PROFILE |
 |
Named for the year in which it was founded, Canadian 88 Energy is a natural gas and oil exploration, production, and marketing company. Greg Noval started the company in 1988 with $200,000 and built it through drilling and acquisitions. Canadian 88 is perhaps best known for a trio of big takeover targets that got away: Amerada Hess Canada, Texaco Canada, and Morrison Petroleums. The company has proved reserves of 37 million barrels of oil equivalent (98% of which is natural gas). Canadian 88 explores for natural gas in Alberta and Nova Scotia. In 2001 the company spurned a takeover bid from rival Canadian Superior Energy, which is headed by Noval.
