Business Summary
American Capital Strategies, Ltd. is a publicly traded buyout and mezzanine fund that is principally engaged in providing senior debt, subordinated debt and equity to middle-market companies in need of capital for management buyouts including Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) buyouts, growth, acquisitions, liquidity and restructuring. The Company's ability to fund the entire capital structure is an advantage in completing middle-market transactions. American Capital generally invests up to $30 million in each transaction and through its subsidiary, American Capital Financial Services Inc., will arrange and secure capital for larger transactions. The Company's primary business objectives are to increase its net operating income and net asset value by investing its assets in senior debt, subordinated debt with detachable warrants and equity of middle-market companies with attractive current yields and potential for equity appreciation.

Financial Summary
ACAS, a buyout and specialty finance company, invests in senior debt, subordinated debt and equity in middle market companies in need of capital for growth, ESOP buyouts, acquisitions, management buyouts, liquidity and restructuring. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 60% to $42.2 million. Net income fell 93% to $2 million. Results reflect the completion of seven financing transactions, offset by a decrease in net unrealized appreciation of investments.
