PROFILE |
 |
Cattle meet their maker through Moyer Packing Company (MOPAC). Every day MOPAC processes more than 2,300 of the animals; its yearly output is 360 million pounds of beef products. The company markets fresh, frozen, or vacuum-packed boxed beef, ground beef, and variety meats to chain stores, processors, wholesalers, and distributors to hotels and restaurants. It also renders and sells otherwise inedible by-products for use in the production of such items as animal feed, chemicals, and soap. MOPAC has five plants in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. The Moyer family owns the company, which was started as a one-person meat business in 1877. Leading pork processor Smithfield Foods purchased MOPAC in June 2001.
