Does nature abhor a vacuum cleaner company? HMI Industries thinks not. Under the brand names Filter Queen, Defender, Health-Mor, Majestic, Princess, Empress, and Vacu-Queen, the company sells central vacuum cleaning systems, portable surface cleaners, and portable room air cleaners designed to rid homes of pollutants and irritants. HMI sells its products directly to consumers and through retail stores. International customers in more than 40 countries account for about two-thirds of its sales. After a failed diversification attempt in the early 1990s, the company sold noncore businesses. Investor Barry Needler owns about 28% of the company.
