Business Summary
Benton Oil and Gas Company is an independent energy company, which has been engaged in the development and production of oil and gas properties. Its producing operations are conducted principally through its 80%-owned Venezuelan subsidiary, Benton-Vinccler, C.A., which operates the South Monagas Unit in Venezuela; and Geoilbent Ltd., a Russian limited liability company. Additionally, the Company owns 60% of the equity interest in Arctic Gas Company, of which 31% was subject to restrictions on transfer and 29% was not subject to restrictions on transfer, as of December 31, 2000. Arctic Gas was formed to explore and develop the Samburg and Yevo-Yakha License Blocks in the West Siberian Basin of Russia. The Company has expanded into projects which involve exploration components, such as opportunities in China, through its acquisition of the WAB-21 Exploration Block and the Molino oil and natural gas project in California.

Financial Summary
Benton Oil and Gas Company engages in the exploration, development, production and management of oil and gas properties principally in Venezuela and Russia. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 6% to $67.2 million. Net income fell 59% to $1.1 million. Revenues reflect increased production and sales from Benton-Vinccler and higher oil sales in Venezuela. Earnings were partially offset by increased depletion, depreciation, and amortization expenses and lower investment income.
