Business Summary
Safeway Inc. is a food and drug retailers with 1,688 stores. Safeway's United States retail operations are located principally in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, the Chicago metropolitan area and the Mid-Atlantic region. The Company's Canadian retail operations are located principally in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba/Saskatchewan. In support of its retail operations, the Company has an extensive network of distribution, manufacturing and food processing facilities. In addition, Safeway owns interest in Casa Ley, S.A. de C.V., which operates 97 food and general merchandise stores in western Mexico.

Financial Summary
Safeway Inc. is engaged in the opertion of retail supermarkets, with over 1,680 stores (as of 12/00) located throughout North America. For the 24 weeks ended 6/16/01, sales rose 8% to $15.65 billion. Net income rose 13% to $591.2 million. Revenues reflect the opening of new stores and the acquisition of Genuardi. Earnings also benefitted from the continuing improvements in buying practices, shrink control, private-label growth and spending adjustments.
