Business Summary Shoney's, Inc. is a diversified food service chain that operates and franchises family dining and quick-service restaurants located primarily in the southeastern United States. As of October 29, 2000, the Company, itself or through certain wholly owned subsidiaries collectively, operated and franchised a chain of 1,023 Shoney's Restaurants and Captain D's in 28 states. Shoney's Restaurants are family dining restaurants offering full table service and a broad menu, and Captain D's are quick-service restaurants specializing in seafood. The Company also owns Commissary Operations, Inc., a distribution and manufacturing operation that includes three distribution centers that provide Company and certain franchised restaurant operations with necessary food and supplies. The distribution and manufacturing operation also includes a food processing facility for ground beef, steaks, and soup products. For the 28 weeks ended 5/13/01, revenues fell 6% to $363.7 million. Net loss from continuing operations totalled $7.7 million, up from $1.8 million. Revenues reflect a decline in the number of restaurants in operations and lower comparable store sales. Higher loss also reflects higher labor costs as a percentage of sales.
