Business Summary
Ruddick Corporation is a holding company which, through its wholly owned subsidiaries, is engaged in two primary businesses, Harris Teeter, Inc. and American & Efird, Inc. (A&E). Harris Teeter operates a regional chain of supermarkets in six southeastern states. These supermarkets sells groceries, produce, meat and seafood, delicatessen items, bakery items, wines and non-food items such as health and beauty care, floral and other products. As of October 2000, Harris Teeter had 156 stores in operation. A&E is a manufacturer and distributor of sewing thread produced from natural and synthetic fibers, for worldwide industrial and consumer markets.

Financial Summary
RDK is a holding company, through its subsidiaries, operates a regional chain of supermarkets, and manufactures and distributes industrial and consumer sewing thread and yarn. For the nine months ended 7/1/01, net sales rose 5% to $2.11 billion. Net loss totaled $12.9 million vs. an income of $39 million. Revenues reflect increased comparable store sales at Harris Teeter. Net loss reflects lower margins at the American and Efird segment, and a $47.1 million charge related to store sales.
