The company's 1998 purchase of Inland Steel Industries' US operations (renamed Ispat Inland) made it one of the world's leading steelmakers. In addition to Ispat Inland, Ispat operates other subsidiaries, including Ispat Mexicana, Caribbean Ispat (Trinidad), Ispat Sibdec (Canada), Ispat Germany, Ireland Ispat, and Ispat Unimétal (France). The company produces flat (sheet, slab) and long (wire rod, bars, pipes) steel products using direct-reduced iron, which is cheaper than using iron ore or scrap iron.
