Tempel Steel Company manufactures magnetic steel laminations used in motors, ballasts, and transformers. The company also produces electrical and cold-rolled motor lamination steel which it sells to manufacturers, subcontractors, and other customers who use it to produce their own laminations. Tempel Steel is owned by the family of Tempel Smith Sr., who founded the company in a garage in 1945. Smith's son, Tempel Smith Jr., was ousted as CEO in 1990 and subsequently bought out of the company by his sisters. Temple Steel operates in Chicago, Illinois, as well as in Monterrey, Mexico and Burlington, Ontario.
