Foreword

We are pleased to present this excellent collection of papers that are to be presented in the First Workshop on Internet Server Performance, held in conjunction with ACM SIGMETRICS’98. This collection of papers covers a broad range of topics that have significant impact in the future design and development of Internet servers and solutions. The papers are organized into five categories: Applications, Servers, Quality-of-Service, Caching and Distributed servers. Dr. Jeoffrey Fox will present the keynote address that promises to shed light on web servers and multi-tiered database applications.

In response to our call-for-papers, we received 23 submissions of which 13 were selected for presentation as full papers while 3 were selected as research updates. Each paper was assigned 4 PC members and at least 3 reviews were compiled for each one. We were particularly pleased with the wide variety of topics that these papers covered.

We are grateful to the other program committee members for actively participating in the reviewing process, and in compiling this program. We are also thankful to the authors of all the submitted papers; especially those whose work is showcased in this proceedings.

We hope that in coming years, this workshop matures and grows to be an important gathering of researchers and practitioners in the field of internet server performance.
