Business Summary
AFLAC Incorporated is a general business holding company and acts as a management company, overseeing the operations of its subsidiaries by providing management services and making capital available. Its principal business is supplemental health and life insurance, which is marketed and administered primarily through its subsidiary, American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus (AFLAC). Most of AFLAC's policies are individually underwritten and marketed at worksites through independent agents with premiums paid by the employee. The Company's operations in Japan (AFLAC Japan) and the United States (AFLAC U.S.) service the two markets for its insurance business. AFLAC invests primarily within the debt securities markets in Japan, the United States and Europe.

Financial Summary
AFLAC, Inc. operates in the insurance industry and primarily sells supplemental health insurance in Japan and the U.S. For the six months ended 6/30/01, net revenues rose less than 1% to $4.75 billion. Net earnings fell 7% to $332 million. Revenues reflect decreased sales of Rider MAX and Accident/Disability insurance, and a overall decrease in premiums. Net income also reflects the absence of a $101 million retirement release benefit.
