Business Summary
Wellman Incorporated is principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of polyester products, including Fortrel brand polyester textile fibers, polyester fibers made from recycled raw materials and PermaClear PET (polyethylene terephthalate) resins. The Company is divided into two operating segments, Fibers and Recycled Products Group and Packaging Products Group. The Packaging Products Group manufactures solid-stated and amorphous PET resins primarily used in the manufacture of soft drink bottles and other food and beverage packaging. The Fiber and Recycled Products Group manufactures chemical-based polyester staple fibers and polyester partially oriented yarn (POY) for sale to the textile industry and for industrial products, and recycled-based polyester staple fiber for use in pillows, comforters, furniture, carpets, rugs and industrial products.

Financial Summary
Wellman manufactures and sells polyester products, including Fortrel brand polyester textile fibers, polyester fibers made from recycled raw materials and Perma-Clear PET packaging resins. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 2% to $572.5 million. Net income fell 50% to $5.6 million. Results reflect an increase in revenue from the PET resins business, offset by higher raw material costs and an impact from the plant outage in the second quarter.
