Business Summary
MAF Bancorp, Inc. is a registered savings and loan holding company primarily engaged in the retail banking business through its wholly owned subsidiary, Mid America Bank, fsb and, to a lesser extent, in the residential real estate development business. The Bank is a consumer-oriented financial institution offering various financial services to its customers through 27 retail banking offices. The Bank's market area is generally comprised of the western suburbs of Chicago, including DuPage County, as well as the west side of Chicago. It is principally engaged in the business of attracting deposits from the general public and using such deposits, along with other borrowings, to make loans secured by real estate, primarily one- to-four-family residential mortgage loans. The Bank, located in Chicago, has over $5 billion in assets.

Financial Summary
MAFB is a S and L holding company engaged in consumer banking through Mid America Bank, fsb, and residential real estate development businesses through MAF Developments. For the six months ended 6/30/01, total interest income rose 7% to $177.1 million. Net interest income after loan loss provision rose 4% to $64.3 million. Earnings rose 4% to $28 million. Results reflect growth in the loan portfolio, partially offset by lower interest margins and increased compensation expenses.
