Formerly named British Steel, the Corus Group changed its name when it acquired most of Dutch rival Koninklijke Hoogovens. The company originally was formed when the UK privatized its major steel works in 1988. One of the world's largest steel companies, Corus makes stainless steel, coated and uncoated strip products, sections and plates, tubular products, wire rod, engineering steels, and semi-finished carbon steel products. It also manufactures aluminum which includes rolled and extrusion products. Customers include the automotive, aerospace, construction, and heavy-machinery industries. Europe accounts for 80% of the company's sales. The company has been restructuring, laying off workers.
