Business Summary
Northeast Utilities (NU) is the parent company of the Northeast Utilities system (NU system). The NU system furnishes franchised retail electric service in Connecticut, New Hampshire and western Massachusetts through three of NU's wholly owned subsidiaries, CL&P, Public Service Company of New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts Electric Company. The NU system also furnishes retail natural gas service in most of Connecticut through its Yankee Gas Services Company subsidiary. NU, through its wholly owned subsidiary, NU Enterprises, Inc., owns a number of competitive energy- and telecommunications-related businesses, including Northeast Generation Company, Northeast Generation Services Company, Select Energy, Inc., HEC Inc., Mode 1 Communications, Inc. and Select Energy Portland Pipeline, Inc.

Financial Summary
NU is the parent company of Northeast Utilities System. NU provides electrical service to CT, NH and Western MA through it wholly owned subsidiaries. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 21% to $3.38 billion. Net income applicablee to Common before accounting change totaled $181.3 million, up from $86.8 million. Revenues reflect new contracts for energy services and the acquisition of Yankee. Net income also reflects a $653.9 million gain on the sale of a utility plant.
