PROFILE |
 |
Packerland sends cattle packing. One of the largest beef processors in the US, Packerland Packing slaughters more than 5,200 head of cattle a day and sells its boxed beef in the US and overseas. The company operates slaughterhouses in Green Bay, Wisconsin; Gering, Nebraska; Tolleson, Arizona, and Plainwell, Michigan. Founded in 1960, the company was sold in 1977 to Colorado ski-resort tycoon George Gillett, who declared bankruptcy in 1992. A management-led investor group (including Gillett and backed by insurance company John Hancock Life) bought Packerland in 1994. In mid-2000 the company recalled nearly 200,000 pounds of ground beef due to possible E. coli contamination.
