American Financial Group, Inc. (AFG) is a holding company that, through its subsidiaries, is engaged primarily in private passenger automobile and specialty property and casualty insurance businesses, and in the sale of tax-deferred annuities and certain life and supplemental health insurance products. AFG's property and casualty group is managed in two major business groups, Personal and Specialty. AFG's annuity and life operations are conducted through Great American Financial Resources, Inc., a holding company that markets retirement products, primarily fixed and variable annuities, and various forms of life and supplemental health insurance through Great American Life Insurance Company, Annuity Investors Life Insurance Company, Loyal American Life Insurance Company, Great American Life Assurance Company of Puerto Rico and United Teacher Associates Insurance Company.

Financial Summary
AFG is a holding company engaged in automobile and specialty property and casualty insurance and in the sale of annuities and certain life and supplemental health insurance products. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 7% to $1.97 billion. Net income fell 68% to $19.4 million. Revenues reflect increased property and casualty insurance premiums. Earnings were offset by an increase in property losses and commissions and other underwriting expenses.
