Business Summary
FirstMerit Corporation is a $10.2 billion bank holding company whose principal business consists of owning and supervising its affiliates. Through its affiliates, the Company operates primarily as a regional banking organization, providing a wide range of banking, fiduciary, financial, insurance and investment services to corporate, institutional and individual customers throughout northeastern and central Ohio. FirstMerit's largest subsidiary is FirstMerit Bank N.A. The Company's principal direct operating subsidiaries, other than FirsMerit Bank, include FirstMerit Credit Life Insurance Company and FirstMerit Community Development Corporation. FirstMerit's non-banking direct and indirect subsidiaries provide insurance sales services, credit life, credit accident and health insurance, securities brokerage services, equipment lease financing and other financial services.

Financial Summary
FMER is a multi-bank holding company which provides a wide range of banking, fiduciary, financial, investment and insurance services. For the six months ended 6/30/01, interest income fell 4% to $373.3 million. Net interest income after LLP fell 4% to $164.2 million. Net income applicable to Common before accounting change fell 1% to $78.8 million. Net interest income reflects lower interest and dividends. Lower earnings also reflect increased bankcard and loan processing costs.
