Cegetel, the telecom arm of French conglomerate Vivendi (which has a 59% stake), maintains more than 2 million fixed lines offering long-distance service and Internet access. It also provides wireless phone services to about 8.5 million customers through its Societe Francaise du Radiotelephone (SFR) unit. A Cegetel joint venture with French railway SNCF operates a fiber-optic data transmission network.
