Business Summary
BASF AG is a transnational chemical company. The Company's product range includes chemicals, plastics, colorants and pigments, dispersions, automotive and industrial coatings, agricultural products and fine chemicals, as well as crude oil and natural gas. BASF is comprised of the parent company, BASF Aktiengesellschaft of Ludwigshafen, Germany, and 169 consolidated subsidiaries. BASF has five separate business segments: Chemicals, Plastics & Fibers, Colorants & Finishing Products, Health & Nutrition and Oil & Gas. These business segments encompass BASF's operating divisions. In early 2001, BASF sold its pharmaceuticals business to Abbott Laboratories Inc. of Abbott Park, Illinois.

Financial Summary
BASF AG is a global company specializing in chemicals, health and nutrition, and energy. BASF's products include high-value chemicals, plastics, dyestuffs, automotive and industrial coatings, pesticides and crude oil and natural gas. For the six months ended 6/01, net sales rose 1% to EUR17.62 billion. Net income before US GAAP totalled EUR6.20 billion, up from EUR912M. Results reflect higher sales of oil and gas and the sale of the pharmaceutical business.
