It was accidental that I met Lucy Friedland. And I am very glad I did. In summer 1999, my friend Gavin and I bumped into her at the Friendship Store in Beijing. She was asking in vain for directions, actually she was asking for bus schedule as I recall. She was trying to communicate with the shop clerk in a mix of English and Chinese and since I kind of know both language, I started talking to her and also tried my best to present her the bad news that there is no such a thing as bus schedule in Beijing, or China in general.
