PROFILE Older but wiser, The Wiser Oil Company is one of the oldest oil independents in the US. Founded in 1905, the oil and gas production company acquires properties with known reserves; it owns total proved reserves of about 42 million barrels of oil equivalent, more than half of which are in the Permian Basin. Wiser has other major operations in the San Juan Basin and in Western Canada. The company has dabbled in South America, but it has withdrawn unsuccessful exploration ventures in Peru and Brazil. Wiser has interests in more than 3,300 producing oil and gas wells.
