Business Summary
J. C. Penney Company, Inc. is a retailer, operating 3,800 stores, including 1,111 JCPenney department stores, located in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Mexico. In addition, the Company operates 49 Renner department stores in Brazil. The major portion of the Company's business consists of providing merchandise and services to consumers through department stores, catalog departments and its Internet Website, JCPenney.com. The Company markets predominantly family apparel, jewelry, shoes, accessories and home furnishings. Through its subsidiary, Eckerd Corporation, the Company operates a chain of 2,640 drugstores located throughout the Southeast, Sunbelt and Northeast regions of the United States. On June 18, 2001, J. C. Penney sold its J. C. Penney Direct Marketing Services, Inc. assets, including its J. C. Penney Life Insurance subsidiaries, to a United States subsidiary of AEGON, N.V.
