Founded by Texas billionaire Harold Simmons, Contran is a holding company that controls more than 90% of Valhi, Inc., a publicly traded company. Through subsidiaries and affiliations, Valhi conducts diversified operations involved in chemicals (NL Industries), titanium metals (Titanium Metals Corporation), waste management services (Waste Control Specialties), computer support systems, and precision ball bearing slides and locking systems (CompX International). Contran also has a controlling interest in Keystone Consolidated Industries, a maker of fencing and wire products. Trusts benefiting Simmons' daughters and his grandchildren (with Simmons as the sole trustee) own almost all of Contran.
