Earle M. Jorgensen Co. (EMJ) is one of the US's largest independent steel distributors. The company sells tubing, pipes, and bar, as well as structural, plate, and sheet metal products. EMJ makes its products from carbon, alloy steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. It markets to the automotive, agriculture, chemical, medical, oil, defense, food, petrochemical, and machinery-manufacturing industries. The company operates more than 30 service centers, a cutting center, and a tube-honing facility. Employees own about 30% of EMJ; investment firm Kelso & Company owns most of the rest. The company's founder and namesake, a California industrialist and close associate of Ronald Reagan, died in 1999 at age 101.
