Business Summary
Caraustar Industries, Inc. is a major manufacturer of 100%-recycled paperboard and converted paperboard products. The Company manufactures products primarily from recovered fiber that is derived from recycled paper. The Company operates in three business segments, which include paperboard; tube, core and composite container; and carton and custom packaging. Caraustar's principal manufacturing activity is the production of uncoated and clay-coated recycled paperboard. In addition, the Company's largest converting operation is the production of tubes and cores. Caraustar's other converting operations produce folding cartons and rigid set-up boxes at 16 plants.

Financial Summary
Caraustar Industries and its subsidiaries are engaged in the manufacturing, converting and marketing of paperboard and related products, including tubes, cores and composite containers, cartons and custom packaging. For the six months ended 6/30/01, net sales fell 13% to $436.4 million. Net loss before extraordinary item totalled $7.8 million, vs. an income of $11.6 million. Results reflect a decrease in overall unit volume per ton, lower gross margins and higher interest expenses.
