Business Summary
NL Industries, Inc. is a producer of titanium dioxide pigments (TiO2) through its principal wholly owned subsidiary, Kronos Inc. Kronos produces over 40 different TiO2 grades, sold under the Kronos trademark that provide a variety of performance properties to meet customers' specific requirements. The manufacturing facilities of Kronos are located in Germany, Canada, Belgium and Norway. The Company is also engaged in the mining and sale of ilmenite ore (a raw material used as a feedstock by sulfate-process TiO2 plants), and in the manufacture and sale of iron-based water treatment chemicals (derived from co-products of the pigment production processes). Subsidiaries of Kronos and Huntsman ICI Holdings each own a 50% interest in a manufacturing joint venture, Louisiana Pigment Company.

Financial Summary
NL Industries, Inc. is an international producer of titanium dioxide pigments (Ti02) (chemical products used for imparting whiteness, brightness and opacity to a variety of products). For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues fell 14% to $466.9 million. Net income fell 31% to $60 million. Revenues reflect decreased production volumes and lower gains from litigation settlement. Earnings also reflect lower remediation accrual and decreased legal fees.
