NICOR Inc. is a holding company. Its principal subsidiaries are Northern Illinois Gas Company (doing business as Nicor Gas Company), a distributor of natural gas, and Tropical Shipping, a transporter of containerized freight in the Caribbean. Gas distribution is NICOR's primary business, representing approximately 90% of consolidated operating income and assets in a typical year. NICOR also owns several unregulated energy-related ventures, including a partnership in Nicor Energy, a provider of energy products and services.

Financial Summary
NICOR Inc. is a holding company for Nicor Gas, a distributor of natural gas. GAS also owns Tropical Shipping, which provides containerized freight shipping in the Carribbean. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 83% to $1.85 billion. Net income applicable to Common fell 6% to $65.3 million. Revenues reflect higher natural gas prices. Earnings were offset by increased costs of natural gas used and customer conservation.
