PROFILE |

The Derby Cycle Corporation isn't winning any races. The company was formed in 1986 to acquire Raleigh, Gazelle, and Sturmey-Archer from TI Group; Sturmey-Archer has since been sold off tool-by-tool, while Gazelle has returned to Dutch hands through Gilde Investments. Derby CEO Alan Finden-Crofts (and once upon a time, Raleigh's owner) has made a pitch to buy back Raleigh, which no longer manufacturers bicycles itself. Instead, the company paints and assembles imported parts. Derby's other brands include Diamondback and Univega. Between those two, Derby produces mountain, city, hybrid, BMX, and road-racing bicycles. Investment groups Thayer Capital Partners and Perseus Capital are Derby Cycle's primary investors.
