PROFILE |
 |
Lidl & Schwarz Stiftung & Co.'s corporate philosophy is simple: We buy and sell. Lidl buys and sells everything from pantyhose and peas to produce and PCs. The company operates more than 4,000 discount department stores and supermarkets throughout Europe (about 2,000 in Germany alone), making it the fifth largest grocery retailer on the continent. The stores commonly carry about 800 different items, mostly under Lidl's own brand. Lidl isn't idle, as it's expanding into Sweden and Finland. Its Kaufland discount hypermarket chain is growing in the Czech Republic as well. The pending repeal of a German law that prohibits selling below cost could benefit discounters such as Lidl. Billionaire Dieter Schwarz and family control Lidl.
