Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation is engaged primarily in railroad transportation, through its principal subsidiary, The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF Railway), which operates approximately 33,500 route miles of railroad, covering 28 states and two Canadian provinces. Through one operating transportation services segment, BNSF Railway transports a wide range of products and commodities, including the transportation of containers and trailers (intermodal), coal and agricultural commodities, which constituted 29%, 23% and 14%, respectively, of total revenues for the year ended December 31, 2000. Other significant aspects of BNSF's business include the transportation of chemicals, forest products, consumer goods, metals, minerals, automobiles and automobile parts.

Financial Summary
Burlington Northern Santa Fe is engaged in the rail transportation business through Burlington Northern Railroad Co. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 1% to $4.56 billion. Net income before extraordinary items fell 28% to $335 million. Revenues reflect increased demand for agricultural commodities consisting of corn, milo, and meal. Earnings were offset by sharply higher fuel prices, flooding in the Midwest, higher wages and increased health and welfare costs.
