Business Summary
The AES Corporation is a global power company that participates primarily in two related lines of business, electricity generation and distribution. The Company's electricity generation business is characterized by sales from its power plants to non-affiliated wholesale customers (generally electric utilities, regional electric companies, electricity marketers and traders or wholesale commodity markets known as "power pools") for further resale to end users. AES' distribution business is characterized by sales of electricity directly to end users such as commercial, industrial, governmental and residential customers.

Financial Summary
The AES Corp. operates and owns a diverse portfolio of electric power plants with a total capacity of 42,133 megawatts. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 38% to $4.76 billion. Net income before extraordinary items fell 47% to $218 million. Revenues reflect the strong results from the newly acquired distribution businesses. Earnings were offset by higher percentage of the Company's operation being derived from the distribution business which carries lower margin.
