PROFILE In a city of big stores, Central Grocers Cooperative helps neighborhood markets stay afloat. The co-op distributes name-brand and private-label (Centrella) food and nonfood merchandise to about 240 member-owner stores in the Chicago area and also in Indiana and Wisconsin. Founded in 1918, Central Grocers has clung to independence as national giants have bought up local chains. The cooperative bought stores itself in 1998 rather than lose them as customers; it now owns 10 in Indiana and two in Illinois. The cooperative-owned stores operate under the banners Strack and Van Til, Town & Country, and Ultra Foods.
