Business Summary
Steinway Musical Instruments, Inc. is engaged in the design, manufacture and marketing of musical instruments. The Company offers pianos, band and orchestral instruments and services through its subsidiaries and operating divisions: Steinway and Sons, Boston Piano Company, Kluge, The Band Instrument Divisions, The Percussion Division and Stringed Instrument Divisions. Steinway and Sons offers two premium-priced product lines, grand pianos and vertical pianos. Boston Piano Company offers two complete lines of grand and vertical pianos for the mid-priced piano market. Kluge manufactures piano keys for the Company and third parties. The Band Instrument Divisions manufacture brasswind and woodwind instruments, including clarinets, flutes, piccolos, trumpets, cornets, trombones, saxophones, oboes and bassoons. The Percussion Division manufactures acoustical and tuned percussion instruments, and the Stringed Instrument Divisions manufacture and distribute violins, violas, cellos and basses.

Financial Summary
LVB, through its two subsidiaries, is a manufacturer of musical instruments. Steinway produces quality pianos. Selmer is a manufacturer of band and orchestral instruments and related accessories. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues decreased 11% to $165.6 million. Net income before extraordinary item increased 9% to $9.7 million. Revenues reflect decreased piano sales. Net income was partially offset by increased piano margins.
