PROFILE Dig this: North American Palladium, an exploration and mining company, mines platinum group metals (platinum, palladium, osmium, rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium), along with nickel, gold, cobalt, and copper. Its Lac des Iles open pit mine, north of Thunder Bay in northwestern Ontario, produces about 65,000 ounces of palladium annually. The company is undertaking an expansion of the mine which it projects will increase annual production to 250,000 ounces, or 5% of the world's palladium reserves, by 2002. The largest use for palladium is in making automobile catalysts to reduce exhaust emissions.
