Golden State Bancorp, Inc. is a holding company that offers diversified financial services to consumers and small businesses through Golden State Holdings Inc., which owns all of the common and preferred stock of California Federal Bank. The Company provides diversified financial services to consumers and small businesses in California and Nevada. The Company's principal business consists of operating retail branches that provide deposit products such as demand, transaction and savings accounts, and selling investment products such as mutual funds, annuities and insurance. In addition, it engages in mortgage banking activities, including originating and purchasing one-to-four-unit residential loans for sale to various investors in the secondary market or for retention in its own portfolio, and servicing loans for itself and others. To a lesser extent, the Company originates and/or purchases commercial real estate, commercial and consumer loans for investment.

Financial Summary
GSB is a bank holding co. for California Federal Bank FSB, which operates 354 offices in CA and NV. For the six months ended 6/01, total interest income rose 5% to $2.09 billion. Net interest income after loan loss provision rose 12% to $646.7 million. Net income before extraordinary item and accounting change rose 17% to $198.5 million. Net interest income reflects higher interest earning assets and a lower cost of funds. Earnings reflect a lower minority interest charge.
