Lousy Late-Night Snacks

I know that snacking late at night is a bad thing, but sometimes (always) you're up late studying or doing homework (or playing Nintendo) and you need something to tide you over. This week and this week only, a bunch of snacks that I've tried, (usually because I don't have much food left and needed to go to the grocery store) and don't recommend.

Date Snack
Sunday March 21, 1999 A can of water chestnuts I didn't have many things left to munch. I opened a can of water chestnuts and put some soy sauce on them. Mmmmmm. The soy sauce at least gives them some flavor. Low in calories too!
Monday March 22, 1999 A cup of dry Rasin Bran A cup of Rasin Bran actually makes a somewhat tasty snack. The trouble is that it's high in calories for something to be eating before bed, and when you get up in the morning you don't have any rasin bran left for breakfast. That goes for most breakfast cereals; if you eat them now, you can't eat them tomorrow morning, plus your body will tend to store up all those carbohydrate calories as fat.
Tuesday March 23, 1999 (Brown) Sugar If you're trying to study late at night and having trouble concentrating, a spoonful of sugar or seven or eight will probably make it harder.
Wednesday March 24, 1999 A can of chick peas Don't get me wrong. I love chick peas, but straight out of a can late at night they are not nearly as good as with real food. Sometimes I dump them in a bowl and put hot sauce or something like that on them. Hot sauce, unfortunately, isn't the best late night snack seasoning, so it really doesn't help much. Chick peas are relatively healthy, though, and are quite filling.
Thursday March 25, 1999 A pound of newtons Of course newtons are a great snack, but when you're up late trying to finish that program, it's not unusual to pollish off a whole package before you're done. It's definitely a good idea to keep your newtons out of easy reach when you're studying or programming lest you consume all 1650 Calories in one sitting. This is also true of graham crackers and chopped dates.
Friday March 26, 1999 Green Giant Meatless Frozen Protien Crumbles

This one is particularly bad. Protien Crumbles are intended to be used in recipes as a low-fat/meatless substitute for hamburger, and when used correctly they are pretty good. I just got the bag out of the freezer and ate a few handfulls. I didn't have much food around at the time. I actually finished off the bag at breakfast the next morning. Ugh. I suppose it could have been worse if I had eaten plain frozen ground beef.
