Measured by the number of retail locations, Samuels is the seventh largest specialty retailer of fine jewelry in the country.

Financial Summary
SMJW operates, as of 11/00, 200 retail jewelry stores, located primarily in regional malls, which offer fine jewelry items with a principal emphasis on diamond and gemstone jewelry. For the nine months ended 3/3/01, revenues fell 2% to $121.3 million. Net loss totaled $15.2 million vs. an income of $828 thousand. Revenues reflect soft holiday sales and the absense of financing fee income. Net loss reflects lower margins on merchandise sale due to competitive discounting.
