Remembering Dr. Arthur Hawnn
Dr. Arthur Hawnn entered eternal rest on September 12, 2012. Arthur was born in Korea and was an interpreter for the U.S. during the Korean War. Arthur met a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire professor during the war, who offered to help him get into the University of Wisconsin if he was able to get to the U.S. To nobody’s surprise, Arthur did what was needed to get to the U.S., become a citizen, and enter the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Arthur worked manual labor jobs throughout his time at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to cover his room, board, and tuition. He earned a BS, MS and Ph.D degree in Civil Engineering in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and went onto a very successful career in consulting and with the Department of Defense.
Arthur was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the College of Engineering in 2005. Additional information about Authur’s life can be found here.
Through Arthur’s generosity and love for the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Arthur will be remembered through the Arthur F. Hawnn Professorship in Transportation and the Peterson/Rader/Hawnn Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Rest in peace Arthur.
