Last weekend was the big moving in/out weekend, and as anyone in Madison knows, the curbs become littered with mounds of stuff people don't want anymore. Of course sometimes people throw out perfectly good stuff, so it's often worthwhile to slow down as you pass such a trash heap. This week and this week only, read about stuff my roommates and I pulled off of various curbs around campus.

Sunday August 22, 1999 | Dartboard | I think it was Kevin and I who found a soft-tip dartboard on Mills Street. It was in perfectly good shape, with a little bag of extra tips still taped to it. This ws really an ideal find, since our recently graduated ex-roommate, Ryan, took his dartboard with him to North Carolina. It's too bad about the walls in our new place, though. |
Monday August 23, 1999 | Box Fan | I think it was also Kevin and I who found a small box-fan. It was
in the same trash pile as the dart board. I think there were actually
two boxfans. We grabbed
the smaller one. It was all dusty, but it works fine. We were really concerned that the stuff we were picking through wasn't really trash, since there was so much good stuff there. The pile of junk was still there the next few days, though, so it was actually ok. I saw several other people looking at that stuff on the 14th. |
Tuesday August 24, 1999 | Sandals | Ok, I know what you're thinking, but it's not as bad as it sounds.
I certainly don't just pick up footwear off the street all the time.
You see, I was walking by the house of someone I know, and he had just
thrown out a pair of sandals. They weren't worn out, they were just kind of
goofy-looking, and they appeared to be about my size so I took them. Now I've tried them on and they do fit. They're Frankenstein sandals, though - they're rather thick and heavy. They each weigh about two pounds and I stand at least an inch taller when wearing them. The soles don't like to bend either. So aside from the fact that I look and walk like a duck when I'm wearing them, and the fact that I don't really like sandals anyway, I think I'll keep them around. I bet they'll be handy for crushing aluminum cans three at a time (scrunch scrunch), or maybe breaking ice on the sidewalk during the winter, or perhaps if I decide to try my hand at the reanimation of dead heads. |
Wednesday August 25, 1999 | Plastic crates | It was actually Hari who grabbed these, but I was rummaging also. They are the type of plastic crates that you can use as shelves or ... crates. I think we found them on Mills Street also. |
Thursday August 26, 1999 | Cordless phone/answering machine | This was a kind of funny thing to find. Hari and I saw a wooden
bike tree across the street from our new place, and when I went to check
it out I found this phone lying there also. I picked them both up and ran
real fast (just kidding, the guy throwing it out confirmed that he was
actually getting rid of it). The phone turned out to actually be a bit of a mess. It was all mildewy and dirty, and the battery had been disconnected. I took it apart, cleaned it up, charged the battery, and it didn't work. After it dried and was mostly back together it did work, however, which was pretty cool. The answering machine woks too. So even though it's not a great answering machine it does the job. Its so great to part of the technological elite. |
