Business Summary
UST Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates predominantly in the tobacco industry as a manufacturer and marketer of moist smokeless tobacco products, and also produces and markets premium wines. Tobacco segment sales are made principally to a large number of wholesalers and chain stores throughout the United States. The Company's wines are produced in the state of Washington and marketed throughout the United States. It also produces and markets two California premium wines. The Company's international operation markets moist smokeless tobacco in select markets, and the cigar operation manufactures and markets the premium cigar brands Don Tomas, Astral and Habano Primero.

Financial Summary
UST Inc., through its subsidiaries, manufactures and sells smokeless tobacco products (snuff and chewing tobacco), wines and craft beers, and premium cigars. For the six months ended 6/30/01, net sales rose 6% to $805.2 million. Net income rose 7% to $229.7 million. Revenues benefited from increased demand for smokeless tobacco and Columbia Crest and Chateau Ste. Michelle wines. Earnings also reflect improved margins due to increased premium brand sales and reduced promotions.
