Business Summary
United Rentals, Inc. is an equipment rental company with 755 locations in 47 states, seven Canadian provinces and Mexico. The Company offers for rent over 600 different types of equipment to more than 1.2 million customers, including construction and industrial companies, manufacturers, utilities, municipalities, homeowners and others. During 2000, the Company completed more than 8.4 million rental transactions. In addition to renting equipment, the Company sells used rental equipment, acts as a dealer for new equipment, and sells related merchandise, parts and service.

Financial Summary
United Rentals rents a broad array of equipment to a diverse customer base that includes construction industry participants, industrial companies, homeowners and other individuals. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 6% to $1.39 billion. Net income before extraordinary item fell 56% to $28.3 million. Revenues reflect increased rental transactions and the expansion of product lines. Net income was offset by higher cost of rentals and $28.9 million in restructuring charges.
