholly owned subsidiaries. For the six months ended 6/30/01, total revenues fell 1% to $235.1 million. Net income decreased 22% to $21 million. Revenues reflect decreased life insurance premiums and a realized loss vs. a gain. Net income reflects increased amortization of policy acquisition cost and higher death benefits.
