Business Summary
Canadian National Railway Company (CN) operates in the North American rail industry. At December 31, 1999, CN operated approximately 15,800 route-miles of track in eight Canadian provinces and 14 of the United States, with principal routes to every major metropolitan area in Canada and to the major United States rail hubs of Buffalo, Detroit, Duluth/Superior, Wisconsin, Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans and Baton Rouge. CN is North America's only transcontinental railroad, and Canada's largest railroad, serving all five major Canadian ports on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and the Great Lakes as well as New Orleans on the Gulf of Mexico. CN's freight revenues are derived from the movement of a balanced and diversified mix of commodities and products. Approximately 45% of CN's 1999 freight revenues are attributable to Canadian and United States domestic traffic and 31% to cross-border traffic. The remaining 24% of revenues are derived from import and export traffic.
