Business Summary
Western Resources Inc. is a consumer services company primarily engaged in providing electric generation, transmission and distribution services in Kansas and providing monitored security services in North America, the United Kingdom and continental Europe. Rate regulated electric service is provided by KPL, a division of the Company, and Kansas Gas and Electric Company, a wholly owned subsidiary. Monitored security services are provided by Protection One, Inc., and other wholly owned subsidiaries collectively referred to as Protection One Europe.

Financial Summary
WR provides electric generation, transmission and distribution services in Kansas. WR also provides monitored services to customers in the U.S, U.K. and continental Europe. For the six months ended 6/30/01, total sales rose 5% to $1.08 billion. Net loss before extraordinary item and accounting change applicable to Common totaled $55.8 million vs. an income of $62.8 million. Results reflect increased power marketing sales, offset by a loss on the disposition of services operations.
