Business Summary
Amcol International Corporation is engaged in the minerals and environmental industries, as well as the transportation business. The minerals segment mines, processes and distributes clays and products with similar applications to various industrial and consumer markets. The environmental segment processes and distributes clays and products with similar applications for use as a moisture barrier in commercial construction, landfill liners and in a variety of other industrial and commercial applications. The transportation segment includes a long haul trucking business and a freight brokerage business, which provide services to both the Company's plants and outside customers.

Financial Summary
Amcol International operates in three segments: absorbent polymers, minerals and environmental. For the six months ended 6/30/01, net sales fell 7% to $139.7 million. Net income from continuing operations and before accounting change and extraordinary item fell 8% to $5.9 million. Revenues reflect decreased volumes in the domestic minerals business and lower U.S. export shipments. Lower income also reflects lower investment income and higher interest expenses.
