Through its subsidiaries, HMEC markets and underwrites personal lines of property and casualty and life insurance, as well as retirement annuities. HMEC's principal insurance subsidiaries are Horace Mann Insurance Company (HMIC), Teachers Insurance Company (TIC) and Horace Mann Life Insurance Company (HMLIC), each of which is an Illinois corporation, Allegiance Insurance Company (Allegiance), a California-domiciled personal lines property and casualty insurance company, and Horace Mann Lloyds (HM Lloyds), domiciled in Texas.

Financial Summary
Horace Mann is an insurance holding company that markets and underwrites retirement annuities, and automobile, homeowners, and life insurance to educators. For the six months ended 6/30/01, revenues rose 2% to $399.5 million. Net income fell 47% to $11.8 million. Results reflect sales of new annuity products and higher annuity deposit balances and contracts outstanding, offset by charges to stengthen prior years' property and casualty reserves and higher non-catastrophe weather losses.
