PROFILE Candescent Technologies hopes to cash in on thin. The development-stage company designs flat-panel displays that incorporate thin cathode ray tubes (CRTs ), the technology used in traditional televisions. (Most flat-panel monitors use liquid-crystal displays.) Besides targeting television makers, the company also is developing products for video games and automotive navigation systems. Candescent, which relies on investment capital and government research and development contracts, plans to license its technology and produce displays through joint ventures. It has secured agreements with two of its major investors, Hewlett-Packard and Sony.
