BB&T Corporation is a financial holding company that conducts its operations primarily in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Washington, D.C., through its commercial banking subsidiaries and, to a lesser extent, through its other subsidiaries. The Company's principal banking subsidiaries, Branch Banking and Trust Company, Branch Banking and Trust Company of South Carolina, and Branch Banking and Trust Company of Virginia, provide a wide range of traditional banking services to individuals and businesses. The Company's loans are primarily to individuals and businesses located in the geographic areas in which the Company conducts business.

Financial Summary
BB&T is a multi-bank holding Co., which conducts its operations in NC, SC, VA, MD, GA, WV, KY and Washington, D.C. For the six months ended 6/30/01, total interest income rose 6% to $2.35 billion. Net interest income after loan loss provision fell 1% to $1.01 billion. Net income increased 23% to $453.1 million. Net interest income reflects higher interest earning assets, offset by higher costs of borrowed funds. Net income reflects higher mortgage banking income and deposit charges.
