One of my acquaintances, Gabe Helou in Farmington, MI, plays in the Farmington Community Band. Gabe specializes in all manner of percussion devices. The band's repetoir is all over the place, and the music is always excellent. Highly recommended, especially if you are in the greater Detroit area! Better yet, admission is free, though donations are welcome. The most memorable concert I was at, I missed the 1st half and needed to listen to it in the lobby. Wonderfully executed marches.
Gustav Ryberg, one of my fellow CFIs, is also a percussionist. Gustav is the drummer for a local Madison, WI area band, The New Mountain Kickers. They describe their style of music as New Grass. During their shows The NMKs play their own music, which is darn good, as well as covers of other bands. Something particularily interesting is their mix of instruments, which gives them a great sounds ... Drums, Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Ukelele, and ... Banjo! and ... Saxophone! One of the band members has his own recording studio. You can find more information about the band at Big Kitty Recording.
From my understanding, Kat has become quite a vocalist ... and perhaps a lot more. She is singing and banding out in on the west coast and doing quite well from what I hear. I haven't been to any of her shows, but James tell me she is doing quite well!
MJO is a home-grown keyboard artist. I don't think he has had any formal training, but he plays the keyboard like some wonder from down under. A while ago he finally purchased his own keyboard synth, but I suspect that he doesn't have much time to play,
Chadnibal plays keyboard on occasion, but mostly he sings in a church choir from time to time. His singing voice is quite nice, and ballads and old fashioned songs of camaraderie are well done and enjoyable.
Dan Glasser is a good hand at a guitar and decent vocalist to boot. One time I rememember him playing his Martin Backpacker at a con until his fingers were bleeding from it. Dan's specialty is filk, and he has run the filk program at a few cons.
Last but not least in any fashion is my wonderful friend Rennie, Karen Wasiewlewski. BTW, Rennie is a superlative, not a dimunitive if you were wondering. Rennie/Karen is quite an accomplished piano player and a Celloist to boot! She also sings with a wonderful voice! I think Karen has taken some time off from music to concentrate on a few other things, such as skating. Rennie is quite musical and adept at it, and sings and plays wonderfully.
