PROFILE |
 |
Menard thinks it knows what it takes to build a solid home and a solid business. The company is the nation's #3 home improvement retailer (behind The Home Depot and Lowe's), with about 150 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Its supermarket-style stores are smaller than those of its rivals; most have indoor lumberyards and sell home improvement products such as paint, tools, and hardware. Menard's manufacturing facility makes doors and picnic tables, and helps keep prices down while fattening profit margins. Menard is owned by president and CEO John Menard, who founded the company in 1972. He also owns an Indy race-car team.
